The new iPhone 3G combines all the revolutionary features of iPhone plus 3G networking that is twice as fast, built-in GPS for expanded location-based mobile services, and iPhone 2.0 software which includes support for Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync and runs over 800 third party applications available through the new App Store. CUPERTINO, California?July 14, 2008?Apple? today announced that iPhone? and iPod? touch users have already downloaded more than 10 million applications from its groundbreaking new App Store since its launch late last week. Developers have created a wide array of innovative mobile applications ranging from games to location-based social networking to medical applications to enterprise productivity tools. Users can wirelessly download applications directly onto their iPhone or iPod touch and start using them immediately. More than 800 native applications are now available on the App Store, with more than 200 offered for free and more than 90 percent priced at less than $10.

"The App Store is a grand slam, with a staggering 10 million applications downloaded in just three days," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO. "Developers have created some extraordinary applications, and the App Store can wirelessly deliver them to every iPhone and iPod touch user instantly."

Many of these amazing new applications take advantage of iPhone's large display, Multi-Touch? user interface, fast hardware-accelerated 3D graphics, built-in accelerometer and location-based technology to bring far more powerful applications to the mobile arena than ever before.

The App Store on iPhone works over cellular networks and Wi-Fi, which means it is accessible from just about anywhere, so users can purchase and download applications wirelessly and start using them instantly. Applications are free or charged to the user's iTunes? account and the App Store notifies the user when updates are available for their apps. The App Store is also available in iTunes (www.itunes.com) running on a Mac? or PC, which syncs applications to the iPhone or iPod touch using a USB cable.

Good for them but I think I'm going to keep my first iPhone. 3G iPhone is not available in Puerto Rico (seems that Apple hates PR) and I'm happy with the current plan I have. $35 for unlimited data and 200 sms, those are $15 I can spend in gas :p

It was a game-changer from day 1.

It's the next iPod.

Congrats to Apple, but this comes as no surprise. It's good to know that Apple actually gives a damn about users and how they experience their products on a daily basis, from apps to the interface. That's certainly saying a helluva lot more than I can for other tech companies that just don't "get it."

I'm getting mine ASAP, or as soon as Rogers can get me set up.

Did Canada finally get some good tariffs or are they still disproportionately expensive? UK got some fairly reasonable deals with iPhone 3G tariffs..

Price is a bit more reasonable, but you still need to get a data plan with it.

The Rogers website has all the info. I can live with it, though.

Exactly.

I mean, for Rogers, it took a lot of complaints till they finally put out a 'reasonable' data plan of 6GB for $30, which still does not beat AT&T's unlimited.

I must say, congrats to Apple for the 3G iPhone's success.

It's a shame that I can't get one even if I want to. Movistar in spain offers better prices for new customers or customers from another companies. I would have to break my current contract first, losing my number and all. And the prices are a total joke, because they force their data plan on everybody, which is 15?. I dont find this fact all that outrageous, if it wasn't for the fact that on top of that, you have a minimum to spend on voice calls. Even though you CAN pay around 9 euro as the minimum voice calls, people usually spend around 25. Making it 40 euro (ex VAT) a month for a phone that costed 250 euro.

For around or less than 30 euro a month you can get the 8gb one for 130-150 euro. In spain for that amount you have to pay 250.

If I were an apple fanboy I would be outraged that I have to deal with the evil telcos to get an awesome product like the iphone. I can't even get in spain because there's no point in engaging in a 24-month contract when I'm going to spend the next 9 months abroad. And since I have no guarantees of being able to use the SIM from another official iphone carrier, that would be 9 months of contract gone to waste.

It's sad. Apple should sell unlocked iphones worldwide even at scandalously high prices.

Exactly.

6gb is a lot. A lot. In spain the most you can have is 1GB for 25 euro.

I still think Canada has disproportioned prices, as in way too high.

And I've never had a cellphone but apparently Rogers' network is really bad... but Bell & Telus too, so what should we expect?

The competition is absent in Canada in the mobile sector. We just blow and it's gonna take a good 3 years at least before we can catch up.

    • Nvidia GeForce NOW gains support for Dark Scrolls, Empulse, and more by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe The final update of June for Nvidia's cloud gaming service GeForce NOW is now available, and it is touting support for six more games. The company is also drawing subscriber attention towards the summer sales kicking off across stores, so they can stock up on more cloud-supported titles. Of course, the Steam Summer Sale is the biggest promotion, which is kicking off later today. "Supported Steam games can be streamed across devices with GeForce NOW, making it easy to buy a game once, keep progress synced and pick up where the gameplay left off on PCs, Macs, handheld devices, phones, TVs and more," says the company. "In other words, the Steam Summer Sale brings the deals; GeForce NOW adds the flexibility." Don't forget that the GeForce NOW summer sale is still active as well. This limited-time offer drops the 12-month Performance membership from $99.99 to $64.99, saving members $35. At the same time, the 12-month Ultimate membership is currently going for $129.99, dropping the price by $70 from the original $199.99. Here are the games joining GeForce NOW's supported list this week: Dark Scrolls (New release on Steam, available June 22) SAND: Raiders of Sophie (New release on Steam, available June 22) Deer & Boy (New release on Steam, available June 23) EMPULSE (New release on Steam, available June 24) The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales (Steam) FATAL FURY: City of the Wolves (Steam) With the June expansions coming to an end, Nvidia should be announcing its July GeForce NOW plans next week. Keep in mind that, unlike subscription services like Game Pass or EA Play, a copy of a game must be owned by the GeForce NOW member (or at least have a license via PC Game Pass) to start playing via Nvidia's cloud servers. There is also a limit to how many hours subscribers can use the service per month.
