Alright, I just brought my first HDTV and it's ****ing awesome! It's so big! 42inches and it's a Toshiba. I'm getting the HD Cable box tomorrow and unfortunately they only give component cables with it... I've looked at the cables at Sears where I brought the tv... (no interest for 2 years) :) and they are over priced! Now I do know that Monster cables are the best but what gives if I just get a HDMI cable of eBay?? It's the same wire, no? The same elements are in it and should work the same.

And my other question is, If I buy the HDMI cable, Do I need to buy anything else to connect the 360 on it? Does it need some sort of special adapter?

Thanks

He won't see the difference between the component and the HDMI either.

Moved here

Yeah, but doesn't HDMI support the higher resolutions? I connected the 360 via the components and it looks like horrible with the widescreen.

And thanks guys, I just got this http://cgi.ebay.com/New-Gold-Premium-HDMI-...1QQcmdZViewItem

I'll be picking it up tomorrow since he's in brooklyn also. Thanks I only brought one as to just to test them out. Thanks. I can;t WAIT!!!!! :woot:

Monster's marketing department has gotten to you. They are not the best the just want you to think that they are. There really is no difference from the 5 dollar cable and the 100 dollar cable... well there might be a little more shielding but honestly you won't see a difference.

Oh Really? And I suppose the quality of analog cables doesn't matter either? That the $3 ones are just as good as the $200 ones?

Funny, I just watched a investigative video on this yesterday on CBC's (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) website. After watching the video, you won't have any doubts about ordering the $4 cable from Monoprice, which is the best place to order any cable/adapter from.

Here's the link: http://www.cbc.ca/marketplace/2008/02/20/packing_the_deal/

Here are a couple of other interesting threads:

And while on the topic of Monster Cables, this is one of the most well-written letters I have ever read responding to a cease-and-desist request from Monster's lawyers:

We're talking about a digital signal here. Not analog.

Yes, but cable quality always matters, despite whether its a digital or analog signal. I'm not saying that Monster is good value, its over priced, but other high quality cables (not saying that Monster falls into this category) do make a difference, especially over long distances or on very large displays.

Yeah actually that seems correct because even RJ45 network cables lose some data when run over long distances, if i'm not mistaken. But 6ft should be good enough because all the Cable boxes and consoles are always near the television.

The longer the cable is, the more the signal degrades. Doesn't matter if the cables are high quality or not.

as someone who worked at future shop

lol. You're quite the expert there, aren't you buddy? Future Shop, oh, impressive!

I went to buy a HDMI cable a few weeks back (from currys :p), and one of the dudes their said "trust me mate, buy the more expensive one because over time the signal degrades on the cheap versions, and the sync for audio and video goes out when watching high quality stuff like blu-rays"

I realized it was an advertising stunt, so I still bought the cheap version of course. But I'm wondering if some of it's true. Because it sounds like it could be "goes out of sync with HQ films" that makes sense, the cheaper cables can't transfer over as much data as quickly, therefor there is a delay

??

I doubt it, their all the same cables.... atleast thats how they should be.

I believe the original question was which cable is worth buying? No info was given on distance, so therefore, the replies that suggested

Mono as a good source were spot on. If someone were to ask about running an HDMI cable across the house, then maybe a "nicer" brand

would work.

As someone pointed out above, I have a box full of cables, half of which I can't remember where I bought them or what brand they are, but

they all work. I bought my HDMI cable from Target for $25 and it looks as nice as my friend's $50 best buy cable. Please, please do not succumb

to the snake oil myths that Monster Cable pushes on people.

Just buy the cheap one. Retail stores make a boat load on accessories such as cables, which is why they want you to get the expensive $100 cable.

I have three different HD cables: an expensive Monster HDMI cable, cheap HDMI cable, and a component cable set. They all look basically the same. So basically, the justification for a more expensive HDMI cable is not there. Go with the cheap route.

Component supports HD. If you're talking about upconversion with DVD players (like your Xbox), that's a different story. Upconversion via component is artificially limited to as a form of copy-protection. A FIOS box is not outputting 1080p, for one.

monoprice is by far the best place for any cable you need. everywhere else is over priced, for something so simple! it makes you wonder how much profit per cable people are making. Look at monoprice.com and the sonystore... you'll see like a $100 - $150 mark up...

First off, you basically have the same TV I have. I have a Toshiba 42" HDTV that was purchased 5 months ago.

When my father and I went to buy an HDMI cable for our DVR (which doubles as an HD cable box), we were able to find a $9 3 foot HDMI cable that was Nexxtech (Circuit City) brand - it works perfectly fine.

  • 2 weeks later...

i am wondering about hdmi cables also and the prices

recently i purchased a 50' 1080p hdtv lcd from bestbuy

i got two of the monstercables for $120 or so each. one for computer, and one for dvd player. they were expensive as **** but im a noob so i just bought in.

anyways, ive been reading reviews around newegg, monoprice, and some googled pages and it seems MOST people say their is no difference between the $5 hdmi cables at monoprice and the $120 ones at bestbuy in terms of picture quality.

and some say they have problems or notice poor quality when playing their ps3's so they went back to the monster cables. i dont have a ps3 yet but planing to buy one very soon; simply for grand turismo and blueray player.

question here though, for those here who have big screens and using a ps3; have you guys ever gotten any problems? whether it be while watching a movie or playing games? this is my first time using hdmi im a bit noobish. i know watching movies should seem fine but when playing fast paced video through a ps3 console it certainly may sound like an issue

should i try out these $5 monoprices one and save $200?
