Wanting a zoom lense

Hi, I have a D40 and Im wanting to buy a lense for it but i'm not too sure what to look for and where?

I'll be buying from the UK.

I understand it needs an internal focus motor for autofocus. Which brands should I go for? I have budget in mind so about ?100-?200 for it preferably. I know lenses are expensive and you get what you pay for but I wont be using it professionally so it's no major deal. Currently I'm using the standard 18-55 lense it comes with.

Thats the one i got and love it, its a little slow with AF in low light but other than that i dont see anything wrong

Apart from the fact that that's for Canon cameras, and it appears the Nikon version doesn't support the D40

What are sigma lenses like? Are they a good(ish) brand?

Some sigmas are good, some are bad. Depends really.

For your price, get the 55-200 VR.

I've played with that lens at work. If you get it you'll love it. The VR makes a noticeable difference.

Does the VR have any sort of noticeable impact on battery life?

yes it impacts battery life but not significantly.
