Apple to offer latest release movies on iTunes

Apple is expected to announce Thursday that it has struck a deal with a wide array of major and mini studios to offer many new releases for purchase at its iTunes Store.

The move would allow a broad slate of top-shelf films to be offered day-and-date with home video releases, which risks cannibalizing DVD sales.

The new arrangement with the studios is expected to involve Fox, Walt Disney Studios, Warner Bros., Paramount, Universal, Sony Pictures, Lionsgate and New Line. The deal does not include new titles from MGM but does extend to boutique firms such as Magnolia and Image Entertainment.

$14.99 for a digital copy? thanks but no thanks. I know it's movie studios who set the price but still that is ridiculous.

+1

and no germany still anyways, so why should i care xD

"cannibalize dvd sales" -> the only reason I buy dvds (when i do.. lol) is that it's more than the single movie... its got extras, a booklet sometimes, a cover and its PHYSICAL...

holy crap... the best dvds are just slightly more expensive than that after release... xD

$5 would be interesting, but that tag is ridiculous.

If that's the case, why is it that the same music from iTunes costs far less on eMusic and without DRM?

music and movies are 2 very different animals. movie studios are nowhere near budging on DRM. Do not expect to see non drmed first run studio content available for download any time in the near future. What you will see is less restrictive drm in the very near future. We are working hard over here to make sure you can do with your content all of the things that you would want to do with your content, with the exception of making illegal copies.

If you are comparing illegal torrents to legal download from providers like cinemanow or itunes. There is more to using a legal service than just the "legality" of it. If you have a job and can afford to pay 1.99 or 2.99 for a rental or fork out the 14.99 for the download, the convenience of using a service is far better. Downloading a torrent you are at the will of other peoples willingness to share their bandwidth with you, most files are compressed and are in formats that take hours for you to actually get them onto a dvd and watch them. Over here we have massive content delivery servers that allow you to start watching movies within 30 seconds. Using devices like the archos 605 and the mp media smart tv (more on the way) you can buy the content directly from the devices without even touching your computer. In my (partially non-biased) opinion torrents are way to much work and spyware to keep me from spending a few bucks to buy the content legally.

I said nothing about torrents. I can assure you that eMusic is not illegal. It is even on the default list of Windows Media Player stores. Go their site and look if you like. If you download 50 tracks from iTunes for .99 a track, or you can download the same 50 tracks from another store for $15 a month, that makes iTunes more expensive the way I see it. ;)

First off I would never BUY a movie in download format. The quality is probably much lower than even a DVD.

If they are asking $14.99 for them screw it. I can get non "collectors" of most first release movies for only $2-$4 more. If they were say $8.99 then I might sway away from the sentence above.

The thing it really boils down to is unless I buy enough downloaded movies to offset the price of Apple TV there is no point.

$14.99 movies but $229 Apple TV to play them easily that probably are not 720p vs $15-$17 DVD's on my $99 DVD player]

Tho I will state I have zero issues with renting downloaded movies.

I kinda doubt I would get any of these movies... no hard copy & DRM = no purchase. If I have a hard copy and it has DRM, well at least I can do what I want with the copy and sell it if I don't like it anymore or if I want it in a different format (even though modern formats allow for mandatory managed copies), or if it's a file and it has no DRM, at least I can play it on the device I want and I know it won't get shut down on me. Apple is doing good things with their music store but I kind of doubt they can make this fly like that.

GTAIV being on torrents made the news.

I think your missing the point there... that was an illegal release compared to a legal one which is why this story made the news they are saying you can now legally... thats a big difference from game leaked before released

No thanks. For that price I'll just stick with my torrents. If it was $5 I might have been willing to pay that. When are these studios going to learn? When you offer a digital download, it has to be significantly cheaper than at retail.

lmao, i am very familiar with emusic, thanks. like i said music and movies are 2 very different animals. they are different studios, even when they are the same studios the division are very separated. Also the investment is very very different, the cost of making a movie is much higher than recording a record. Like I said they are 2 totally different animals, you are comparing apples and oranges.

stay tuned ! we are working out these challenges.

    • I like Tidal, but it still does not control devices from the mobile/app and still no surround support. And yeah re: above comment I still get a lot of network errors and I am on a 4/4 Gbit Fiber connection.
    • Aren`t "security features" and "AI model that can see your screen" a tad diametric!
    • Samsung, Amazon extend 990 PRO 2TB NVMe SSD deal beyond Prime Day 2026 by Sayan Sen Recently, we had Amazon's Prime Day 2026 sales wherein there were several great deals including on SSDs. One of those discounted components was the Samsung 990 PRO SSD as the 2TB variant of it was selling for $370, a very good price after a long time. Although that deal was supposed to expire today, Amazon has now extended that sale further (purchase link under the specs table down below). The 990 PRO is a PCIe Gen4 NVMe SSD and still one of the fastest drives available today for under $400. Speaking of fast, sequential reads and writes are rated at 7450 MB/s and 6900 MB/s, respectively. The random throughputs for reads and writes are 1400K IOPS and 1550K IOPS, respectively. The 990 PRO is based on Samsung's 7th Gen V-NAND flash, and it too is TLC. It packs 2 gigs of LPDDR4 DRAM cache, which helps the random performance. The endurance rating for this is 1200 TBW (terabytes written), which should be sufficient for most users. The Samsung 990 PRO is compatible with the PlayStation 5, but if you are going to use the 990 PRO on a PC, check out the Samsung Magician app that lets you track your drive's health, update its firmware, customize various settings, and more. The technical specs of the Samsung 990 PRO 2TB are given in the table below: Specification Value Form Factor M.2 2280 Interface PCIe Gen 4.0 x4, NVMe 2.0 NAND Flash Samsung V-NAND TLC Controller Samsung In-house Controller Cache Memory Samsung 2GB Low Power DDR4 SDRAM Sequential Read Speed Up to 7,450 MB/s Sequential Write Speed Up to 6,900 MB/s Random Read (4KB, QD32) Up to 1,400,000 IOPS Random Write (4KB, QD32) Up to 1,550,000 IOPS Random Read (4KB, QD1) Up to 22,000 IOPS Random Write (4KB, QD1) Up to 80,000 IOPS Operating Temperature 0°C to 70°C Reliability (MTBF) 1.5 Million Hours Endurance 1,200 TBW (Total Bytes Written) Get it at the link below: Samsung 990 PRO SSD 2TB NVMe SSD (MZ-V9P2T0B/AM): $369.99 (Sold and Shipped by Amazon US) Good to know This Amazon deal is U.S. specific, and not available in other regions unless specified.
