That is one ass-kicking game! I remember playing that one on our 286. :)

Here is another update. About 2 yrs ago, I mentioned that Jeff Minter of Llamasoft released his games for free download years ago but his web site went down & I could only find an Internet archive link.

Well, Jeff was put most of his games for free download on his site. Goto http://www.llamasoft.co.uk/softography.php & goto the bottom of the site to download his old games for 8-bit systems, 16-bit systems, et al.

Another shareware/commercial game has been re-released for free download by the copyright authors. The game is called Eye Of The Kraken & it is a 2D point & click game. Read about the game at http://www.absurdus.net/kraken/game.htm & you can download the game from http://www.absurdus.net/kraken/buynow.htm .

Just a word of warning, this game clocks in at a 152.6 MB download so if you are on dial-up, I would suggest using a downloader with restart support such as Free Download Manager, et al.

This game is a Windows game which requires the Visual Basic Runtime to be able to run the game & you can download the game from http://www.funpcgame.com/productO0.html .

The download for the Visual Basic Runtime on the above page is broken but you can download it from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;DisplayLang=en

I'm slowly making progress in my list of game makers I want to contact for this little 'project'.

If anyone can help me get working email contact info for any of the following companies, I'd be grateful. ;)

Microprose (featuring Micro Value / Micro Style / Spectrum Holobyte)

Mindscape (featuring Capstone / The Software Toolworks)

Ocean (bought by Infogrames)

Titus (featuring Palace)

Psygnosis

THQ (featuring Rainbow Arts / Softgold)

GT Interactive (featuring Renegade)

As far as I can understand from their reply, Magnetic Fields may provide links to downloads from their homepage soon if everything checks out with their former publisher Gremlin. Magnetic Fields are responsible for awesome racing series Lotus Turbo Challenge and Supercars.

I've mailed Sales Curve ([email protected]) too, to ask them about releasing Silkworm, SWIV and Rodland among others, as well as contacting Silmarils ([email protected]).

I've also contacted neo Software (now called Rockstar Vienna, part of Rockstar) to ask them if they're willing to release some of the neo Classics on their homepage. Their email is [email protected] if anyone else wants to get in touch with them.

GT Interactive was purchased by Infogrames (now under the ATARI brand)

THQ is still around (they are the publisher of Supreme Commander)

Psygnosis (publisher of the entire WipeOut series, among others) was purchased by Sony Computer Entertainment of America (SCEA).

While WipeOut was a flagship pack-in title for the original PlayStation, it was developed (and published) by then-indie developer Psygnosis. In fact, both the first two titles in the trilogy were also published by Psygnosis for the PC (WipeOut: 2097 for the Playstation was called WipeOut: XL in US PC trim; amazingly, though it was included with several 3dfx Voodoo Graphics and Voodoo II cards, WipeOut: XL was a Direct3D Windows-based title, and a great looking one at that. It had some of the best rain effects in *any* game of its day, and they were unique to the PC version. One rather persistent rumor was that like the first two games in the trilogy, WipeOut 3 was also going to be a dual-platform title; however, the acquisition of Psygnosis by SCEA ruined that idea, and WipeOut 3 became Playstation-exclusive.).

great thread cappuchok,

I took a look at liberatedgames.org's forums and found out that S.WI.N.E (RTS)can be downloaded for free:

http://www.stormregion.com/

Liberatedgames also brought back memories of Allegiance (great online MP space sim with strategic gameplay), which indeed has been available for free for quite a while (47MB download):

http://www.freeallegiance.org/modules.php?...nload&cid=2

:-)

Ahhhh, S.W.I.N.E. Even in the US when Red Alert was king (I ran into the demo for S.W.I.N.E between the original RA and RA2), S.W.I.N.E was a strategy title that, while serious, didn't take itself that way. Even their ads would have you ROTFL (they referred to RTS as Rabbit Tail Stew *and* Real Tasty Sausage, after the two sides in S.W.I.N.E). The free full version is available both as a torrent and a single large download (in English, French, or German). Glad to see it available.

