Well, the upside is that I've got close to 3 refined metals; I can craft pretty much all the new weapons.

The downside is there's tons of players that would be finally fed up of the direction Valve is taking TF2 in. I mean as it stands, some of the hats cost more than the damn game itself.

I saw an article on Kotaku that showed some of the prices and you're right. It's outrageous. Unless you seriously have money to burn, no one in their right mind should spend money on hats.

Exactly. Also, if community contributors get a portion of money for their creations, then everyone will just create hats from now on, and no (or far less) new weapons due to the higher cost for hats.

Before it didn't matter as people were contributing just for the sake of contributing.

If the prices were cheap then what would be the point of item drops, crafting, and trading? There are blueprints for almost every weapon and Valve will give us blueprints for the new hats soon. Items you buy cant be traded or crafted also so you cant buy a lot of the 0.49 items to craft to try to get the more expensive items for cheap. If Valve wants to take advantage of people who want it now and want to spend their money on items they can get for free then more power to them.

Except for the fact they're ignorant to the fact that you can still win the hats and other stuff the old way too.

I guess it's too difficult of a concept for them to grasp.

And this makes me smile:

The Gatsby is currently the rarest hat in the game (excluding the special edition hats awarded to the three winners of the Propaganda Contest), with less than 2 percent of sampled players possessing it, according to tf2stats.net.

I traded a Vintage Ye Old Baker Boy for one today..

Considering I make the Medic my main class..

I'm grateful for all the fantastic updates Valve put out for free, but whilst I understand they want to make some money out of it, charging ?11.99 for hat is not the way to do it.

Hopefully they'll realise this when the number of sales of the new items.

[conspiracy theory]If they wanted to, they could also make the drop system less likely to drop the new items / hats, in an attempt to generate some sales[/conspiracy theory]

what valve have done it totally wrong, personally i think that charging for new items is totally bad and unfair, its kinda put me off playing it now, even thought i aint touched it in months lol

They still drop normally, and for everything Valve has given to you for free you're opposed to paying a little bit back to them?

Nope, no Ushanka for me, I haven't been playing as much as I'd like to have been lately.

I could manage to part with mine, if you have a Vintage Fedora for it.

What would you want for your Vintage Troublemaker's Tossle Cap? I could trade you a spare Vintage Brigand Helm so you could trade that to ViZioN, that way you don't have to trade him your only (and currently equipped) Brigand Helm.

personally i think that charging for new items is totally bad and unfair,

None of the "OMG WTF how dare they charge us!" whiners online have realised that they had no choice if they was going to implement the item trading. A black market of items for sale would have spring up over night, along with all the drama and ripoffs that causes. Adding their own store pretty much kills that.

and seriously, come on guys. The game has been out since late 2007 and it's STILL being updated. Those of you who have owned it since that time have paid NOTHING for the additional content they have added, whereas other companies would have either dropped the game after 6 months or forced you to pay for DLC and split the playerbase. No game other than an MMO which requires monthly payment has ever been supported with new content for so long.

Given that the game is aging now and no doubt has a smaller playerbase regardless of the previous free content I don't think it's too much of a problem for them to want to get a return to justify the manpower needed to support the game in it's waning years. Again the alternative is that they just drop the game, which would no doubt cause more whining.

My thoughts exactly, but the prices are kind of insane but I guess they might adjust them in the future.

Well you can still get all the items the same way as before... This just allows people to skip that and buy them all. I don't see a huge problem. The only problem I see if the bonus for people with the whole set.

They are fixing that, no clue when, possibly next week, but there has been confirmation from Valve (Robin I think, to be more specific) that they are going to make the set hats craftable.

Hopefully they'll just kill the set bonuses requiring the hat full stop. I like the idea of certain loadout-sets giving small bonuses, but the hat requirement kills the whole "User expression/customisation" idea of hats in the first place in my opinion.

Doesn't help that I like none of the Polypack hats as is. :(

In other news, has anyone heard about the unknown items dropping? A friend of mine got a hat (judging by the level) with a Item-index of 216; Placing it between the Pyro and Scout Polypacks. There's another two gaps in the index count between 216 and the Scout pack too.

    • Yeah, this is absolutely nothing new and EA have done it before. Burnout Paradise, released in 2008, had dynamic advertising billboards that were updated via the internet and targeted people based on location and what EA knew about them from their profile. It was particularly notable for the fact that the Obama presidential campaign ran ads in the game, in an attempt to reach a younger audience who didn't watch broadcast TV any more. It was by no means the first though. Battlefield 2142 from 2006 had the same thing. In fact, Neowin wrote a story about it back then. https://www.neowin.net/news/ba...-in-game-ads-clarification/
    • This is obviously aimed at the education where Apple has lost so much ground to Chromebooks in the last few years, but unless they come up with a comparable management system for education why would anyone switch back?
    • Here's how we arrived at that claim: Note that this is just Play Store downloads. The app is also available on the Galaxy App Store
    • Google Play states the app had more than 50 million downloads. What other metric do you suggest should be used?
    • MSN defined our generation in some ways, kind of like Snapchat and TikTok have done for future generations. I have great memories of the MSN era in the late 90s / early 2000s. In the UK everyone seemed to come home from School and go on MSN for the evening. We didn't really have mobile phones then, so other than going and knocking on your friends door it was a totally new way of interacting with people. I also loved how I could talk to people I’d met playing online games from around the world. Inviting people to NetMeeting and messing about with the shared white board and webcams was pretty fun, even if webcams only ran at a couple of fps over dial-up. All the random things you could do with MsgPlus! were really fun - I suspect that made a few people jump with /shello randomly blasting Mr Hankey out their speakers! Maybe I’m just nostalgic, however I do feel the internet and computers were more fun back then.
