[O2 UK] Assisted GPS - How much will it cost?

Recommended Posts

I'm on O2 (600mins 500txts) tarriff (?35/month). Does anyone know how much it will cost me to use the Assisted GPS feature on my N82? I've tried asking O2 but the CS don't have a clue what I'm talking about!

Do you have any sort of data usage inclusive with your tariff?

Huleboeren - You only pay, if the software on the phone has to download the maps from the net. The nokia phones don't seem to come with map's installed. In other words, it works like google maps.

If you load on the maps, then there is nothing else to pay.

You get 1 MB data. I believe each lock using AGPS uses a few KB, so it's not too much.

GPS costs nothing.

Just make sure you load UK maps onto a memory card or you may end up running a bill into several hundred ? in 3G/Edge costs. Nokia has a map loader software package on their website which you can use.

Assisted GPS (AGPS) uses the metwork to help lock onto the satellies, which uses data.

They charge for GPS usage:s:s

I thought you just bought the GPS device or maps and that was it - a one time fee

You buy the device (N82, N95 etc.) and put the maps on the phone.

You can then lock on to the satellites using either Bluetooth GPS (external), Assisted GPS (uses network - uses data), Integrated GPS (free but can take a minute or two to lock) and Network based (I am not too sure how similar this is to AGPS) or a combination of them all.

You can then find your position on the map and check out any local Places Of Interest (POIs) that are stored on the device but it costs more to use the extra services (including voice drive/walk navigation, guides, traffic info. etc.).

Nokia don't ship some of their devices with the maps pre-installed as many people will not use them and they take up a lot of memory on the phone. They're free to download and sometimes come on discs that are included with the device. Also, many providers (in the UK anyway) include free memory cards with their contracts with the maps pre-installed.

I don't think it gets sent over 3G/Edge. My phone certainly doesn't connect when using a-gps so I can only assume it's just reading information from the cell tower itself and signal strength to guess at an approximate location to the tower. Were talking so little data it'd make no difference anyway.

edit: Looks like an assistance server is not actually required. (or so it seems. The article I looked up was a little unclear) *shrugs*

Can I suggest the ?7.50 unlimited web bolt-on though?

Yeah, I just called up O2 and they said because I'm on the ?35/month package, I get the Unlimited Web bolt-on for free. So, result there.

I pay ?35 per month, no idea about any 'unlimited Web bolt-on' for me!

I actually pay ?25/month. My contract is ?35/month but I've got ?10 discount for the duration of my 18 month contract. (Don't you just love O2 Customer Retentions)

Anyway, when I signed up, they said as part of the package you get 1 free unlimited bolt-on. So I chose Unlimited Anytime O2 to O2 calls, in addition to my Anytime cross network 600 mins. I called them up again yesterday after having been with them for 4 months or so and told them I wanted to change the bolt-on as I don't use up my 600 mins let alone my unlimited O2 calls and I wanna change it to the unlimited web bolt-on. The advisor told me that I actually had 2, unlimited O2 calls and first 100Mb free bolt-on but I got this changed then she gave me Unlimited Web bolt-on and told me I can keep the unlimited O2 calls too. Cool service there!

AGPS does cost, but not much. It helps you lock on quicker but it's optional.
aGPS does download data to the phone, and not via the GPS chip. However, I do not believe that it forms part of your data usage.

Also, it SHOULD be minimal.

Can you speculate on how many kilobytes/megabytes?:pp

1megabyte is 1.8$ or so with my carrier

aGPS does NOT use data. People do not seem to understand what aGPS is! It is a NORMAL GPS RECEIVER but with software that allows it to ALSO use information from the cell towers to get a lock faster! It doesn't cost ANYTHING and can run as a normal GPS if you don't have cell service.
