How can you help Neowin help you?

Whitelisting the site

Neowin depends primarily on advertising revenue to cover all the costs of running the site.

This includes purchasing hardware, maintaining and upgrading it, we also have paid staff on our team for news article submissions and development, as well as accounting and all costs needed to maintain the business.

Since the beginning we have pledged not to include intrusive advertising, such as pop ups or full page ads, instead we have a maximum of 3 units per page worked into the design. The ads are therefore less noticeable than on other websites because they are accounted for within our design. Simply whitelisting Neowin to allow the display of the ads goes a long way to helping us maintain the site and offer extra features to our guests and registered members.

You can view the major changes to Neowin right here.

Subscribing

Neowin has two Subscription packages, Tier 1 and Tier 2, the latter removes all advertising from the website and costs $28 (USD) a year. Tier 1 costs $14 (USD) and adds a few features to the site such as a personal blog, a subscriber forum in which our rules are a bit more relaxed as well as other features; you can view all the features of the two subscriptions here.

Donating

Neowin wouldn't be the place it is today if we didn't get our moderators and fellow admins completely drunk once in a while, it helps us forget such issues as multiple "Post your..." threads, spammers and people that really like to invoke our warn system -not to mention those who get themselves banned, who spend their free time making multiple dupe accounts (a valid email is required for this). Lets also not forget those registered members that gloat that they block Neowins inline ads (our main source of income), despite our having a policy of no pop-ups or intrusive ads throughout our forums.

Secondly, unbelievable as it may sound, some people have actually PM'd me asking how they can donate to Neowin without becoming a subscriber (huh?) or are already subscribers and want to give us yet more money!

If you want to make a donation, simply add the amount you want to donate, to the PayPal account [email protected]. Please leave a descriptive message along with your Neowin member name, and Redmak or I will edit this post with your member name.

Um... ok... You turned to outright begging almost now :s

Hardly. People are asking about it, just because you don't want to donate anymore then your subscription doesn't mean other people might not. As Neobond said, people do ask to donate more, and rather then PM exchange, its now public and people who didn't think they could donate more now know they can if they wish.

excellent, so the intellitxt ads are to be removed?

There are no intelliTXT ads in the forums for registered members. If banners provided enough income then yes we would remove the intelliTXT links but they dn't and I'm sure you'll agree they are better than pop ups or full page (in between) ads?

true they aren't on the forums but are on the main page/news areas and i'd put them on a same level as popup ads as they do in fact popup

Key point though: popups often steal focus away from the current page being browsed. Intellitext ads are inline and so don't disrupt scrolling or the user's interaction.

I've gotten so much out of neowin over the years I geniuinely felt they deserved a beer for their work. mine was only a small donation but worthwhile. There are many so called tech sites who want subscriptions to get their so called answers, a neowin sub is a bargain.

I figure donating a little for a service I've used for so many years even before signing up is long overdue on my part, and I don't count the subscription as that was so cheap.

Just make sure it goes towards a GOOD beer :p  cheers!

Not really. The admins have the right to ask for donations anyway; they put great work into this site - $14/?10/?7 is a more than reasonable price for a year's subscription anyway.

I would consider giving more money to Neowin but I refuse to use paypal ever again.

Out of interest, may I ask why?

Subscribed this morning, and donated a small amount now. I want proof that this is going on alcohol (in the form of pictures) rather than anything sensible ;)

I'd like to subscribe too, screw the 143 posts, I want to contribute! ha..

Yeah so I'll subscribe when I caaaan, good luck with the beer fund, you deserve it :D

I subscribed at about 1 AM Christmas Day last year, so the next renewal will be this coming Christmas Day.

So make that Christmas Day beer. Cheers with the fat red white-bearded man. :p

    • I think this will appeal to a lot of enthusiasts. If the thermals are similar to those of a single system in a compact case, many people running multiple systems may choose to combine them into one machine, provided the case footprint remains reasonable.
    • No, "a great deal" for 32GB of DDR5 is $50, not $350. I mean I see what you mean, that it's a decent price compared to what's currently available, but you really should put a disclaimer in this articles explaining that it's still multiple times more expensive than it used to be.
    • Linux 7.1 stable launch looms as Linus Torvalds releases the final release candidate by Paul Hill Linus Torvalds has just released what’s expected to be the final release candidate of Linux 7.1, rc7. The Linux founder said that this RC is not small, but smaller than recent releases, which is a good sign because he expects the stable version to drop next week if things continue on this trajectory. Linux kernels see a merge window for the first two weeks of their life, where developers add new features, then there are about seven or eight weeks of release candidates before the stable version. Typically, there are seven release candidates, but if more time is needed, then an eighth release candidate is released too. This week’s RC’s biggest area of fixes was for GPUs, with networking just behind. Torvalds said that the rest of the release was “pretty random and spread out” with some architecture fixes, driver fixes, filesystem improvements, and build fixes for more unusual configs. In terms of specific pieces of hardware receiving improvements in this update, we had more AMD Zen6 models supported and fixes for AMD SDMA 7.1 and GFX11. Hardware that got improvements includes Lenovo laptops, HONOR laptops, and MSI laptops. Here are the changelogs for those: ASoC: amd: acp: Add DMI quirk for Lenovo Yoga Pro 7 15ASH11 Input: atkbd - add DMI quirk for Lenovo Yoga Air 14 (83QK) Input: atkbd - skip deactivate for HONOR BCC-N's internal keyboard ASoC: amd: yc: Add MSI Raider A18 HX A9WJG to quirk table ASoC: amd: yc: Enable internal mic on MSI Bravo 17 C7VF When the stable Linux 7.1 is released, it will be up to distribution maintainers, such as Canonical and Red Hat, to release the update to their users via the update manager. Some versions of Linux will get it before others, and some will never get it at all. Fedora and Arch-based distros will be among the first to get it, though. If you don’t get it, the security fixes will be backported to your system’s kernel, so you won’t be at risk, but you won’t get newer hardware support, which is fine if your computer works now.
