Crafting has been known about for ages (I found out right after I culled my backpack from 50 items to 12 or whatever >:( )

But, it's good to finally see it come out in an update, although now it looks like you'll have to find blueprints or some crap -_-

It would really suck if the chances of finding a blue print were the same as a hat.

Yes, we have suspected some type of crafting system to come, Robin even stated in the past that dupes will be useful in the future, but there has never been anything concrete about the crafting system until now. I may be wrong, and please do point out some sources if I am, but this is the first confirmed info we have about a crafting system.

I doubt blueprints will be dropped:

Blueprints—some of which you’ll get right off the bat, others of which you’ll have to puzzle out on your own—will tell you which ingredients you’ll need to combine to make different items.

To me, that means you can attempt to craft current items into new items. Remember D2's horadric cube? Something like that, items will either simply be used up if its an invalid recipe (deleted, basically) or you will get a notification that its not a valid recipe. We already know one recipe, 3 primary weapons which creates scrap metal. There will probably be a recipe to use that scrap metal + some other items (lets say medic unlocks) to make a medic hat or something along those lines. Doing so will likely add the recipe to your menu, so you could, if you wanted to later, re-craft the same item. Why would you want to do this? Who knows, maybe they plan on adding random weapon stats later? Or maybe its for trading later? The ability to create a highly-wanted hat out of duplicate items which you can then take and trade for some other hats or something?

We do not have specifics for it yet, but there is no indication that even hints at blueprints being random drops.

Also, another small quote:

If you’re super clever, you’ll even be able to craft new items before others can earn them the old fashioned way.

That goes even farther, by hinting there is something a player can directly do to influence what items they get. It may be pure luck of finding the right combination to make one of the new soldier/demo items before anyone else gets them, but I doubt you have to wait on that blueprint to drop, otherwise it would probably say "If you're super lucky", instead of clever.

After I applied the most recent Steam update, now TF2 won't start. It's stuck in the "validating game files" loop.

edit: deleting the game's local files and restoring from a backup fixed it.

It was pointed out on another forum I visit that the crafting image shows a shovel as an unlocked weapon.

I doubt it, developers tend to have the standard TF2 items in their backpacks. Its possible its just the default soldier shovel and they forgot to move it out of the way for the screenshot.

Not saying it cannot be an unlock, but as far as we know, theres equal chances its just the default shovel.

The latest page for the Saxton Hale comic says "... highly experimental new ordinance"

Could it be a new ammo type (for the winner Soldier)?

Possibly, but I am thinking of "highly experimental" meaning new, and "ordinance" referring to explosive ordinance which essentially can refer to any type of explosive. So while it could refer to the soldiers 4th unlock, I am willing to bet it is simply referring to the soldier and demos new unlocks.

EDIT: Hopefully they will release at least the first set of weapons today, that is unless they have yet another surprise (which ironically wouldn't surprise me) in store for today, leaving the weapons for Mon, Tues, and Weds. with the winner and surprise weapon reveal + release on Thursday. That is of course assuming they update us again today, which they probably will as yesterdays update was a surprise to everyone (they probably have the pages done, and just an automated system updating the proper pages yesterday and again today).

EDIT: Looking at the main war page though, there are only 4 days left. So they are either going to leave us hanging today, or they are going to update us today and have to war end on a new page all together on Thursday (different page than they have been using).

I think the 4th weapon will be hand grenades.

I doubt it, the TF2 team has been very adamant in the past that one of the goals of TF2 was to remove things that left you wondering who or what killed you, one of those things being grenades. While it is possible they have changed their stance, I do not think they would so quickly jump at the chance to give a single class grenades that go against one of their preliminary design goals of TF2.

As special Valve weapons yes, which I doubt they will release, so why would they include one in the screenshot?

By accident?

I mean yes, it could possibly be a new shovel for the soldier, but look at Robins backpack, it has many default weapons in his backpack which normal users wouldn't have. Its just as logical to think its just the normal shovel, than it is to think its the soldier melee unlock.

Also, no melee unlocks to day have had a look so similar to the normal weapon that it could be confused with it. Axtinguisher, KGB, Ubersaw, Sandman, they have all had unique looks compared to the original and easily able to tell them apart from the original. Sure there have been a few basically re-skinned weapons, like Natascha, Backburner and FaN that are difficult to tell apart at a distance, but not once has that happened with melee weapons.

Either way, until they reveal the soldier melee unlock its all speculation, there is nothing that hints at it being his new unlock and nothing that hints at it being the default shovel. For all we know the soldier isn't even getting a melee unlock (neither the sniper or spy got a melee unlock, soldier and demo might not either).

Or alternatively, it could be part of the crafting system, there have been a few sightings of Valve employees with the generic weapons listed as Uncommon/Rare etc, so via crafting it could be the variable stat weapons Valve have been planning for a long time.

    • If someone chooses to continue using SB and therefore goes through the manual intervention in the thread, afterwards the BSOD problem is gone. Whether they then re-enable the task doesn't matter, they're done, though on such machines it might pay to keep it disabled in case the next update (if there is a next) causes the same problem. OTOH, if someone disables SB in the BIOS, the problem is also gone. Incidentally, I noticed that this task exists even on machines that don't support SB. It's just installed across the board...and runs. Doing what on such machines is a little hazy.
