Hey all,

I've been wanting to change my Anti-Virus for a long time now, and am wondering whether I should go for NOD32 and Kaspersky?

I'm currently using AVG Free, and am pretty much satisfied with it, but want to go in for more security by purchasing a full version of either. I've been doing a bit of research online about whether I should go for NOD32 or Kaspersky, and after a lot of looking around on different forums and statistics, I'm still undecided about the same.

People claim NOD32 as a light/fast and effective anti-virus, while Kaspersky boasts about its higher detection and removal rate. Some figures show that NOD32 has better detection rate. Seriously confusing.

I looked up the NeoWin 2008 Best Antivirus statistics and NOD32 wins hands down, with 400+ votes while Kaspersky has 150+.

It would be much appreciated if anyone could help me make the right choice. My main priority is to have maximum detection and removal rate, looking for total security.

Btw, how does bitdefender compare to them?

I used kaspersky 7 before on vista, and it slowed down my laptop. My laptop isnt anything great, an old 1.66 GHz Core duo (the first generation T2300). So, it really felt slow. I have 2GB of ram. I tried NOD32 and it worked really well, and it doesnt even feel like there's an antivirus installed! I dont care how much RAM it takes, just not CPU cycles. So, finally I purchased NOD32 with a student discount. Very good, and I would recommend it to anybody.

Also, NOD32 has never failed to detect viruses, except that 1 month ago (i think), it flagged Acrobat, Nero as "Unknown Trojan". It was a false positive, but because i deleted the files, i had to reinstall Acrobat and Nero. A fix was later posted on NOD's website later.

I have used both on my PC's. Lately I have found Kaspersky AV 2009 to impact on Windows performance and even be the cause of BSOD's, which has really disappointed me.

Overall I find NOD32 (3.0) lighter, and less likely to cause problems. NOD32 also an has excellent track record with 50 VB passes (Y)

I'm using Kaspersky for abt 5 years alrdy and nvr encountered any prob. Btw, which version of KAV 2009 are you using? 8.0.0.357 (a.b)? if you are using the final version + non modified /cracked one, i think it should not cause any prob.

I admit kaspersky is taking more resources than NOD32. But for the security n protection, kaspersky is better :), go for Kaspersky Internet Security rather than Kaspersky Anvitirus.

If u r normal user, seldom download files from torrent or rapidshare, u can go for NOD32 for the better performance.

If u r the advanced user who always download files from torrent, rapidshare or visit xxx or hacking website, u better use Kaspersky for the better protection :). If u can customize KIS settings such as registry , u can see tt KIS is more powerful :)

I am (was) an reseller for nod32, version 2.7 was amazing but the new versions of 3 have been terrible when used in a network environment. it has caused so much trouble that I will no longer sell it to my customers.

I am now looking at kaspersky toreplace it.

NOD32 (3.0) has been working quite well for me in a home environment. It wasn't a perfect product when it first was released but it's good now.

^^ yup KIS 7 is much better, m still using KIS 7 :). I couldnt find some functions and it couldnt solve IP to Hostname :(

I've always been a big fan of Kaspersky and would recommend that. Over the weekend i had to sort out my cousin's computer who managed to get some spyware and a virus installed. He had Nod32 on his system so i did a scan and it found the virus but it wouldn't remove it. I downloaded KAV in the end which managed to get rid of it.

It is awesome software, and not nearly talked about enough, and the anti virus portion is free, go try it.

i would try threatfire and it is free and offers realtime behavior protection and you can run a manual antivirus scan with it,i found with nod it doesent find much but kaspersky works better at finding things but with kaspersky an older game i play it kaspersky causes it to hang a bit but nod has no problem and you could try the free kaspersky removal tool that dexter suggested,if your very careful with what you do you dont need real time av protection but a behavior based one should do.

but i wish they make x64 bit installer so i can run it on my 64bit system

I just switched from nod32 to avira antivir just because of the higher detection removal rate of viruses, i did a full system scan with both antivirus scanners last week and nod32 missed a couple, avira managed to catch the ones nod32 missed, so thats what made me switch...and nod32 has been a favorite of mine for a very long time....but avira is just superior imho....i also customized avira to set updates to invisible and I've got the update nag screen hidden...so everything runs silently in the background... anyways the free version fits me perfectly...and i recommend it....ive also installed it on 5 computers this week...so im telling everyone i know about this wonderful free antivirus..n if you dont like the red little umbrella icon you can click on customize notification icons and set it to hide ;)

The ultimate $64,000 av question.

It's totally a personal preference here. I prefer KAV.

That Antivir is crap!! Been playing with a free av from Comodo, http://antivirus.comodo.com/. Seems alright and updates VERY fast, unlike Antivir. Also able to disable everything including real time, which I dislike, but still able to right click and scan without opening the whole program.

That test is testing for proactive testing, how well it can detect new malware without signature updates, not total detection.

Avira is probably the current top in my opinion with good heuristics and signature detection. However, it does seem to be a little more likely to have false-positives than most.

Should be fine with any of the top AVs, differences aren't that big in reality.

:laugh: Right. Sorry *wipes tears* :laugh: So a product with great detection and amazing Proactive and On-Demand detection is Crap?

NOD32 has less resource usage than KAV and rocks at all...

(However, a resident virus guard is useless, it's enough to check finished downloads...)

NOD32 (3.0) also doesn't cause BSOD's that are blamed on KAV/KIS 2009, all the while Kaspersky denies it's their problem or is clueless to resolve.

Fair enough, I'll be honest I've never really needed to use it. I can't say I've had too many infected files that've needed cleaning before.

mm, when i tried ESS i only had option of daily updates, do they actually have hourly ones?

Haha, k, well maybe they are daily, but that's a good enough job in my books. It's fast, and it updates silently without bothering me, so I like it.

Worst was when I started getting BSOD's, it has NEVER...i say NEVER happened before. For the first time I got BSOD, I ignored it, the 2nd time I got it, I knew it must've been Avira causing them. I uninstalled it and now my system is running perfectly fine.

Seems like I'll have to settle for Kaspersky or NOD32. Will post an update as soon as I get one.

I don't think I have ever seen Avira cause BSOD, more likely it's a driver or hardware fault.
