They worked for "Battlestar Galactica" so why not for the Stargate franchise?

Syfy has ordered 30 webisodes to accompany the upcoming launch of "Stargate: Universe," the third live action series based on the 1994 science-fiction movie.

The series features a group of explorers who embark on a new mission after a ninth chevron is discovered on the stargate. On the other side of the event horizon, they make a remarkable discovery; a lost ship of the Ancients called Destiny. With its systems powered up, its reluctant crew are forced to complete the mission originally given to the craft thousands of years earlier.

Unlike the "Galactica" webisodes however, this series will have a far greater connection to the adventures unfolding on a weekly basis throughout the television season and will feature most of the shows cast. Through the aid of a device left by the ancients, viewers will essentially be spying on the characters as they go about their business on the Destiny.

?It?s flying around and spying on people,? series co-creator Brad Wright said. ?They are literally just voyeuristic scenes we?re shooting specifically for the Web. It?s an extra way to get a window on our program and gives fans a slice of life look at our ship."

Through its unique design, the kino will also offer a first person view of the series as the action unfolds, and will also be used through M.A.L.P's to explore new worlds through the gate in an effort to bring fans closer to the Stargate universe than ever before.

No definite date has been announced for the release of the webisodes but there is already considerable interest in how they will play out. Space, essentially the Canadian equivalent of the Syfy, has picked up the rights to re-broadcast the video clips on their own site

"Stargate: Universe" premiere's on Oct. 2 on Syfy.

Lou Diamond Phillips says his character, Col. Telford, is kind of a jerk who needs to do things by the book. And he explains how he gets involved in the action:

I'm supposed to go through the Stargate into this unknown address. The base is attacked, and a lot of people who should not be in charge are stranded on this ship out in the middle of nowhere called the Destiny. I get stuck on Earth, and it's my mission to try to get to these people ... back, but I have no way to physically get on the ship. ... [so I] keep using these telecommunications stones, exchanging bodies with people and trying to take over and ... get them home.

The body-exchanging technology, discovered in the two-part episode "Arena," leads to what Phillips believes will be the most talked-about love scene of the fall. [Sci Fi Wire]

A StarGate Universe casting call has sparked the fires of internet rage for its description of quadriplegic character Eleanor Perry, who "possesses" Ming-Na's lesbian character Camile Wray, then turns her straight.

Dr. Perry trades places with Camille Wray (played by Ming-Na), a lesbian woman who is in a long-term relationship back on Earth. Perry explores the possibility (and acceptability) of not only a sexual relationship inside Wray?s body on board the ship, but also a heterosexual relationship.

The description of the character use some pretty poor choice words to describe the quadriplegic character's body, including the term "useless," and hints that she's asexual because she's disabled:

[ELEANOR PERRY] (35-40) and quite attractive. A brilliant scientist who happens to be a quadriplegic. Affected since childhood, her disability has rendered her body physically useless. However, after being brought on board the Destiny as the only person who may be able to save the ship and her crew from certain annihilation, she is given temporary powers that enable her to walk again and to finally experience intimacy. Strong guest lead. NAMES PREFERRED. ACTRESS MUST BE PHYSICALLY THIN. (THINK CALISTA FLOCKHART).

SyFy responded on twitter, via Craig Engler, the SVP & GM of Digital Media:

We're very sensitive to the issues raised by the description of the character Eleanor Perry. We're working with the Stargate producers to address this & ensure that this character is handled sympathetically and responsibly.

right so I'm confused this Dr Perry is going to change places with Camile for one episode or many or what?

and what does names preferred mean?

Casting calls are funny, I like " MUST BE PHYSICALLY THIN. (THINK CALISTA FLOCKHART)." LOL awesome.

Michael Shanks is my second favourite character from Stargate. Obviously RDA takes the cake but Shanks and Christopher Judge (Teal'c) were next in line. Obviously Amanda Tapping, but I have a different reason why I like her ;) I'll watch this show mostly for cameos. I'm not really all that psyched for the series. When's it start again?

Stargate Universe will premiere in the United Kingdom on Tuesday, October 6, according to the Scottish Daily Record. As we had hoped, that?s just four days after the U.S. premiere on Syfy ? meaning fans in both countries will get to watch new episodes the same week.

The newspaper today featured an article on actor Robert Carlyle, a native of Glasgow. Carlyle plays Dr. Nicholas Rush on SGU, and emphasized that while he and his family are now spending eight months out of the year in Vancouver, British Columbia, he?s not ?leaving? Scotland.

What he is leaving (for now), though, is the U.K. film industry.

?About 18 months ago, I decided to come to L.A. to stick my head above the parapet and see what?s out here because so many of my friends were doing that,? Carlyle said. ?And, to be honest, back home the British industry is not in the best health at all.

?So it was, ?What do I do? Do I sit here, kick my heels and wait for film projects to come up? Or do I try and make work for myself?? And that?s the first time I?d ever done that, so I put it about with agents and managers that I was looking for something different, a different challenge.?

The producers of Stargate Universe convinced him that he?d be perfect for the role of Dr. Rush, who would be a series lead but not an entirely trustworthy character.

?I?d never done science fiction before,? he said. ?The first thing I said to the creators was, ?Why do you want me to do this?? This is not my thing at all. ? One of the things I thought was quite interesting was when they said they were looking for someone who people dislike but who is quite likeable. I thought, ?I?m your man for that.? So that?s what kind of drew me to it.?

Carlyle also said that he was drawn to the notion of living in Vancouver rather than Los Angeles ? and had he found a show that filmed in L.A., his decision to do it may have been different.

?Vancouver is a different place [than L.A.],? he said. ?It?s a different vibe and a different buzz to the work. It?s a beautiful, beautiful place.?

    • Citizen Sleeper and Robobeat are free to claim on the Epic Games Store by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe PC gamers have two more games they can add to their library without needing to open their wallets, as the Epic Games Store's freebie offer has just refreshed. That means last week's Warhammer 40K Speed Freeks and The Ouroboros King offer has been replaced by two new games, which happen to be Robobeat and Citizen Sleeper copies. From the duo, Robobeat lands from developer Simon Fredholm, offering a rhythm-based action game. Released only last year, the title puts you into the shoes of Ace, a bounty hunter that's targeting the robot showman Frazzer. The fast-paced title offers movement techniques like wall-running, sliding, and bunny hopping to zoom around while shooting enemies, but the requirement is doing everything to the beat. Outside of built-in tracks, the title also lets players upload their own music to populate its levels too. Next, Citizen Sleeper lands from Jump Over The Age, a sci-fi RPG adventure taking place in a ruined space station where thousands of people are trying to survive. The tabletop RPG-inspired title uses things like dice and clocks to change how the player approaches situations and survives their day-to-day lives. There is a large range of characters to meet with in the station, each with their own storylines and alliances. "You are a sleeper, a digitised human consciousness in an artificial body, owned by a corporation that wants you back," says the developer about the setting. "Thrust amongst the unfamiliar and colourful inhabitants of the Eye, you need to build friendships, earn your keep, and navigate the factions of this strange metropolis, if you hope to survive to see the next cycle." The Citizen Sleeper and Robobeat giveaways are set to run until June 25 on the Epic Games Store, giving PC gamers seven days to claim the latest offer. Once this closes out, new freebies will take its place on the same day. They are supposed to be copies of RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 and Voidwrought. Don't forget that mobile gamers can check out the Epic Game Store's weekly giveaways on Android and iOS to grab a freebie there as well.

    • The Online part hasn't even been announced and probably won't be included on day one. This is a massive singleplayer game.
    • While I agree with all that, it just proves there's an a** built for every seat.
