Where the Heck is 1UP's Little Big Planet Review?

Why we haven't reviewed it yet -- and when you can look forward to seeing it!

Those among you who are eager to get your hands on Little Big Planet may have noticed a few early reviews hitting the Web over the past couple of days. So where's 1UP's review?

Well, we're waiting until we can check out a finished retail copy of the game. While our reviewer has spent plenty of time with both the beta and a near-final reviewable version, neither of those builds feature an online-multiplayer component that's reflective of the final game. We definitely aren't comfortable basing an opinion off the beta (due to numerous multiplayer connectivity problems...and, ya know, because it's a beta), we need to see how the final game's community features (such as how it sorts and categorizes custom levels) fare, and Sony doesn't currently have any early multiplayer servers set up for reviewers. So, the short answer is "stay tuned" -- our authoritative LBP review is coming and should be posted no later than the game's October 21 release date. All in good time!

Pretty decent move actually, the online component in retail is only going to be better than the beta's.

Current reviews are based on retail SP/Creation mode, but journalists/reviewers had to of played the beta to comment on online.

Looks like the GS review will be >= 9

Epic Fail: Games that will Probably Suck

LittleBigPlanet (releases Fall 2008)

To hear some journalists talk, Sony's LittleBigPlanet will become the reason to purchase the system. We say, "Hold on to your cash." Despite the cute characters, this is nothing more than a glorified version of PowerPoint fueled by gamers hoping to make their own "presentations". Talented players will create interesting and perhaps fun designs. Everyone else will make horrible levels. If you could design several stages, string them together and make your own platform game, that'd be cool, but for now, all we foresee is tons of crap content.

Now :p

Buy LittleBigPlanet or we'll kick you in your Sackboy.

Until recently, we had trouble enjoying Sony's ambitious PlayStation 3 video game, LittleBigPlanet. Its mascot, the adorable Sackboy, was shoved down our throats, and the level editor failed to thrill. Paying a company $59.99 to design their game made no sense, and we'd much rather play God of War over a crude homage, at least until a casual play session turned into an all day's romp through colorful worlds teeming with cute animals, twisted creations and catchy music. Now our heads are full of grinning Sackboys, previously completed levels and our own designs. We're hooked.

so, AB... you need to convince me to go right out and buy this next week w/ no hesitation.

I have a lot of faith that it would be a solid purchase, but i just wasnt THAT impressed w/ the beta... it was like "meh, it's fun to jump around, but what else?"

surely the last 71 pages can convince you no ? ;)

Well I've gone through what must be more than half of the game - I'm probably not too far from the end.

Hands down without a doubt one of the best platformers since the days of Sonic/Mario - 2D ones that is. **** 3D Sonic, and Mario 64/Galaxy exceptions since they are awesome 3D games.

Some of the level design is just brilliant.

Just playing through, you don't just think "oh wow, awesome level", you constantly think "oh wow, awesome level, and **** I/someone else can make this 1:1 in the editor".

The game has a storyline, but no, it's not winning any oscars  However it's funny and charming.

The amount of collectables per level is crazy - You WILL be replaying levels to get everything, plus every level has extra awards for "aceing" them (not dieing).

And finally, co-op level playing is gonna be a blast with the more complicated levels than those in the beta. A lot of levels require 2 people to unlock some collectables, a few 3 & 4 people.

Music and art direction are really good throughout as well.

It's a AAA title, no doubts, "everyone" with a PS3 should and must own it.

I say "everyone" because at heart, if you don't like platformers, you'll probably say no to this regardless. Unless you're a creative person?

Aside from good multiplayer games, like FPS', etc, this game is going to have some of the largest legs so far this gen from DLC and user creation, no doubts.

From me, I can say definitely GOTY contender for my list - Would be surprised if it doesn't win, but the years not finished, only fair to judge all the games I play.

It's knocked MGS4 away from my GOTY - Not on story lol, but just from the sheer experience of something fresh and new.

Media Molecule kick ass

But it might be a pre-order :o

One of the gold trophies

Play - Complete all story levels without dying, with the exception of those levels that only end when you die

Corris/KoL, try your hardest LOL

Oh man, I need to try and find this somehow. Has anyone in the states gotten it early, and if so, where?

Also, IGN gave it a 9.5 - Incredible, saying it is a must have even without the level creation tools. Cannot wait, for real.

    • I think every American should have a course in a 'dry sense of humour' at school; and perhaps 'using sarcasm in jest' oh, and also 'the use or irony in humour'. Slapstick is just about all Americans can understand. It's a pity, as this is the most basic of humour, that requires no thought at all. It's hilarious to watch a whole room collapse with laughter while yanks sit scratching their heads...
    • What they really need to do is automatically spell "loses" and "lose" correctly since nobody seems to know how to anymore. Then they blame spellcheck/autocomplete and don't realize autocomplete is just filling in the word for them automatically so it was misspelled in the first place.
    • If someone chooses to continue using SB and therefore goes through the manual intervention in the thread, afterwards the BSOD problem is gone. Whether they then re-enable the task doesn't matter, they're done, though on such machines it might pay to keep it disabled in case the next update (if there is a next) causes the same problem. OTOH, if someone disables SB in the BIOS, the problem is also gone. Incidentally, I noticed that this task exists even on machines that don't support SB. It's just installed across the board...and runs. Doing what on such machines is a little hazy.
