Sigma Tel Driver Blocking Vista SP1 Update

Recommended Posts

Any PC expert,

Here is the situation. I upgraded my Gateway PC sound system with a Yamaha receiver and JBL speakers. I wanted and successfully ran a digital optical line from my PC to my Yamaha receiver from my PC?s optical jack. However, I did NOT get any sound. The PC?s motherboard did not recognize the optical jack. After calling Gateway support, I finally got an update for my PC which was:

SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC (for 64 bit windows)

Driver Provider: Sigma Tel

Driver Date: 02/28/2007

Driver Version: 6.10.5405.0

Great! I have sound utilizing a ?Digital Output Device (S/PDIF)?. HOWEVER, I believe this particular driver has an ?issue? with the Vista SP1 update and therefore when I check for ?windows updates? there is NONE showing. How do I get this driver updated and enable me to download the Vista SP1 update? Yes, I know I can download the Vista SP1 update manually but, the catch will be NO SOUND.

How can I find or how can I be alerted to an update for this particular driver? Who am I waiting on? MS? Gateway? SigmaTel?

Thanks for your help.

I did send some emails to IDT which has ?acquired? SigmaTel. News is not good. Bottom line and let me quote ?IDT currently does not provide end-user support or drivers for PC Audio products?. Isn?t that sweet? Read for yourself:

Ok. MS waiting for a driver update that ONLY you can provide. I?ll post when and if I get it???.best of luck to all.

I have done a ?search automatically? for updated driver software. ?Windows will search your computer and the Internet for the latest driver software for your device??..And the result?

?Windows has determined the driver software for your device is up to date???..?SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC??..

Vista SP1 update will have to wait??????.

Glad I didnt install the service pack yet.

There is a microsoft website that lists problems with some other drivers and this current one was on there

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=948343

Windows Vista Service Pack 1 is not available for installation from Windows Update and is not offered by Automatic Updates

To help ensure a positive update experience, Windows Update will temporarily not offer Windows Vista SP1 to systems that have the following device drivers. In some cases, these device drivers are problematic on Windows Vista-based computers when you update to Windows Vista SP1. By installing updated device drivers, you will resolve the issue and enable Windows Update to offer Windows Vista SP1.

Audio drivers

SigmaTel

• For x86-based computers: Stwrt.sys - version 6.10.5511.0 or earlier

• For x64-based computers: Stwrt64.sys - version 6.10.5511.0 or earlier

that sucks major ass, cause you cant find any new drivers then those!

Dont know if that helps you guys or not. There is a an updated driver for them on Gateways site....Dont know if it will work or not, but the version number is IDT/SigmaTel Audio Driver version: 6.10.5713.0

Work with Vista 64bit?

After looking into their site more they dont have any new ones for 64bit.

thats newer then the Microsoft Support website says. They say it wont install with anything 6.10.5511.0 or earlier, this one is newer. try that download, for the driver. Someone on the Dell Fourm has had the same problem and they pointed him to that and he says it worked. Actually a few people are saying that. They are signed by IDT though, but a few a reporting that it is a working driver for sp1.

Ahhhh.....I don't know...I tried this one earlier, it would not take and I ended up losing ALL sound:

Dell download for my Gateway?.........Oh G__.....Not sure what to do ......

Yeah I dont know what to tell you either, I've looked and it looks like thats all there is really. Be nice if they would just make one update for all and be done.

To be continued???.MS is saying that my sound card has nothing to do with not getting the Vista SP1 update and I only need to wait a couple more weeks and I will receive the Vista SP1 update through Windows Automatic Updates.

They offered to walk me through a ?manual? Vista SP1 update and I refused. I needed to remove my Trend Micro AV. I answered: ?No?. I?m tired of playing MIS tech. I?ll wait for the automatic update.

Since I had them on the phone line I reminded them that the only way I can get Trend Micro AV to scan my PC is to turn ?OFF? the UAC. He could not believe that. Believe it.

See you in a couple of weeks??????

Hi Lexonex ,

This is Jenny with Microsoft Windows Technical Support.

It was my pleasure to work with you on your Windows service request 1062199481. I hope that you were happy with the service provided to you.

