Stardock involvement with Neowin FAQ 1 2
by Steven P.- 42 replies
- 70.1k views
I've put together a little FAQ due to the ill informed comments here. Neowin is a self sustaining independent company, we don't receive money from Stardock, and they also won't determine our fate like other sites that are taken over by large companies such as AOL. Neowin will disappear when we can't fund ourselves, and even then Brad probably wouldn't take that lying down as he is partly responsible for turning Neowin from a hobby into a company. Q: Does Stardock own Neowin? A: They have a 40% stake in Neowin, with 60% equally shared between the two founders Steven Parker & Marcel Klum. Q: Why? A: Stardock turned us from hobby site into a limited liability company…

How can you help Neowin help you? 1 2 3 4

Whitelisting the site Neowin depends primarily on advertising revenue to cover all the costs of running the site. This includes purchasing hardware, maintaining and upgrading it, we also have paid staff on our team for news article submissions and development, as well as accounting and all costs needed to maintain the business. Since the beginning we have pledged not to include intrusive advertising, such as pop ups or full page ads, instead we have a maximum of 3 units per page worked into the design. The ads are therefore less noticeable than on other websites because they are accounted for within our design. Simply whitelisting Neowin to allow the display of the ad…

Why register at Neowin?
by Steven P.- 0 replies
- 83.9k views
As a guest viewing Neowin we place very few restrictions on the site. Guests may: Search the forums (although flood control is enabled). View embedded images in topics. However, we hide many of our (non tech related) "off-topic" forums, to make the site "work safe" and guests may not take part in giveaways (a comment in the giveaway article is always required). Registering offers the following: Fewer ads. Off topic forums. Can comment on news articles. Like forum posts and news comments Participation in giveaways. Become part of our community So while registration isn't required and the site isn't crippled for guests, registering offers a few additional benefits. …

The Neowin Most Valuable Contributor (MVC) Program
by Barney T.- 0 replies
- 20.1k views
The Neowin Most Valuable Contributor (MVC) Program The MVC program was created by Neowin staff to provide special recognition to those members who go “above and beyond”. Whether it is by contributing to questions or problems posted in the forum or by providing original and valuable content, they enhance the atmosphere of Neowin and exemplify the “members helping members” philosophy around which the Neowin forums were created. It was our desire to acknowledge those who have been long time loyal and dedicated contributors - those who care about our site and are always willing and anxious to help others, and who do so in a patient and intelligent manner. The special MV…

Just a heads up I'll be upgrading some things, and reconfiguring some other things over this weekend. Hopefully then followed by upgrading the forums if I have time. If the site is unavailable for brief periods, don't panic!

Here are the results of the previous poll that was up for ages, but it's pretty clear that only a third haven't, or don't want to upgrade to Windows 11. Of course that may have changed for some people who actually upgraded and saw how "different" productivity flow is between Windows 10 and Windows 11. Without further ado, here's the new poll: Yes, we ask What is your main browser? But mainly due to the fact that we ran a story earlier this week in which we share that Edge has just passed double digits in market share in April 2022 As for our poll, I voted Chrome. I would have moved to Edge already if it handled media castin…

A few main page tweaks
by Steven P.- 1 follower

We've moved send news tip to the top right, and in its old place (on the main page only) we've added text to make it clearer there are layout formats to choose from The layout bit does now not display an empty bit in articles (just the Newsletter portion itself) We've added a new overlay for guides. OH now is also a good time to remind guests that you'll see fewer ads if you login to Neowin https://www.neowin.net/forum/login/ plus you will get to participate with our great community and free thinkers in the news comments!

