ICQ locking alternative clients out?

msn its so bloated, crappy and limited compared to ICQ, a only reason that msn beat ICQ was the integration with windows and hotmail.

Other than that as i said msn copy many of ICQ features, but still we dont have a easy share folder and resume file transfer like ICQ did.

The only time I've ever used ICQ is at my old job, apparently, being an "IT" firm, using a protocol that hardly anybody in the UK uses makes you look cool :rolleyes:

However, whilst I was using it, the protocol itself is very nice, shame it's not so big here in the UK.

Why? I don't see any advantages of the other proprietary IM protocols.

Me and my friends just skipped all of them an moved over to Jabber/XAMPP.

But no one even mentioned MSN, AIM, YI, ...

Id love to switch to something other than MSN but Im with whatever protocal/IM that has the most of users or most of my friends

ICQ is 12 years old, even AOL is 11 years old, and MSN is 9 years old.

Seriously, you germans need to move on :D

Then you should ask AOL to just discontinue ICQ.

Since ICQ is still fully actively developed, updated, and supported by AOL, there's no reason why people shouldn't use it. It will only die when AOL pulls the plug on it.

Which silence? Do you really know Jabber? Maybe most of you allready have an Jabber account and don't know it: Gmail for example.

Most of my friends use Jabber (together with OTR-encryption) now (besides ICQ/OSCAR).

Oh, so I can speak to my friends and family which uses gmail and only when theyre accessing their mail through the webinterface..

Sounds awesome :unsure:

Unless they switch to a Jabber based IM - which is probably not gonna happen anytime soon

in a future we need an Unified IM protocol, that make it easier for everyone to communicate to others, everyone use email because they communicate pretty much but IM its stuck in AIM and MSN and both featureless, bloated and not good for powerusers.

IM really need to evolve, so far no IM beat ICQ in feature at least and its one of the oldest...

Uh, now they have to install a MSN or ICQ (or whatever) client. So what's the difference there?

BTW: You can use other protocols via Jabber-Transports. So you only have to login in Jabber and you are only in ICQ, MSN, ... also.

I think by silence he means no VoIP. AFAIK Google Talk implements their own protocol for VoIP.

:laugh: The protocol you are talking about is called Jabber. So the future is here...

XMPP is great, but it's not the panacea for all IM needs. For example, audio and video messaging.

The extension for VOIP ist called Jingle respectively Jingle Audio.

Jabbin (based on PSI) got it allready. Others maybe too.

      And here goes the "Won't someone think of the children" brigade. Get stuffed mate. This has NOTHING to do with making the internet safe. It's about tracking adults, spying on your online activity, and sending the boys around when they don't like something you post. Also, again, parliament have voted TWICE against this, and Starmer is going ahead anyway. THAT is anti-democratic bullsh**. They will use this law to track you, they will use this law to control you, and they will use this law to punish you if they don't like what you do, even if it's legal. And your data?
