Mighty Mouse - not so mighty after all?

Recommended Posts

The Mighty Mouse is the worst mouse I've ever seen (And I think everyone else would agree with me).

Change it while you still can!

The ball gets dirty very easily. You could try cleaning it, but it sounds like a pain... return it or replace it, if you can.

My Mighty Mouse's wheel wouldn't roll up. is that common? It's very annoying, and I have it for maybe 3 weeks. :p

What should I do?

This is a (sadly) common problem with the Mighty Mouse.

Below you can find Apple's instructions on how to clean your Mighty Mouse.

How to clean your Mighty Mouse

Last Modified on: May 30, 2007

Although your Mighty Mouse never needs to be fed or watered, you may occasionally find that you need to clean it.

If your Mighty Mouse is covered in fingerprints or its surface has become soiled, it can be gently wiped with a clean lint-free cloth. If necessary, moisten the cloth using only water, making sure not to oversaturate it. Be aware that the mouse contains electronic components that may be damaged if water drips from the cloth into the mouse via the seam around the scroll ball or around its underside.

The same procedure can be used to clean the scroll ball on your Mighty Mouse if it has become discolored or dirty. Use a clean lint-free cloth lightly moistened with water. Wipe the ball and the surrounding area, making sure to rotate the ball itself to ensure complete coverage. If the scrolling feels rough or if the scroll ball isn't scrolling up, down, or side-to-side, hold the mouse upside-down and roll the ball vigorously while cleaning it to help dislodge any particles that may have collected on the internal hardware.

The Mighty (not!) Mouse is an abomination - the 360 scroll ball is a nice idea, but crummy implementation, and the mouse is unconformable to boot. Apple should just leave mice design to Microsoft and Logitech, as they have no idea how to build a comfortable, reliable mouse.

The problem is they're trying to apply their ever-popular minimalist design to something which isn't meant to be designed that way.

Mice need grooves and grips. Having a small smooth pebble-shaped object with a miniscule ball-thing on the front isn't what I'd call user-friendly.

I really liked my Mighty Mouse for the first few months, but what turned me off was the spotty right-click detection. I found myself having to lift all my other fingers off the mouse completely when using the right-click "zone" on the MM or it would register as a regular left-click.

Not a terrible mouse but I like my Kensington trackball ("Expert Mouse" by name, but it's a trackball) much better. Bonus: it looks like it belongs in an episode of Stargate.

I guess I'm gonna have to buy a new mouse. mannnn! It's so beautiful. :(

Any compact bluetooth logitech mouses out there?

edit: u Apple fanboys turn your coat real quickly, eh? :) lol

Well, rubbish is rubbish :)

I'm using a Logitech v470 right now. It works nicely, but it's definitely more basic - just two buttons and a clickable mouse wheel.

I'm still loyal to my Mighty Mouse simply because it looks awesome. Yes, yes, I know, but I don't find it all too bad. I use the trackpad for scrolling anyway.

So everytime you want to scroll a webpage you take your and off the mouse, and use the trackpad? man.... that's a real burden.

I know this isn't recommended, but what I did when the scroll ball wasn't scrolling was to wipe the ball, turning it fiercely so it got wiped all the way round, with a cologne-impregnated tissue, the sort that come in foil sachets to keep them moist. It's worked a treat, at least so far (for a few weeks). I found the MM took a bit of getting used to after a Logitech one, but it looked so cool that I persevered. And now I really like that cute little scroll ball and find the mouse as a whole comfortable and easy to operate.

since i wash my handy like every 10 minutes and my room is almost sterile, i love my mighty mouse. ;)

it looks great and for me it works great. i clean my computer parts every 4 or 5 weeks anyway, so my macbook, my speakers and of course the mouse aswell, so its not that a big deal for me that it gets dirty very fast.

plus, i could not live without the squeeze-buttons (expos? for me). i know, logitec mouses have additional buttons aswell but... i love squeezing my MM.

the mighty mouse might be one of the worst thing i bought....glad I don't have it anymore

Agreed...very awkward and inconsistent to use. I put mine back in the box after 2 weeks. The Razer Pro has yet to dissapoint.

    • I totally disagree. Very little good comes out of governments all around the world manipulating everything they can and usually the people are not the benefactors. What you say about being restricted and expensive sounds almost like the arguments against firearms and why banning them will protect people as if making something illegal somehow will prevent the criminals from having and using them. AI being far less mainstream could simply mean the average person will not benefit, but "big brother" and the corporations will benefit, which is almost for sure NOT a good thing.

    • "connect with audiences" is the most obvious corporate speak you can think of. I only bought Need for Speed from EA because it was the only racing game with cops in existence and I dig that. Now that they killed off NFS franchise, I have nothing to spend money on. EA is officially dead for me, just like Ubisoft which I've been boycotting for some 20 years now...
