Verdiem announced Edison, a free energy monitoring application that allows eco-conscious consumers to actively control their PC?s energy consumption ? and their household?s carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.

Microsoft and Climate Savers Computing Initiative (CSCI) are supporting Edison as an easy way for consumers to become active to reach the Climate Savers Computing Initiative?s goal of reducing global CO2 emissions from the operation of computers by 54 million tons by 2010. The idea is nice, but something is not right with this app...

After install you must register online, or the application won't run. It needs a port to be opened for the activation, and for communicating with the server.

I just asked the online support, that if the registration is skippable and why is this registration is so important for an app, which works locally on the PC.

They said no, its unavoidable, and the port is needed to send anonymous information about what type of pc, and parts you're using... (How can that be anonymous if you just registered? :huh: )

I still wasn't satisfied with the answer, and they hang up. :crazy:

I also requested the chat log in e-mail (after hang up the window clears), but I still didn't get it.

I'm sure it will be dismissed as useless bloat, but it is definitely a very pretty little app and does perform some neat functions, like the savings calculator. It's actually better in Vista, where the power settings are buried in such a weird way.

Already uninstalled...don't have much of a choice on the options, only configures turning monitor off, turning off hard disks and putting system in standby...makes a profile in Windows Power Schemes for the 3 options. I don't need a program for this, but I guess if people like seeing some pretty program tell them they may save a few pennies extra a year, I guess it'll keep their little hearts content.

110 watts = not right...

and nither in my pc

it says my moniter is 28" which is really a 20"

and lol it say my geforce 8800 GTS only use 8 watts

and nevermind my quad core which it think it only use ~40 watt what the :p that not a mobile cpu and more then that my quad core is oced by ~35%

Is the site not compatible with Google Chrome? It seems to download a *.download file rather than an executable. I had to download it with IE...

Looks like a straight forward application although anyone can do this from the convenience of their Screen Saver configurations. (set it to POWER-SAVER)

      Google's new hand-wave reCAPTCHA can be bypassed with a stock photo by Ivan Jenic Image: Screenshot Google is testing a new reCAPTCHA method that asks you to wave at your camera to prove you're human. So, besides solving puzzles and reading distorted text, you can now use your computer’s camera to pass the verification test. When the hand gesture verification is triggered, your browser asks for camera access and prompts you to perform a simple gesture, like a wave or an open palm. Google says it records a short video of the movement and uses AI to extract 21 hand-knuckle coordinates to complete the verification process. The video is then immediately deleted, and Google swears it doesn't keep it. The process alone can be uncomfortable for people who wouldn’t want their biometric data, which hand scans technically qualify as, recorded. But it gets even more nuanced, as early testers discovered that the new hand-waving reCAPTCHA can be passed with a simple stock image. A user on X tested the new challenge using a stock image of a hand fed through OBS Virtual Camera, and it passed. I wanted to verify it, so I tried the same thing. It took me a few tries and a few stock images, but in the end, I was also able to pass the test. I simply had to readjust the stock image of a generic person waving inside OBS, and Google’s mechanism registered it as a legitimate hand gesture. Once again, it didn’t even have to be a video or an AI-generated hand animation. Given the simplicity of the process, the entire action can be automated in minutes. All it takes is a simple Python script to render the new reCAPTCHA method obsolete. And it doesn’t even have to be an AI bot, which is usually used for solving puzzles and other verification methods. The new reCAPTCHA method is still in its early phase, and Google will, hopefully, update its AI to at least reject still images. However, this incident, combined with users’ initial skepticism about Google’s practices regarding user data, likely won’t make too many people wave at the camera anytime soon.