Maybe this would be the thread to ask in..

I'm looking for a game I used to play on my Apple IIc, back in the day .. You were a spy trying to rescue someone, and all I remember is it had multiple stages, like a stage where you were flying a plane, a stage where you were going up a mountain in a ski lift, and all sorts of great stuff... I can remember when you died, the screen used to say "EAT DIRT --" where the -- is, it was the main characters name..

Unfortunately, thats all I can remember. :(

Spotted this on Virtual PC Guy's blog, but it's posted in a thread here as well:

Command & Conquer Gold is now freeware

Great stuff, and a first for Electronic Arts I believe (releasing a previously commercial game as freeware, that is). Very nice.

Telltale Games have released episode 4 of the first "season" of the new "Sam & Max" episodic games as freeware, get it at Telltale Games' website, and consider buying the entire season if you like the free episode (the version you buy in regular stores is crippled with SecuROM, so if you care about keeping your originals safe by always playing from backups (if you're a longtime LucasArts fan, you probably live by this advice that is touted in every LucasArts manual I can remember), I'd recommend buying it online directly from Telltale).

The release of GTA1 was what prompted me to start this thread in the first place so it should be listed in my top post as well as in several later messages by others. :D

It's been a long time since I posted to this thread but I was over at Aminet downloading some Amiga games & I noticed another Amiga commerical game was released for free download. The game was released last year & the game is called Aqua. Aqua is Myst style graphic adventure game that was originally

made for the Amiga as a commercial product and later ported to

MorphOS as part of the SuperBundle program.

The author released the game for free download as as a gift to those that continue to support

MorphOS and Amiga software. Both MorphOS and Amiga executables are

included as well as all required data files.

The game is downloadable at the role playing section of Aminet at http://aminet.net/game/role.

This game is released as 4 separate downloads which are:

Aqua_1.lha

Aqua_2.lha

Aqua_3.lha

Aqua_4.lha

The homepage of the author is at http://members.shaw.ca/realstar/ .

I suggest that everyone check out the games section of Aminet located at http://aminet.net/tree?path=game , there are a good amount of shareware/commerical games which have been released for free download on Aminet. Game such as Aqua, Genetic Species, et al.

Well, I found another site which has legal downloads of classic video games. The site that i'm gonna mention is related to the Tandy Color Computer aka Coco. The site at http://nitros9.lcurtisboyle.com/coco_game_list.html lists all the games released for the Coco and it also has a few of the games available for download (the authors have given permission for the games to be distrubuted for free), the games that you can download have (includes download) next to their name.

Great news for all video game fans! I just found out that Back2theroots is back up and running. Goto http://www.back2roots.org to download legal Amiga programs.

This is EXCELLENT. I remember several years ago when we thought that we had lost Back2theroots which is one of the great archive or legal amiga software.

I was going thru my old posts and saw that the website for Polarware aka Penguin Software is dead. But the former owner of Polarware has a new website for the games released under Penguin Software and it's located at http://graphicsmagician.com/polarware/ . The games are still downloadable for free at the site listed in this post.

The website listed for DCGames that I posted several years ago is dead but you can still download DCGames at http://members.chello.at/theodor.lauppert/games/dcgames.htm .

Also, the website for Miura Warrior is dead but you can still dowload this game from Home Of The Underdogs located at http://www.the-underdogs.info/game.php?id=2339 .

The website for Dungeons of Morabis is also dead also but you can still download the game Home Of The Underdogs located at http://www.the-underdogs.info/game.php?id=4517 .

Dungeon Master Java has a new download location and it's located at http://dmjava.free.fr/original/index.htm .

Also, the remake of the old Dungeon Master game called Chaos Strikes Back has a new download location at http://dmweb.free.fr/?q=node/851 .

Adventure Construction Kit (ACK) which was released as freeware several years ago has now been updated by the original author. It is now up to version 3.03 and it now runs on Windows and OS X. ACK used to run only on DOS. You can download the new versions from http://www.mozomedia.com/index.php?option=...7&Itemid=45 .

