Travelers' Laptops May Be Detained At Border

TheNay - it wasnt a "bush government inside job," it was an elitist job - the global elite. Democrat, republican - it doesnt matter. dont think Obama as president would be any different!

9/11 was another example of an operation to invade countries and control citizens.

the US (and UK for that matter) is quickly turning into a fascist country.

I never said Obama would be any different. But, seeing how the VP of the US right now owns a big part of Haliburton (which makes military stuff for the US), well when they went to Iraq he made millions. Makes you wonder. And no doubt other countries were involved, UK, Israel, etc etc.. either way I never fully trust the government of any country, it's corrupted in some way or another.

If I have nothing to hide, then fine, hold me in contempt. It's a violation of my 4th amendment rights. Unless DHS and Bush has somehow managed to repeal the 4th amendment without 3/4 of states approval then I believe I am safe.

I'm not a lawyer but I agree. I think a good case could be made out of the first US citizen to assert their 4th and 5th amendment rights when entering the country. Giving up a password could incriminate people and thus I would think it protected.

Now, under these laws they could still keep your kit for however long they wanted (aka 'reasonable') but at least you would be standing your ground.

What about foreigners coming to the US?

When I go to the US for my company, I usually have a laptop with some company information on it: typically whatever I need when I go see the clients. What about industrial spying?

If I get my laptop detained, I am pretty much useless without it.

That's why they make truecrypt. Just encrypt to the point that it would take so much time and effort for them to get at any data on your machine and make it pointless for them.

Truecrypt can protect you from unwanted hands if the data that you want to encrypt is in a hidden drive inside the truecrypt drive.

The other solution is install some complicated Linux distro like Slackware, make sure X.org doesn't start automatically and let them have fun with it  You'll hear them go "WE NEED A GEEK, I REPEAT: WE NEED A GEEK".

    • New PowerToys update fixes memory leaks and other issues by Taras Buria Another bug-fixing update is available for PowerToys version 0.100. After releasing version 0.100.1 with a bunch of bug fixes and patches, Microsoft pushed version 0.100.2 to address two important issues with one of Command Palette Dock's features. With PowerToys 0.100.2, Microsoft fixed the performance meter displaying incorrect values and memory leaks, which are particularly unwanted things in the current situation with overpriced PC hardware. Here is the changelog: Reverted a Performance Monitor dock refresh change that forced item refreshes on every metric update Fixed a memory leak in the Performance Monitor dock extension by reusing stable network upload/download band items instead of creating new list items on each refresh For those unfamiliar, Command Palette Dock is a relatively new addition to PowerToys. It is a taskbar-like tool that you can keep on top of the screen to pin various useful widgets, commands, and more. It can display time, weather, your PC's performance metrics, and more. Microsoft introduced the Command Palette Dock in March 2026 in PowerToys 0.98. Microsoft has dedicated documentation for Command Palette Dock, and you can check it out on the official Microsoft Learn website. You can update PowerToys to the latest version by going to Settings > General and clicking "Check for updates." Alternatively, you can download the installer from GitHub using this link. In other news, Microsoft is working on a new window-management utility for PowerToys. Called Alt Window Cycle, it will let you use the Alt + ` shortcut to switch between different windows in a single app. You can learn more about the tool here.
    • You did take leaf out of Trumps book already and had brexit - only to harm yourself. The same goes with this AI nonsense. The obvious solution for these companies is to move their head office to Brussels. I can see quite much irony there... 🙂
    • Thank gawd AT&T never worked with the US gov....
    • Wonder if they are trying to slow down Linux traction (not saying this is the only factor) in the consumer space. With the most pressure probably being steam deck/box, etc.
