Classics for free

Well, the FTP server of Back2roots is also dead which means that we lost a great deal of Amiga software. The webmaster of Eager which used to be located at http://eager.back2roots.org/ has moved the site to http://eager.orgfree.com/ . Even the webmaster of Eager doesn't know why Back2roots is dead.

On the other hand, we also have World Of Classics which contains legal downloads of Amiga games/apps & it is located at http://www.marksplace.f9.co.uk/ , I know about this site for a long time but never mentioned it since we had BTTR, but since BTTR is dead, I am mentioning this site.

The FTP server of BTTR is accessable at ftp://129.241.210.40/ , you have to use the IP address since the DNS no longer works.

According to the forum post at http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=21994 , there was a message from Bobic (one of the people who worked on BTTR) about why it is gone.

I like to mention that site called Games That Weren't C64 which is located at http://www.gtw64.co.uk/ . This site deals with games which were supposed to be released for C64 but never were. This site contains demos, previews & in some games, the full unreleased game (with permission from the copyright authors).

I would also like to mention the site called Amiga Games That Weren't which is located at http://agtw.abime.net/ . This site deals with games which were supposed to be released for Amiga but never were. This site contains demos, previews & in some games, the full unreleased game (with permission from the copyright authors).

Last but not least, I like to mention that site called PC Games That Weren't which is located at http://pcgtw.retro-net.de/ . This site deals with games which were supposed to be released for PC but never were. This site contains demos, previews & in some games, the full unreleased game (with permission from the copyright authors).

Ah, so they still have the file on their server.. I was afraid Metropolis Software had discontinued offering the game.

I can't, however, find a way to this file from their homepage.. am I just blind?

Well, I'm going thru some of my old posts & unfortuntely, Metropolis Software has now removed Teen Agent from their server so http://www.metropolis-software.com/downloa...een-english.exe is no longer avaliable.

The website called The Unofficial DND Home Page which is located at http://members.tripod.com/~rancourt/default.htm deals with the old game called DND which was developed by Daniel Lawrence during the 1970's. DND is a game with ascii graphics & it is a dungeon crawl which predates Rogue by almost 10 yrs. The game DND comes from Dungeons & Dragons because this is the game which DND takes its inspiration from. The above site contains downloads of DND & the variants with permission from the copyright authors so the above page is legal. Download the games from the above page to play a classic game.

Sanctuary Software Studio released their old DOS shareware game called BACKLASH for free download. BACKLASH is a space combat game featuring rasterized 3D models and real-time simulation. This software was originally shareware then it went commerical & the company has now re-released the game for free download. You can get the game from http://www.sancsoft.com/galSoftware.asp .

3D Realms has done it again. They have released another one of their shareware prog's for free download. This time, they released the The Wolfenstein 3D Super Upgrades which was once sold as shareware by Apogee. The Wolfenstein 3D Super Upgrades is a boatload of extra levels for Wolf (over 800), a level editor, and a random level generator. The full registered version of Wolfenstein 3D is required to run this add-on. You can download this add-on from http://www.3drealms.com/news/2006/05/the_a..._legacy_20.html (near bottom of page).

Well, I have no new info to add but I got hooked up to broadband (one-way cable) yesterday & it is great. I was finally able to get some of the large games in this thread such as the Marathon games & Labyrinth of Time.

Now over this weekend, I will get onEscapee & Fish Fillets.

About 2 yrs. ago, I posted in this thread about the shareware game called Inner Worlds which was re-released as freeware by the original authors but the authors removed the game from their server. I posted this at:

https://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=65246&st=210

Well, the full version of Inner Worlds was posted at Dosgames so you can also download Inner Worlds from http://www.dosgames.com/g_side3.php .

However, it's still available over at FilePlanet, so I guess that means it's still freeware...

Well, it's good to know that there is still a site to download this game other than Gamehippo. I still have the game on my HDD so I don't need to download it but it's great to know that there are still sites which has this game for download.

