Compaq C762NR Notebook - No wake from "sleep"

Recommended Posts

A couple of times I have left my c762nr notebook running Vista Home Premium, unattended and it has put itself to sleep in some fashion and will not wake up.

What i find strange is that the power light is solid, not blinking like when it's typically sleeping, and there is no hard disk activity. It's as if the screen has shut off, but will not turn back on.

When this happens it's always on battery power. I have the power settings set to "BALANCED" and the screen is set to turn off in 5 minutes and the computer is set to go to sleep in 15 minutes.

I have the computer set to never hibernate.

I have never owned a vista machine and have only had this one for about 2 months, so I'm not sure if I am missing something or not.

Does anyone have some suggestions? Thank you

Try plugging it into an external monitor and leave it unattended, see if there is picture on the laptop screen or external monitor.

Try setting the screen to turn off in a longer period of time, and also the time to go to sleep.

This is just bizzare... It's like it goes into a state that it cant be awoken from...This last time it just did it, I hadn't been away from it for even 5 minutes and it went to like deep sleep. The power button stays solid, but there's nothing that I can do.

I've played with the settings in the past that you suggested and it didn't help. It's like the power management is completely ****ed. I want to like Vista, I'm actually warming up to it, but this isn't helping.

One other thing you should probably know is that this is not a factory install of Vista. I wiped the machine to get all the crapware off they had on it. I installed, using my Compaq OEM key, from a friend's Vista 32/64 OEM Disc that came with his new Gateway, and used all the Vista drivers from Compaq's website for this machine.

Any other suggestions?

P.S. I Pioneered putting XP onto this machine when it came out, and put together an entire tutorial, and driver pack for it that over 2000 people have downloaded, so I'd say I'm pretty familiar w/ the machine's hardware and so on, but this is boggling my mind. I got some more ram (up to 3gb) and decided to give vista a try.

Some hardware is notoriously twitchy with the Sleep feature. My machine wouldn't recover from sleeping pre-SP1, but it's been napping as it should ever since. If you haven't already updated, do it. If you have, I suggest searching Microsoft's KB for quickfixes. If that doesn't work, try contacting the manufacturer.

The OEM install I did includes SP1. I have all current updates for the OS as well.
