On March 6, 2008, Steve Jobs announced that in June 2008, there would be an update for the iPhone and iPod touch, which would again have an unspecified "nominal cost" for the iPod, due to the different way that Apple accounts for it compared to the iPhone. The update will include an application called the App Store which will enable iPod touch owners to download additional "apps" for the device.

Personally i think that as a point of principle its out of order to have to pay any extra cost to unlock functionality of a device that cost me ?329.99 only a month ago!

Am i being unresonable? I would appreciate other peoples views on this. :))

Then don't buy it? Its added functionality, not required.

$1 , $10 or $100, that's still not going to avoid the feeling of being cheated. You bought a device for its functionality and future thinking only to be told that anything new will cost you.

I think it's a rip, even though I don't own one. The fact it can't be used as a usb flash drive without a hack annoys me :(

A good point, i just feel cheated, almost being punished for buying the device before the update. I guess its the price of being an 'early adopter'.

QFT.

I do think that Apple are being a bit greedy here. They've hooked in the customers and then decide to milk more money out of them for software add-ons that other companies would do for free via a firmware update.

For the touch the main reason to get the upgrade would be for the App store. Not much else will really be that different. Keeping that in mind, it's retarded for Apple to charge for it. Because all you are doing is paying for an update so that you can buy more apps from them. When jailbreaking is so easy already, why would you pay to upgrade to have to pay for apps? It makes no sense.

I paid a lot of money for my 16GB iPod Touch and now Apple wants me to pay $9.95 for a software upgrade. Pathetic, just pathetic. I'm disgusted at Apple. Something like this encourages consumers to find other ways to acquire updates.

How much did Microsoft charge for updating the original Zune to Zune 2.0 firmware?

Absolutely nothing. And they introduced new features (wireless sync, podcasts, etc.) and a completely revamped interface.