Only the source code to Rise Of The Triad is freeware, the data files aren't freeware. So what this means is that you can download the source code to Rott & compile your own version, et al for free but you can't legally download the registered data files. To get the registered Rott game, you have to buy the game.

I haven't been to active in the thread as much as I used to but while checking Aminet, I just saw that another former shareware/commerical game was re-released as freeware by the copyright owner.

The game is called Full version: Enemy - Tempest of Violence. According to the readme at Aminet, this is an action adventure written by Andr? Wuethrich, originally released in 1997. There are 2 versions on Aminet, one is the German version while the second version is the English version.

To thoses who don't know, you can access Aminet at http://www.aminet.net/ .

Whether you're a fan of strategy games (of the realtime breed) or a run-off-the-mill FPS gamer, check this out:

"Savage - The Battle for Newerth" has been re-released for free! And this time, it's official! (Finally!) :p

Unfortunately only the Windows version is available at this time. There are also Linux and Mac versions but they are not currently linked on the download page so perhaps they're not officially freeware yet.

Enjoy!

This is a great source for free games: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_open_source_games :)

A VERY nice list but most games on that list don't really qualify for this thread. Most of those games were free from the start, only a few are previously commercial/shareware games gone freeware (which is the topic of this thread).

It's been mentioned a few times throughout this thread, and in fact was one of the main reasons this thread was even started in the first place. But thanks for reminding us. :)

In all fairness, Wikipedia does also have a page listing previously commercial/shareware games re-released as freeware.

However, the Wikipedia list is both incomplete (they lack several of Cinemaware's titles among other things) and somewhat inaccurate (MechCommander 1 and Gold is included on their list, but was actually never officially released as freeware the way it's sequel was. Apparently some fans just extrapolated that since MC2 was being released as open-source, MC1 was to be considered freeware as well - even though Microsoft never said so.).

Just an idea... but why don't you correct it if you know it is wrong?

I like to mention that there is another game which has been re-released for free download by the original author. The author's name is Antti Kuukka & he released the full registered version of his shareware RPG game called Helherron for free download. You can download the game for Windows & Linux at http://www2.lut.fi/~akuukka/helherron/main.htm .

This game is a top-down RPG & is very similar to the Ultima & Nahlakh games.

I'm slowly making progress in my list of game makers I want to contact for this little 'project'.

If anyone can help me get working email contact info for any of the following companies, I'd be grateful. ;)

Microprose (featuring Micro Value / Micro Style / Spectrum Holobyte)

Mindscape (featuring Capstone / The Software Toolworks)

Ocean (bought by Infogrames)

Titus (featuring Palace)

Psygnosis

THQ (featuring Rainbow Arts / Softgold)

GT Interactive (featuring Renegade)

As far as I can understand from their reply, Magnetic Fields may provide links to downloads from their homepage soon if everything checks out with their former publisher Gremlin. Magnetic Fields are responsible for awesome racing series Lotus Turbo Challenge and Supercars.

I've mailed Sales Curve ([email protected]) too, to ask them about releasing Silkworm, SWIV and Rodland among others, as well as contacting Silmarils ([email protected]).

I've also contacted neo Software (now called Rockstar Vienna, part of Rockstar) to ask them if they're willing to release some of the neo Classics on their homepage. Their email is [email protected] if anyone else wants to get in touch with them.

Psygnosis was acquired by Sony Computer Entertainment of America (SCEA) and is directly responsible for the WipeOut series (the first two of which were popular pack-in games with early PC 3D graphics cards) for the PC, original PlayStation and PS2.

This topic is now closed to further replies.

