Wait... you think XP was a major upgrade to Windows 2000, but that Vista was a "minor update to XP?"

Give me a break. Half the OS was rewritten for Vista. That's why it has the compatibility reputation it does.

I think he might be refering to XP's begining ... and I don't mean Whistler... He is probably refering to Project Neptune...which alot of what was in that became Whistler then XP.

If you ask me... the next release should contain some of the following.

A true SAFE mode that runs independent of the NTBOOT Loader. (Either CD/DVD)

If those files corrupt then you can't goto Safe mode without booting to your CD/DVD and choosing advanced options... Command Line to repair those files now that maynot work.

The example of this is your CD for XP is at GOLD level(No Service Pack) and your OS is now at 3... The FIXMBR and FIXMBR won't allow it to boot. Unless you remade and Slipstreamed and reburned your XP CD.

The same is true about VISTA....

I would also like to see dual Start Menu's one where user files are installed to...And OS/MS programs goto the Other one...maybe even a UI to create your new ones...

On the Login screen the ability to create custom Boot modes... IE = Work , Online, Game , General use..

So that the OS will only load what is needed.

This will save in memory.

And Yes we probably will need it... Since the Time line for new devices will dictate the need for it.

That means what Hardware Manufactures produce ... MS wants to be able to have it compatible with the OS.

Also if MS were smart they would make User Interfaces that would allow windows to talk to your cell Phones . By default to download music and your picture files.

An example of why we need it is if MS didn't release Win98 then we would not be able to run more memory. (there wold be have been machines that can only handle 128megs of memory) MAX. SO that is probably why we need a new relese.

I mean their 3-5 year product cycle which is really to keep either ahead or on tract with hardware manufacturers.

It might depending on what kind of hardware is going to be out there. I mean for example devices that are 3.0 USB might not be downward compatible and there might not be OS support for earlier release. You can never tell.

Give me:

Smarter Folder View settings - it should at the very least know what folders should always be displayed a certain way, don't turn Program Files into a pictures folder, and quit thinking that C:\Windows is full of music.

Drag and Drop in the breadcrumb bar.

Be able to quickly and easily (with mouse or keyboard shortcut) toggle preview of all windows in the taskbar. Or at least add some indication of mouseover events in Flip3D.

It would be intuitive for me, if I wanted to move some file FileA from C:\Users\Username\Documents\Academics\2008-2009 up, say, two directories to C:\Users\Username\Documents, for me to just drag the file in explorer, onto the breadcrumb bar, and drop it onto Documents, but this is not currently allowed.

No idea why it doesn't work for you...but works perfectly for me.

OSs always need to be up to date. And wince microsoft way of adding new stuff is by releasing new iterations of windows, yes, we DO need windows 7.

IMO vista is way better than XP in many aspects. But XP still gets the job done for the average joe, so I dont think it is wrong that they keep using XP. I know I won't.

The registry, as much as I hate it, seems to serve its purpose when it is used by the OS itself. It's 3rd-party apps that screw the registry up (and by screwing up I mean keeping entries that will be problematic in the future). (Example: install cod4, delete cod4 folder inside programs and files, and try to install it or uninstall it. won't work, because the registry keys are still there and the installer will think that cod is still there. THAT'S the problem of the registry). I usually dont have this kind of problems because I use system restore which backs up the whole thing. But windows doesnt provide a registry cleaner, the app installers sometimes don't have the repair install option, so there can be times when your last resort is to delete entries yourself or use a registry cleaner.

That said, bring on Windows 7 :D

Maybe M$ should copy that from Directory Opus.

This topic made my head hurt. Win7 is a definite improvement over Vista, which itself was an improvement over XP (despite how the naysayers protest). Computing technology is rapidly advancing and the OS has to keep up with it. People can whine all they want but no-one is being forced to upgrade.

Is it a step forward from Vista, and a fantastic OS? Hell yes.

7 will put Microsoft back on track of that their is no doubt and improvement in the world of computing is always good

No I don't even dislike Vista, I use it (and W7 aswell) but the image Vista has because of it's rocky release companys have completely disregarded it no matter if it is 2 service packs later. To a lot of people it is still "horrible and buggy" because a lot of people are too stubborn to give Vista a shot after the new service packs, MS have to release a new OS because they have stopped XP support, and because they refuse to use Vista they need to release a better OS that has a better release, which is probably built on Vista anyway...
