If you are on Windows, all you have to do is run the run-nightly-webkit.cmd file once you copy all the files and folders to your Safari directory. It then installs the updated files and runs the browser (and a terminal window, which you can safely close once the browser opens)

Well, I've got 7 tabs open right now in Safari, and it is using approx. 50 megs of memory.

Sweet I will download now then give it a whirl!

Different forms of rendering, one snaps to the pixel grid, one keeps the form of the characters.

It's a personal choice, people used to the pixel snapping form will find the form keeping kind odd, etc.

Edit: And if it's really important to you, Safari can use the pixel snapping form if you set the font smoothing type to 4 (the UI only presents 3 options, so you'll need to change a config file)

Exactly, good someone got it right here. :)

There are advantages and disadvantages with both rendering methods. OS X will adhere to the typeface design better while on the other hand getting more blurred text, while ClearType will get sharper text thanks to aligning it to the physical pixels on screen, while on the other hand deviating more from the typeface.

As a matter of interest I have 22 Twenty Two Tabs open in Maxthon and it's using 51MB: 50MB for 7 or so tabs is high! The person who said one tab is using 80 odd MB ram, there must be something else wrong! It should not be using so much.

Nice browser. Quite like it a lot actually. Just need some tips:

- How do I add a "new tab" icon onto the toolbar?

- Is there a way for Safari to use the default Windows Vista font renderer?

Otherwise it's fast and stable so far.

@ Lasker That Avatar you have, freaks me out. LOL

Does the latest webkit nightly install at all for me.. Meaning that when I click (or ran as an admin) the run-nightly-webkit.cmd cmd window just flashes and browser doesn't start after that..

Using Vista 64-bit.. Or has anyone else tried it with that os..

Anyway the 3.1 version seems nice.. :)

What I did was to download the webkit nightly then go to the safari folder and replace all dll's with the new webkit, works like a charm! (Y)

    • Anyway to download these versions without being on the Experimental builds?
    • Nothing is stopping you from continuing with your testing cadence. If updates are released every 2 weeks instead of 4, and you test once every 4 weeks, the exact same amount of patches will still be available for you in those 4 weeks. For example: Before 4th week - patch 1, 2, 3, 4 After 2nd week - patch 1 and 2 4th week - patch 3 and 4 Still the same amount after 4.
    • Everyone else has said it. I'm gonna say it - you don't know what you're talking about. I do. I have two laptops. One work, one personal. I have access to two more laptops - both personal. At home I manually update my personal laptop when I see on Neowin that there is an update - I carry on and only apply the updates when I am ready. My work one only updates when my workplace decides to send it - I carry on and only apply the updates (when they actually arrive, which is usually days after the release) when I switch off the laptop at the end of the day as usual. The two other personal laptops only get updated when I get to it which is rarely - the people who own them carry on using them until I get to it and update them. All of the browsers on all laptops are configured to restore the tabs when launched. Google and Microsoft have changed from 6 weeks to 4, and it looks like it's going to move to 2. None of these changes affect how any of these browsers on the laptops are used. Not one jot. My advice to you is stop panicking whenever you see an update. Just carry on with what you're doing. This even benefits you in a way - from your comment you sound like you don't like the changes or the frivolous new features - great - then carry on as before!
