HTC Announces the Touch Diamond, the "iphone killer"

Recommended Posts

Well from the looks of it, it just might live up to its expectations. This device basically packs everything one might look for on a phone, well, almost everything.

They've posted quite a few videos of the device, some looks reproduced while others are hands on, at their youtube channel http://www.youtube.com/htc/

As for the spec, see below.

However, the spec doesn't mention anything about a MicroSD slot though. Although it has a 4GB internal storage, that just might not be enough. Can anyone confirm this? All in all, it does seem like a full featured phone. Can't wait for it to start shipping.

Looks interesting. Largest question though is what browser will it use and the implementation of it.

That should be obvious. WinMo => Pocket IE. Now if only MS got off it's ass and released deepfish.

EDIT: And what's with all the phones being branded as "iPhone killers". The iPhone has practically no market share. If anything, try "RAZR killer" or "Blackberry killer".

VERY interesting - and hopefully will be available by the time I am due an upgrade.

A few things though - no slide-out keyboard - that's gonna take me some time to get used to - because the Microsoft on-screen keyboard just sucks.

No flash!?

You're right Windows Mobile is powerful but the interface is so old and not optimized for finger touch, thanks god and many developers there're many free applications to solve this problem.

edit: Hold on, video playback? multi-touch?

The HSDPA is attractive if it comes with a nice browser. Maybe opera?

Oh, and the VGA resolution is a nice thing to have as well.

The 3D weather effects are really nice from what I saw in the video. (Y) Love the flipping clock as well.

Here's an actual video of it in use: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=JJtmnsHDVbk

Main thing to work on is speed and fluidity right now as its a bit rigid navigating around.

I'm hoping this mail viewer is a joke though:

LOL, ....

See the "outlook" text on the bottom left hand corner of the envelope? My guess is that the screen allows you to switch between multiple email accounts. I could be wrong though, not sure. Anyways, you could always just use windows mobile's mail application if you find that annoying.

I don't like Windows Mobile, I think Mac OS X is one of the iPhone's biggest selling points, the UI works better. I used Windows Mobile and found it frustrating.

Yep, well said. It's just unbelieveably easy and fluid to do things on the iphone. However this phone looks promising.

    • $80 or 90%, anything else would be financial suicide one way or another.
    • Or... just use Bitwarden. Free, and has on-prem option as well. Works both on desktop and mobile, wherever you are. The age of local password files is over.
    • Thanks
    • I actually got to use one of those so called "backup codes" once. It was for a customer, I choose the backup code option, and by the grace of god, they actually hade them printed out. Imagine my surprise, when after using the backup code, Google then told use we had to enter a code they just sent to the gmail address we currently did not have access to. I was not amused, Google backup codes should be the end all get out of jail free card, because you had to have access to the account to even get them.
    • On the topic of being locked out of a service. Recently two different friends of mine got locked out of their Google accounts. Both were hack attempts and one of them is waiting 30 days before he can get back in. He had backup codes and MFA but not a passkey. It was a browser token hack. Anyhow he has to wait 30 days for the dispute or whatever to end. The other person only had a password and is screwed losing all of the email, docs and years of photos. Google won’t help her at all. Her fault because she had no backup/recovery setup. Enable passkeys if possible. Also do NOT use browser based password managers. If using a cloud service make sure it is one you can fully sync to one of your devices so you can back it up. Like a PC or Mac with some backup drive plugged into it. Google is the worst to use IMHO. You can’t sync your photos at all. You have to use the “Take Out” service which is manual and takes days. That service strips the meta data from your photos. Also Google Docs synced to a device are useless without a Google accounts. MS Office/Libre Office is not going to open a link to a Google doc to a dead account.
