GTA IV: Not very impressed.

It's most likely not your TV.

If you're using the PS3 version, go into the Display Settings in the PS3 XMB and go through the setup.

Choose HDMI, UNCHECK all resolutions besides 1080p, (You can't uncheck the 480) and then run the game, it will render it in 1080p. For some reason it wants to render the game in 630p or upscale it to 720p.

Let everyone know if this helps on all of your tv's, Most 1080p HDTV's will look better with the game forced to 1080p

If they turned HDR + Bloom off and got rid of the same thing for car headlights, I mean car headlights in the Day? That must be doing so many ridiculous calculations every frame to find what the HDR is bouncing off.

Framerate is unbelievbly crap for something that doesnt even get rendered at 720p. Good game non the less, but they really shouldn't shipped the product as it is.

my version is 720 p :p anyway. to my point.

Game HDR is NOT the same as HDR used in CG renders. there's is no light bouncing or caluclations of the sort. HDR in games simply refer to high dynamic range of the render output. meanign that colors aren't just colors but may have emperature as well. so you can have a plan white, but when you look at the sky, the white may have a higher "temperature" or rather it's whiteness is beyond white, wich is what's used to create better glows, and such. like the sun will create a lot more glow than a puny street light.

And this HDR caculation and glow actually has barely any impact on performance. I've also never had the problems of not being able to turn because of low FPS, I have problems tunring because the cars have ridiculous handling. even the high end sports cars needs to break to waalk speed to turn. that's just stupid.

When reviews give the game a 10 for graphics, they take into the account the scale of the game. The graphics are the best out there in this category of game. You can't say it has way more jaggies compared to... say CoD4. It's all relative. Also a 10 doesn't mean it's perfect.

OK, so I had a quick 30 min play on my mates PS3 - wasn't really impressed.

Then my bro came up and we played on his 360 on my hi-def TV, got to say it looked a lot better, but still quite dark at night.

I found the city to be drab, dull, etc. I have been introduced to GTA by Vice City and so by comparison GTA4 will be dull - it's a lot less colourful, the music not to my tastes, etc. Really didn't consider it a game worth spending my money on.

Then we took it online...

I will be buying GTA4 asap! It just rocks on Live!

I'd have to say that the graphics are actually much better than I expected. GTA games have never been known for having groundbreaking graphics, and it's felt in the past that the looks of the games were sacrificed in order to focus more on content and sheer scope. When I played GTA4 the first time, I was surprised by how slick and modern it looked compared to my expectations.

I'm really enjoying the game, more and more as I get further into the story.

After spending a good amount of time playing GTA4, I've come up with a few thoughts on the game.

I can say that it is definitely a great game. The game is just so big and detailed its just amazing. However, I do get the occasional FPS problems especially when I've got like 6-7 cop cars chasing me around. I don't have any big issues with graphics... any smoothing in 720p is virtually invisible in 1080i and its pretty "sharp" looking.

Some of the radios are absolute crap other than that multiplayer online is out of this world. ;) It's worth its value more than GT5:P, which infact I haven't played in two weeks...

I thought PS3 looked better although 360 was more sharper but more popins as well

I'm not going to enter into a 360 > PS3 (or either way) debate. I played the PS3 version on a SD screen, the 360 on an HD screen - so I cannot make a fair comparison.

 , no you cant. They look very similar and its really down to personal preference (if you own both consoles) on which you buy it.

This thread is pretty pointless. The people not impressed with this game are ones that either have their standards too high or were unrealistically expecting perfection. While GTA IV is not perfect by and means, it is pretty damn good just the way it is!

How is it pointless? The fact that many online reviews have given this game 10/10 to me illustrates perfection, which of course as you pointed out, it is not. Many people will buy this game based on reviews.

The game is amazing. I agree though its not 10/10. It is however a game I cannot put down which is a big plus point. With games only time can really tell if it earns a 10/10 score. I know with GTA IV the reviewers were restricted and were made to go to certain places to review the game rather than being given copies of the game. There's two games that are on my 10/10 list, Half-Life (Mainly due to its mods though) and Goldeneye on the N64. These are both old games yet they are still very addictive.

You know if they were to rate something a 9.9 then a better one comes out, the next logical step up is a 10. 10/10 means it meets all gaming expectations, not a perfection of realism.

    • EA reached out to our reporter that mainly does gaming content and reviewed loads of other games, why would this be shocking to anyone? I admit maybe we were considered this time around because of the extra coverage UFC was getting and they wanted a broader audience for this release? IDK. I can tell you that we aren't paid to do the reviews, the fun part of it is (mostly) being able to keep what we review and giving an honest opinion on what we're reviewing.
