The Magic behind MagicJack free phone calls

Recommended Posts

 Bring a laptop with a wireless card, plug in a normal home phone into magic jack, sit at a table and talk on it :D People would probably get a laugh <.<

I will do that with a phone like this:

Telefon04_2.jpg

So after you purchase it and set it up, will it assign you a phone number or what? Can you choose your own number?

Do I have to keep a program running on my computer in order for it to work? Does the adapter work like a U3 device?

Just tried Florida ... sound was perfect.

Called Tennessee -- I heard every other syllable -- kept cutting out.

I can see me asking for a refund

Edit -- Ran the magicFix thingy ---rebooted MJ. Fixed the sound perfect.

I have yet to buy this product, but after doing some quick research I do not like how there terms of service is setup its almost considered to be false advertising since you have to pay to call overseas (the international rates are buried in there FAQ). No where on the site does it mention ad-ware/spware free, so there using you to advertise there product, plus they scan your numbers to advertise even more. There website magicjack.com uses the word free 17 times on the free page, to me thats just a marketing tactic / ploy to get you in, guess its working for some people. This would however be great for international use to call us numbers. Id be interested if they come out with a mobile device similar to skypes only then will i consider buying it.

^ The only claim they make on International calls, are:

You can call Canada from the USA, free.

Anyone with a MagicJack can call you free, no matter what country, as long as you have HSI.

They offer to sell you other International calling, for a little more money.

Certainly sounds much less that my phone company would charge.

So after you purchase it and set it up, will it assign you a phone number or what? Can you choose your own number?

Answer: You pick a area code close to you, tho it may not be the actual area code your home phone has, or the area you live in.

The area code may be in some other part of your state.

You also get a choice of a prefix; the last 4 digits are assigned to you.

Do I have to keep a program running on my computer in order for it to work ?

To make and receive calls, your computer must be running and connected to the Internet @ high-speed.

Does the adapter work like a U3 device ?

Not sure what you mean. MJ plugs directly into your USB port.

You can either talk thru a mic/speaker, or plug in any normal phone to the MagicJack.

Thanks for the reply :)

It's hard to explain what U3 is. It's basically a program on a flash drive that adds an emulated optical drive on your computer when inserted, and runs some annoying program every time. It's very difficult to remove. Wikipedia gives a much better description.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U3

I ordered this device last Thursday and I got it on the mail today and I have been using it and testing it and it really sounds great. Come guys, this is better than paying expensive phone bills. They don't install anyting on your PC, except for a folder on the Application Data folder that has the program. Unplug the device and the program closes. This service is not perfect but its not bad either. Skype sounds worst than this and people still use it and pay for their services.

Got it in today, the adapter does indeed act like that of a U3 device. They don't have our area code, which is a HUGE minus. There's no telling when they'll add our area code, could be sometime next year. So we really have no choice to keep our landline phone until this happens.

Not only that, but you can't have DSL without a landline phone either so we'll have to be forced to switch ISP's too... Kinda starting to become a hassle.

They had a list of area codes to look at on their website in the FAQ section and well the DSL landline problem... well thats is DSL in a nutshell.

For other people who want to see if their area codes are available: http://www.magicjack.com/1/areacodes.asp

It's a free 30-day trial -- just send it back. ;)

I got my MagicJack so I could make very cheap long distance calls, when I need to.

Not as a local phone service replacement.

I ran into this forum while googeling Magic Jack, I dont want to appear to be a spammer because I do resell this product. However, I believed in the product after I tried it myself and saw that it is a working replacement for a second line. Only then did we decide to sell this product.

I do not use this as a primary line because at this time you cannot transfer your existing number to the MagicJack, however in a few short months you will be able to.

I happen to notice the discussion of those who are unsure of the product and have never tried it. I would suggest you do try it if you would like to reduce your cell phone minutes while at home, if you travel often and have to rely on hotel phones, if you have family overseas that would like to talk to you more often without spending hundreds of dollars to reach you and talk freely.

If you do send the device to them it is free to call you here in the US or Canada and free to you when calling another magicJack customer no matter where they are on the planet as long as they have a broadband connection. If you call someone overseas and they do not have the MagicJack then the charges are similar to what skype users would pay for international calls to a landline.

For $39.99 which includes your first yr of service there really is nothing to lose ... you will save that much very quickly and much more if you use it frequently and the price of the product is refundable if you return it within 30 days.

The link to the product on our site is :

or the moderator of this site can delete it if he or she deems this message inappropriate. either way I would be happy to help anyone who has questions about the product. We are by no means experts in tech support for the product so if you have simple questions we may be able to help.

However much you try to make it look like you're not spamming..you clearly just joined these forums to advertise this software.

    • I just looked on my computer and there are settings and log files for utilities I have never even turned on!
    • O&O ShutUp10 3.1.1104 by Razvan Serea O&O ShutUp10 offers a simple yet effective way to take control of your Windows privacy. It provides access to almost 50 privacy-related tweaks, most of them hidden or not easily accessible to the average computer users. Using a very simple interface, you decide how Windows 10/11 should respect your privacy by deciding which unwanted functions should be deactivated. Using ShutUp10 you can easily disable Windows Defender, turn off telemetry, disable peer-to-peer updates, turn off Wi-Fi Sense, disable automatic Windows updates, turn off and reset Cortana and more. ShutUp10 allows you to create a System Restore point before you apply any changes, so that you can revert your system at any time if you run into problems. O&O ShutUp10 is entirely free and does not have to be installed – it can be simply run directly and immediately on your PC. And it will not install or download retrospectively unwanted or unnecessary software, like so many other programs do these days! O&O ShutUp10 Free and Premium The latest version brings O&O ShutUp10 Premium, expanding the app’s long-standing privacy controls with automatic enforcement of user-defined settings. Instead of manually rechecking options after every Windows update, users can set their preferred privacy configuration once—or apply recommended settings in a single click—and the tool continuously monitors them in the background. If Windows 10 or 11 re-enables disabled features or introduces new data collection paths, Premium restores the chosen settings automatically without user intervention. The free version remains available and fully functional for manual adjustments, offering the same core privacy controls for Windows. However, the Premium tier is aimed at users who want long-term, hands-off protection, adding automatic reapplication after updates, ongoing monitoring, and optional notifications to ensure privacy settings remain consistent over time. • Fascinating...W h i t e P o w e r is now also asterisks out.
    • In the past few days I have noticed two odd moderation activities. First, when I posted the term 'White Nationist Christian' it was asterisk's out. When I changed it to **** it was allowed! Second, in the Politics is a ###business thread I was allowed to post that the GOP is a party of p e d ophiles but I was censored  when I posted the GOP are a party of p e d ophile protectors. Wtf Neowin. Please explain.
