Yahtzee Reviews MGS4

Recommended Posts

Ugh one thing that got my attention is you can not shoot when you are taking cover. You have to get out of cover in order to use your gun. That's pretty lame...

Anyway, he had a good point, if you are not a MGS fan you might as well play the first games on PS2 and then decide about playing this game. I hate that they over hyped this game, it will just create more disappointment.

Cheers

I thought you could blind fire? Am I thinking of something else?

Agreed with this review completely. I am a fan of the MGS but MGS4 is not the game it should of been after all the expectations. Great in most respects but flawed by the overly complex story which i agree was badly rewitten and overly long cutscenes.

I still liked the game though and i will play it again sometime this week as i enjoyed it alot.

Wow! I didn't expect that sort of post from you.

22 minutes and you judge an entire game?

If I'm being totally honest it blew it's knee caps off with a shotgun at that point and never recovered. I though I'd bought a game not a interactive movie!

But I could easily go on about the clumsy combat, dated HUD and other bugs that niggle me so much it made a chore to complete but this isn't the place for it.

Unless of course they don't really like heavy story based games, but then im completely puzzled at why they bought the finale to a series notorious for heavy story/cutscenes.

I very much enjoy a good story. I've play through the excellent Monkey Island series as well as more modern classics such as Grim Fandango (if you've never played it. I COMMAND you to buy it!), System(/Bio) Shock & Half Life. I love a good narrative. But I do honestly believe that the story, within MGS4, is badly paced, bogged down in bull**** and easily side tracked. But if you can cut through that more power to you.

It's not a bad game per se, but it's not a "OMFG BESTEST GAME EVARS" by quite a distance. It strikes me much the way Halo did. Good, but not groundbreaking and certainly not worth the lavish praise it has been given. I could go off on a tirade about the 'monkey see monkey do' mentality of games reviewers in general. But again. Another thread another time. :p

So um, how long did you really play the game for?

Cause if it was "22 minutes", how can you possibly comment on the whole story within MGS4 in that sort of time scale?

Completed it. I'd paid ?40 and I wasn't able to return it.://

Never played a MGS game before?

I played part of MGS on a dodgy emulator then completed MGS2 many years ago. But neither struck me as being this dull.

I can understand if you think there are too many cutscenes or they're too long, etc., but give it some time to make that judgment. The cutscenes are much more scarce later on, so if you're only giving it 22 minutes, you're not giving it a fair chance.

EDIT: Posted that before seeing your latest.

Wow, really, to each its own i guess, i was completely glued to the controller, i played 20 hours straight on Saturday, im not exaggerating, had it been dull i would have fallen sleep or just stopped completely...

I respect your opinion though, for me it was money well spent, it entertain me for 24 hours for the first play through and God knows how much more i will play it.

You should sell it using the Neowin, you can at least recover some of your 40 quid:))

it's Yahtzee. They're not serious reviews... they're just some guys thoughts and opinions. But very funny ones at that!

(jamesyfx's subconscious: Thoughts and opinions? Isn't that a review? :o)

...

Oh I dunno. I don't watch them to get an idea of what a game is like. Just for fun. How does that sound?

Aye each to their own, that's his idea of a groundbreaking and innovative game. Fair enough, but it isn't mine.

Might not be a bad idea tbh. :D

As someone who loves Yahtzee and who tends to agree with him more often than not, and also as many here now who is new to the world of Metal Gear, this time around I only half agree with his points. And with one of his points, I definitely strongly disagree...

First the part I tend agree with, and that is the overall story mechanism and execution.

I know this is going to be blasphemy to the die hard fans, but the story is getting a bit over the top as the game goes on.

Here is the real kicker. I absolutely LOVE the meaning behind the overall story, I think as far as video games go no one has tackled the subject of "Big Brother" (for lack of a better term and also dumbing it down) and the war machine quite like this game has. Not even close. Especially with the onset of nanotechnology being a real thing (anyone interested can read Ray Kurzweil: The Singularity Is Near), I think the overall theme is brilliant and poignant.