Previously, mobile comments were hard to moderate because all of the icons were bunched up together, and likes were not even visible. Example (old way) And now: On mobile, likes no longer cause the other icons to move around or get added on a second line. The update was also moved to the desktop view: Comment management tools, such as edit and report at the top must be hovered over to see them, this keeps the comments looking cleaner. Not hovered on ^^

Alternating row colors in topic lists. Guests can now select light and dark mode in the forums (and on the main site). All of the forums here: https://www.neowin.net/forum/forum/58-real-world-news/ now show participation guidelines in full at the top of each forum. Outdated pinned topics unpinned. Relevant pinned topics that were auto-locked -> unlocked. Group colors for members in posts are now their correct colors again (thanks @DaveLegg). Removed dupe group name (text) from posts under the member badge. Enabled ability to post Anonymously in several forums (more on that below). Added a "Restricted (no Anonymous posts…

The main page is now set to Darkside by default, I did this on the forums months ago, and no-one complained Every time I view the site as a guest I feel like my face is burning off Hopefully with the darker theme new guests will stick around longer and explore the site a bit. You can choose Orion (the white theme) through the theme toggle at the top of the Sidebar Members can also use the member dropdown in the header navigation. I also tweeted about it: Follow us! (we're also on Facebook).

psa Alternating topic row colors are back (Light & Dark)
by Steven P.- 1 follower

For some reason, it was never ported back to the forum theme, which instead had a massive list of white or dark topics. Next up I am going to see if I can get alternating post colors working again. This is a follow up to this change made earlier:

I have enabled a theme switcher for guests so they can choose between Light and Dark mode, and I have set the Light mode back to default. I am going to work on it in the coming weeks and tone it down a bit, because it is rather bright! Guests can find the theme switcher at the top right of the forums (this is also already possible on the main news site).

light_dark.mp4 Not everyone is a fan of a dark theme, so we've made it more obvious how people can switch right in the header, it's in the same spot when logged in too and it will now remember your choice properly so long as you allow site (Neowin) cookies. We will also do this for the forums, I need to first look into how to do this properly for guests since they don't have access to the theme switcher menu.

psa Neowin has a newsletter

I have taken it upon myself to do a daily newsletter for the site, you can sign up here https://www.getrevue.co/profile/neowin and view the test issue I did and the first "official" newsletter I sent out moments ago. Feedback on the format and content is welcome, but I do plan to promote mainly US-centric news and not limit it to Microsoft only. I am thinking about doing a Microsoft Weekly newsletter on Sunday to complement the weekly article in the hope we can drive some traffic there. I forgot to mention that the newsletter might end up in your "Promotions" folder in Gmail so you will have to move it and add neowin AT getrevue DOT co to your cont…

psa Couple of darkside fixes in the news site
by Steven P.- 1 follower

Thanks to some bug fixing work by @Redmak the comments (and reply to comment) box is now dark instead of eye blindingly white 😂😂 Prev / Next articles are now stacked and stand out a bit more below articles Earlier this week @DaveLeggremoved some javascript and cleaned up some code that was no longer used (for example we now only use one advertiser to display in page ads, before it was two, which required two sets of javascripts). For guests we completely removed the CKeditor javascript from loading in the background (some 500kb) this was overlooked and a bug, because guests could never comment so it makes no sense to l…

psa Threads now autolock after a year of no replies
by Steven P.- 1 follower

We have purchased a plugin that automatically locks a thread after a year of no replies. We came to this length of time after initial testing and feedback from members, so thanks for that! There are several forums that are not included with the autolocking of threads, they are The Media Room, A Collection of Essential Guides, Reviews by Members for Members, Science News & Discussion, Members Metropolis & Soapbox forums (member only forums) Backstage Pass (subscriber only forum) and this Site Announcements forum. Pinned topics also are not auto locked. If you come across a topic that should be unlocked you can report the first po…

At 12PM CET the forum will go offline for an upgrade to 4.5 which is a major version update from our 4.4.x version. It brings with it may new features and improvements (including better moderation tools, such as banning people from a topic) you can read about some of the changes here https://invisioncommunity.com/news/company/welcome-to-invision-community-45-r1206/ (note that Matt links to individual topics about features, because there are many changes). Hopefully our upgrade will go smoothly, but if it doesn't we can always roll back. In any case please be patient while we figure out problems should they arise.

Once again you can select the Darkside theme and be amazed at great it is! It is much improved over the previous version You can see the editor toolbar now Media embeds (like Twitter) are now dark too, and styled properly within the post Other elements that were forgotten in the previous version like some fonts and text fields have been styled Things we are aware of: We know some buttons like "pinned" in forum lists and others are still white Right now we have not set it to the default for guests, so if you want to see it, login! Feedback welcomed and a huge thanks to @DaveLegg for a great job!
