In-Home Server Setup

I am a student in college and data backup is an important topic I need to address. I currently have the Netgear SC101 network storage. I have it connected to my Netgear 54g v.6 wireless router and cable internet. What I am trying to do is be able to access the HD in the netgear SC101 from my dorm room at school. I have an old laptop with Windows XP pro on it now, I can put server edition 2003 or 2008 if needed for the application on it. How do I go about setting it all up so when I am at college in my dorm I can access any and all files on my network storage and be able to add/delete/edit files.

Unless you can vpn into the network the SC101 is setting on your pretty much out of luck.. That device is pretty much a POS.. it uses Z-san which you have to use netgears SCM utility to access the disks as though they are local to your machine.

I do not believe its possible to do over a internet type connection. It might work if you can vpn into your home network using say hamachi or something.

Or your other option is to remote control a machine on your home local network that has access to that device.

If you were looking to for a NAS that you could access from anywhere, you should of gotten one that supports FTP or HTTP interface to the files..

Can you return it and get something decent??

Why would you need to setup a server at your client location to access a NAS at a remote location???

What has this got to do with Winodws server?

It has nothing to do with server, other than him asking if putting that on his laptop would magically allow him to connect to it ;)

hehehe - its CRAP, return it and get yourself a real NAS that supports ftp/http access to your files.. This way you can use it from anywhere on the planet vs your local network ;)

What I would do is take a old PC and put freenas on it ;) As to an off the shelf already done -- can not give any personal exp recommendations.