    • Microsoft making much needed change to Windows 11, 10 Patch Tuesday security updates by Sayan Sen Recently, Microsoft delivered its latest Defender patches for Windows 11 ISOs. These definitions are released from time to time alongside the general security updates available during Patch Tuesday. Speaking of Defender, the company has now announced another important change that affects how security updates are delivered to enterprise devices running Windows. According to a recent announcement, Microsoft Defender for Endpoint's endpoint detection and response (EDR) updates will no longer be bundled with the monthly Windows security updates or Patch Tuesdays. Instead the company is shifting delivery of these updates to Microsoft Update, bringing EDR servicing in line with several other Microsoft Defender components. If you recall, Microsoft last year moved PowerShell updates to Microsoft Update (MU) as well since it provides automatic updates for Microsoft products and services. Thus the move is intended to allow Microsoft to deliver EDR improvements and security enhancements independently of the OS's regular monthly update cycle; this should enable faster deployment of protection updates without requiring organizations to wait for the next Patch release. For those unfamiliar, Microsoft Defender for Endpoint's EDR capabilities are designed to help organizations detect, investigate, and respond to advanced threats across managed devices. Keeping these components updated is critical for maintaining protection against evolving attack techniques. The rollout has already began for Windows 10 devices in late May 2026 (last month) and Microsoft says it will gradually expand support to Windows 11 and the remaining supported Windows versions over the coming months. The company expects deployment across Windows 10 and Windows 11 to be completed by fall 2026 or around Q3 of this year. Once the transition is complete, EDR updates will be delivered through Microsoft Update using KB5005292, provided the required prerequisite updates have already been installed. Microsoft is also introducing a new Defender Update Service as part of the change. Following installation of the first update, devices will automatically create a new directory located at %ProgramData%\Microsoft\Microsoft Defender\Defender Update. Microsoft notes that restarts may occasionally be necessary in case of "rare" failure scenarios. For most organizations, the tech giant says no action will be required as long as Microsoft Update is already permitted within their update management strategy. Admins who rely on manually deployed update packages, however, will need to adjust their processes to ensure the new Defender update package is included. Microsoft also recommends reviewing internal documentation and notifying helpdesk and security operations teams about the updated delivery mechanism to avoid confusion during the transition. As a prerequisite, the tech giant notes that systems must be running Sense version 10.8798.25857.1000 or later and have one of the following Windows updates (or later) installed: Win11 24H2 KB5062660 (2025-07 Cumulative Update Preview) Win11 23H2 KB5062663 (2025-07 Cumulative Update Preview) Win11 22H2 KB5062663 (2025-07 Cumulative Update Preview) Win10 22H2 KB5062649 (2025-07 Cumulative Update Preview) Win10 1809 KB5063877 (2025-08 Cumulative Update) Server 2019 KB5063877 (2025-08 Cumulative Update) Server 2022 KB5063880 (2025-08 Cumulative Update) Server 2025 KB5063878 (2025-08 Cumulative Update) As always, organizations should verify that their update policies align with the new servicing approach before the broader rollout reaches all supported Windows platforms later this year. In case of major problems, the EDR update can be rolled back to the inbox version stored in %ProgramFiles%\\Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection (ATP) using: MpCmdRun.exe -RevertMde -Product Edr -ToVersion Inbox For those who have access to the Microsoft 365 Admin Center portal, you can view the message here under ID MC1381119.
    • My problem with these smart scopes is that IMO they're not really an entrance into astronomy, they're an entrance to looking at pretty(ish) pictures that you take by essentially pressing a button and letting the scope do the work. I still maintain that getting some binoculars or a solid dedicated telescope (which doesn't have to mean expensive) and actually spending time learning the night sky and using a telescope is a much better way to actually learn. But, granted, the learning curve is a bit steeper (as it tends to be).
    • I never played Crazy Taxi before, but this looks like a fun game!
    • The perception of Microsoft Edge is unfortunate as it's a world class browser. I'm not exaggerating when I say it's the best browser I've ever used with its feature set, speed, reliability and advanced security. Running the extension Ublock Origin is a must though to deal with advertising and trackers.
