New to SLR lenses: Difference between 18-55mm lens and 35-80mm lens

Recommended Posts

Im new to Lenses when it comes to SLR or anything!

so what is the difference between the Canon 18-55mm lens and the 35-80mm lens

which is better for what and better overall

I am going to be shooting everything, from landscapes to portraits.

Without a doubt go for the 18-55mm. It shoots nice portraits and landscapes. Its far more versatile in terms of its mm range. It has a better minimum f stop. Its light and compact. It has a minimum focusing distance of 25cm throughout its zoom range and can therefore take nice macro images whether it be of plants or people etc etc. It is an awesome general purpose lens.

35-80 was the kit lens for one of the film SLRs. Doubt the lens is optically up to par with the 18-55, especially the IS version which has great optics. Equally, 35-80mm isn't a very useful focal range on a DSLR. I'd go with the 18-55.