Based on our last conversation it appears that this service request is resolved and ready to be archived. If this is not correct or if you are not happy with the support we?ve provided please let us know as soon as possible. My goal is to ensure that your experience with Microsoft Windows Technical Support leaves you pleased with our products and services.

Here is a summary of the key points of the service request for your records:

ACTION :tried to install sp1

RESULT :unable to get sp1 through windows updates

CAUSE :sp1 is not yet offered to the computer

RESOLUTION : we found you will be getting the sp1 through windows updates or you can install sp1 manually through microsoft website

If you have any feedback regarding Microsoft support, we would be glad to hear from you. If you would feel more comfortable speaking with someone else regarding my service, shankar, my manager, would be very happy to hear your comments and suggestions.

Like I say........to be continued.......we will see in two weeks...........

I had a similar problem as you, onboard SigmaTel sound (Dell), SP1 was blocked on Windows Update. I downloaded SP1 and installed it manually, everything is working fine and I still have sound which is great :) so that might be worth a try? However, since you seem not inclined to manually install it, SP1 should also be pushed as a required update on Automatic Updates sometime next month, so you can always wait till then as well.

I'll probably still check now and again at Dell support to see if they do in fact release updated drivers, but so far no issues to report (unfortunately the same can't be said about my older PC with an Audigy 4 soundcard, but that is off topic :p).

I'm less inclined to think SigmaTel is the reason for my SP1 failures. I've totally deleted it off my system and still failed, as well as installing a driver newer than that listed by MS as the problem and it still fails. Seems like MS is passing the blame a bit...

Hello Lexonex,

Our OEM partners have requested that all technical support for their models be handled by the OEM directly. OEM is the Original Equipment Manufacturer and is referring to the Brand Name on your Personal Computer.

Regarding Vista SP1 update:

Microsoft appears to be applying a filter to prohibit a Windows Update installation of SP1 to all audio vendors who load additional applications or use a co-installer with their driver.

Microsoft has made improvements to the core operating system and the audio sub-system architecture, the update replaces their supporting audio files and requires a re-installation of the audio CODEC. The drivers that shipped with your system are compatible with SP1, but will block an automatic Windows Update and will need to be un-installed to allow Windows to upgrade. After the Vista SP1 installation is complete, the audio drivers can be safely re-installed.

To do this:

1. Make sure that there is an IDT audio driver available on your system to re-install.

Many OEMs ship with the drivers on the hard drive; ensure you have a driver available.

If you don't:

Contact the OEM (PC Mfg) and download the available IDT Audio driver for Vista. (The version can be the same as what you already have installed.)

Our OEM partners control the distribution of their drivers and IDT does not provide driver download support.

Make sure you know where the driver is at and can locate it for installation later.

If you cannot obtain a copy of the audio driver for your system, contact your OEM for further support.

2. Un-install the current audio driver

In Control Panel select Classic View

Double click Programs and Features

Uninstall the Audio driver - SigmaTel or IDT Audio

Select the audio device and click on Uninstall

3. Allow Windows to update your system to Vista SP1, or download SP1 and manually install.

4. Once installation is complete - run the audio installation to restore your audio subsystem.

IDT?s OEM partners provide us with detailed feature-set and behavioral specifications for every model. If a feature is not available, this is likely because they chose not to enable it in either software or hardware. SigmaTel/IDT must comply with our Customer?s specifications for their systems.

We are not allowed to distribute OEM drivers to end-users, nor can we make modifications to the drivers outside of these manufacturer?s specifications.

IDT continually updates our OEM customers with new drivers that include bug fixes and new feature requests.

Please check for updates from your PC manufacturer.

Regards,

Xxxx

Try the IDT 6.10.5713.0 audio drivers from the Gateway support site, Lexonex. Since they can support a lot of hardware than the 6.10.5609 and 6.10.5614 drivers from the Dell site, they just might work. They're actually for BOTH Vista 32bit and Vista 64bit editions. I've installed the 6.10.5713.0 drivers on the Dell Inspiron E1405 notebook computer I'm currently using and they worked.

my GFs Dell has those too and wouldn't install SP1, it just failed over and over. So i just used my SP1 integrated disc and formatted her machine and installed and it's been going fine since then. :)

That same SigmaTel thing was on there, my Thinkpad had the UPTEK fingerprint part i guess, took care of that too.