With that said, my admiration for the overall theme is slowly being taken away by some incredibly corny cliches and just way to out there concepts. Sure, it is a video game, but the overall concept of it all is indeed based in reality, but then you have things like the B&B, which bring it into cheesy sci-fi territory. Sure, they are cool as hell to look at and make for great video game baddies, but they are so unbelievable compared to some of the other more realistic elements of the game that it forces the game to find itself existing in a half reality/half science fiction based world, and I would have preferred it personally to stay more on the reality side of things. I know, I know, from my back research I have done, the game has always had elements to it of this nature, but it seems they are taking it a tad further this time around as it is the "not to distant future."

Also although the cutscenes audio and visuals truly cannot be touched by any other game, the dialog itself is definitely poorly written, especially scenes that take place in the codec. Seriously the voice acting is indeed pretty bad.

I also do believe, just as Yahtzee, things can be told much quicker than they are told, and they tend to be drawn out because they can be, not because they need to be or it serves a purpose.

WITH ALL THAT SAID, I have stated this is one of the first games that even has me caring about the story itself, so keep in mind I have never been a big story person, but indeed as time goes on, I am not enjoying the story as much as I initially did, and definitely see that it has some pretty glaring flaws IMO.

Again though, the story could be the worse in the world, but the production value of the cutscenes visuals and sound is bar none, and I would watch them just for that. They are so amazing it is not even funny.

Finally, I wholeheartedly disagree with his stance on the gameplay. I 110% disagree, as I believe the gameplay is great. Absolutely great. Not sure what game he played for saying that the gameplay lacks, I really am not.

Oh yeah, I bought two Zero Punctuation shirts today too!

You can buy shirts here... SPLITREASON.com

Just search for Zero Punctuation if this direct link does not work

Off to play some MGS4, I am itching to try and beat it so I can clear my plate to play Battlefield with my coworkers and whomever else is down here.

Man they have some pretty good t-shirts, <snipped>

Yeah, I just focused on the Zero Punctuation shirts and then realized after I purchased them they had a whole lot of kick ass shirts, which I would have gotten more since shipping is less that way. I probably could have contacted someone, but I just did not want to go through it all. I will definitely be ordering from them in the future.

People need to realise that Yahtzee will say what he thinks. He cares very little for what the general public and more so fanboys think!

You only need look at the reaction and backlash he got to his SSBM review. I can see the same sort of thing happening with this MGS4 review.

While I don't agree with a lot of what is being said it's funny anyway.

However IMHO MGS4 is not the best game ever. It would be in my top 10 but not top 5.

FF7 is my all time great if anyone cares.

    • Microsoft admits one of the most crucial Outlook features is currently broken by Sayan Sen Microsoft is making some decent progress when it comes to Windows 11. Recently we have confirmed reports of some rather useful improvements landing in the next version of the OS, 26H2, wherein GPU driver TDR crashes may finally be fixed, plus the company is also allowing users to disable web content on the Search. On the Outlook front though things have not been so rosy. Last month in May we reported several problems affecting basic functionalities on the app. These included a problem where documents would open blank or corrupt themselves. Following that, Quick Steps, a very useful feature, would no longer work correctly, and finally, Microsoft acknowledged a problem wherein images would fail to load up properly inside the email. Microsoft had resolved those bugs later and almost exactly a month after we reported on them, the company has now admitted a new similarly basic issue, this time on Macs. Users recently started noticing that Outlook would no longer display email threads properly as the original message itself was not displayed. An affected user Tsoumpas, C (ngmb) nicely described the problem in a forum post they made on Microsoft's site. They wrote: "Description of the issue: After updating Outlook for Mac [Version 16.110 (26061317)] on 18/6/2026, replying to any email no longer includes the original message in the reply window. Prior to the update, replies correctly contained the original email text below my response. Expected behavior: The original message should be included in the reply, as in previous Outlook versions and according to the configured reply settings. Actual behavior: The reply window contains only a blank composition area (or only my response), with none of the original email text included." Obviously this must be a highly frustrating for users as noted by several in that thread. The post, at the time of writing, has also been upvoted by more than 40 users indicating that is a fairly widespread bug. Thankfully Microsoft seems to have acknowledged the problem right around that time as it opened a new issue on its official website. In the support article, the company recommends switching to Outlook for Mac from the legacy app, where the problem appears to be happening.