OK, shoot me for not posting about "Free" games but I would like to draw your attention to Good Old Games : Link - Good Old Games Website.

They will be selling old PC games for a few quid each. They're all updated and patched to work on everything up to and including Vista. The games are DRM free and you also get added goodies like MP3 soundtracks and PDF manuals etc with each purchase. I signed up for the Beta and grabbed myself Fallout 1 and 2.

Check it out.

Talking of steam... although not 'free' Half Life 1 is available for '$0.98'/98cents until the 21st November at Noon PST.

It has been for a few days but haven't seen a post about it on here before. Apologies for re-posting it if it has already been posted...

It is an amazing game for those who haven't played it, and at this price is well worth the money.

If you want an even older game I believe Red Alert 1 is available as Freeware from the red alert website.

    • I think it depends on what you're looking for to do; get an innate understanding of the night sky or a "quicker" path to astrophotography end results. I put "quicker" in quotes because with my Dwarf 3, I easily spend 3-4 hour sessions, half an hour driving to an un-light polluted place, setting up the smart scope + tripod for equatorial tracking, spending a few hours shooting, merging photo sessions, etc. It's something I still need to set aside a good part of an evening to do, all in all. With practice, I can probably begin cutting time here but I think where smart scopes find their home is among people who love to shoot the night sky but don't have the spare time to go deep with the "navigator level" attunement to the night sky itself.
    • I misread the title and thought Teams itself would be redesigned. Imagine having this one as a native WinUI app.
    • Dell, HP PCs ran into endless reboot, BitLocker recovery loops but Windows 11 isn't to blame by Sayan Sen Last month Neowin reported on a major issue on Dell systems wherein a bug in its official support tool was leading to endless blue screen of death (BSOD) and restarts. Following our report, Dell officially acknowledged its SupportAssist-related crash issue, confirming that the culprit is not Microsoft's operating system but rather a faulty version of its own remediation software. In a newly published support advisory, Dell stated that version 5.5.16.0 of Dell SupportAssist Remediation and Alienware SupportAssist Remediation can trigger blue screen errors and unexpected system restarts. The company notes that the problematic component operates independently of the main SupportAssist application, meaning users should not remove the primary SupportAssist software when troubleshooting the issue. According to Dell, the crashes are linked specifically to the SupportAssist Remediation service, which is bundled with SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools, and as such it has since released an updated version, 5.5.16.1, which is said to resolve the problem. Affected users are advised to first verify whether version 5.5.16.0 is installed by checking the Installed Apps section in Windows Settings. If so, Dell recommends updating SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools through either SupportAssist's "Update Software" feature or Dell Command Update. Dell also advises users to back up important data before performing the update and to ensure systems remain connected to power throughout the installation process. If you are still having issues though make sure to report to the Dell support forum. As it turns out though Dell is not the only PC maker currently dealing with update-related headaches as HP is also facing a separate but probably equally frustrating issue involving recent Windows Secure Boot updates that were released with recent Windows 11 Patch Tuesdays. Similar to Dell, HP also put up its own support article where it explains the issue. The company says that affected devices could hit a brick wall when booting as they run into a BitLocker recovery loop after the April 2026 updates. The problem appears to affect systems wherein the new UEFI Secure Boot CA 2023 certificates fail to apply properly. As such affected users will find themselves entering their recovery key over and over again despite the system otherwise functioning normally. HP says such PCs should be updated to the latest available BIOS version and configured with the necessary Secure Boot certificates before installing Microsoft's Windows 11 Patch Tuesday updates. Systems that are already experiencing the problem may require BIOS configuration changes to restore normal boot behavior. Admins can find information regarding that in the support article here on HP's official website.
    • Getting further away from the artistic study of mental disease that was the first game... (which never needed any sequels to begin with) But I get it, a company has to make money. And the second was at least visually impressive, if not in any other way.
    • If its the devs fault you would think Unreal would help M$ take full advantage of Unreal and work with them to fix the performance issues. Otherwise they are catching unwarranted bad press.