Here's the Hardware ID no. my mother's Dell Inspiron E1405 laptop computer uses for the Sigmatel/IDT High Definition Audio Codec driver:

HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_8384&DEV_7690&SUBSYS_102801D8

You can get the hardware id info from Device manager by expanding the "Sound, video and game controllers" section of Vista's Device Manager, double click on Sigmatel High Definition Audio Codec [or IDT High Definition Audio Codec] to view its properties, click on the Details tab, then click on the Property list box and change it from "Device Description" to "Hardware IDs"

I recommend anyone having problems installing the newer Sigmatel/IDT HD Audio codec drivers should post here what Hardware ID no. their Sigmatel/IDT hardware uses. I might be able to help them find a working driver for Vista SP1.

Many Sigmatel HD devices that have a hardware ID number starting with "FUNC_01&VEN_8384" should be able to work with the v6.10.5609, build 5614 and 5713 of the Sigmatel drivers. If the hardware ID no. starts off like "FUNC_01&VEN_111D", then build 5713 of the drivers should work with this as build 5609 and 5614 of the drivers won't work with devices that use the hardware ID beginning with "111D"

I've just finished downloading & installing the full Vista SP1 standalone pack and the Dell Inspiron E1405 laptop seem to work fine. No problems with Vista SP1 here.

The Intel drivers for my IDT sound aren't numbered the way they are in the article.

Date: 2/25/08

stwrt.sys = 1.0.5713.6

stwrt64.sys = 1.0.5713.6

Using these drivers with this specific version will disqualify you from getting Vista SP1 thru Windows Update. WU will no longer offer Vista SP1 when using 1.0.5713.6 of the IDT sound drivers. In order for WU to offer Vista SP1, the stwrt.sys & stwrt64.sys drivers have to be greater than v6.10.5511. If you really require the 1.0.5713.6 of the IDT sound drivers on your system, GreyWolfSC, consider installing the full Vista SP1 pack from here:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;displaylang=en

And of course, you can order the Vista SP1 CD/DVD from Microsoft.

I just use the ones bundled with the OS install and everything was fine. Those are the latest drivers available for the Intel integrated audio, which was SigmaTel, but is now IDT. I think maybe the info on the KB article is a bit out of date since it mentions SigmaTel.

July 25, 2006--SigmaTel, Inc. (NASDAQ:SGTL) announced today that it signed a definitive agreement with Integrated Device Technology (IDT) (NASDAQ:IDTI) to sell its PC Audio product line to IDT.

Seems like from July 2006 to now should have been enough time for Microsoft to get that memo... ;)

    • Apple reluctantly forces strict new age checks on Texas users starting today by Paul Hill Apple will begin enforcing the Texas Age Assurance Law (SB 2420) following a recent court ruling that lifted an injunction on SB 2420. Starting June 4 (today), Apple will enforce strict age-verification and parental-consent rules for new Apple accounts created in Texas. This move will affect children under 18 who go to download apps or attempt to make in-app purchases. Apple previously expressed privacy concerns related to this law, but compliance is now mandatory for the company, nevertheless. Apple will use several APIs to follow the law. Principally, the Declared Age Range API will fetch the specific user age bracket (Under 13, 13-15, 16-17, or 18+) and a verification method. The Significant Change API (PermissionKit) will trigger a system dialog for parental consent if an app gets a major update or an age-rating shift. There is also a new property type in StoreKit that allows developers to automatically check when their app’s age rating has changed on a user’s device and then use the Significant Change API to request parental consent. Finally, App Store Server Notifications can be configured to tell developers when a parent revokes consent, blocking app launches. To ensure they are ready for these changes, developers must immediately use Apple’s sandbox testing environment to validate these APIs in their apps. For any developers out there finding this to be inconvenient, get used to it. Other regions, such as Utah, Louisiana, and Brazil, are looking at, or have implemented, similar rules.
