If he is living there and people are talking broken English to him and it's how he has been talking for a long while then it's difficult to just switch off. I remember when I was in Thailand and going to clubs and talking to people in broken English night after night for over a month. It was funny because I'd turn to my friends who did speak English, and keep talking in broken English to them and they'd do the same before realising we could actually both speak English just fine.
