Runescape.com > MMORPG

Wikipedia:

RuneScape is a Java-based MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game) operated by Jagex Ltd.

It has approximately ten million active free accounts and is a browser-based game with some degree of 3D

rendering. RuneScape was created by Andrew Gower, the creator of DeviousMUD, the forerunner to

RuneScape, in 1998. Rewritten and renamed, the first version of RuneScape was released to the public on 4

January 2001 in beta form. It has a free-to-play option, and a simple interface that is accessible on most web

browsers.

RuneScape takes place in the fantasy-themed realm of Gielinor, which is divided into several different

kingdoms, regions, and cities.[1][2] Players can travel throughout Gielinor on foot, by using magical

teleportation spells and devices, or mechanical means of transportation.[3] Each region offers different types

of monsters, materials, and quests to challenge players. Unlike many other MMORPGs, there is no linear path

that must be followed. Players appear on the screen as customizable avatars, setting their own goals and

objectives. Players can combat both monsters and other players, complete quests, or increase their

experience in any of the available skills.[4] Players interact with each other through trading, chatting, or

playing combative or cooperative mini-games.

Funorb.com > Java Based Games

FunOrb is a casual gaming site produced by Jagex Ltd. Launched on 27 February 2008, it is the company's first

major release since their successful MMORPG, RuneScape. All of the games are programmed in Java.

Jagex has announced that this site is targeted towards the "hard casual" or "time-pressured" gamer[1]

market and that it intends to expand into the mobile phone games market.[2]

nitrome.com > Very Good Original Flash Based?? Games.

The games produced by Nitrome Ltd. are significant for being almost entirely made in pixel art

and is also the main form of design in the company, as for also being adapted to the website design,

almost not using anti-alpha at all.

The developer has also supported MTV Arcade[2], Wrigley's Candystand and significantly Miniclip, which

is also the company's main assistant in advertising. The company has also made advergames, which,

unlike the previously mentioned, are made to advertise a product or service. The company also allows

for websites to place the company's games on their websites, for an undetermined fee[3].

Most of the games are divided into levels (usually between 20 and 50), and also give the player a choice

of which level to continue on, after losing. Some games also feature the concept of bosses (such as

Pest Control)

Nitrome also includes "Start-Ups" to all it's games. Once the game has finished loading, a "Nitrome"

screen will appear (as well as it's companion "jingle") which will be in context to the game (e.g. in Off

the Rails, you see the Nitrome logo on a train cart pulling up at a station, with the jingle ensuing)

Miniclip.com > Flash Based Minigames

Wikipedia:

Miniclip is an online company known for their browser-based games. The site was first launched in

2001[1] by Robert Small. Small was fresh out of university when he founded the company with Tihan

Presbie, and today provides Cartoons and Ecards alongside their selection of games that are classic as

well as new creations. It is the world's largest online games website, with 43 million unique users per

month and is also the largest privately held website on the Internet.

TribalWars.net > Village / War Simulator

Wikipedia:

Tribal Wars is a browser based game developed by InnoGames GmbH. The game originated in Germany under

the name Der Stamm and due to the success of the German only version, a .net version was launched. It is

programmed in PHP and runs in any relatively modern web browser.

Although the game is free to play it is financially supported by banner advertising. There is an option to pay a

fee to remove these advertisements. There is also an option to pay for a Premium Account which gives you

more features than the standard free version.

ClubPenguin.com > Cute Game Where You play a penguin? :)

Wikipedia:

Club Penguin is an online game developed by New Horizon Interactive. Using cartoon penguins as avatars,

players waddle around, chat, play minigames and participate in other activities with one another in a

snow-covered virtual world. After beta-testing, Club Penguin was made available to the general public on

October 24, 2005[1] and has since expanded into a large online community — growing to the extent that by

late 2007, it was claimed that Club Penguin had over 12 million user accounts.[2] While free memberships are

available, revenue is predominaty raised through paid memberships which allow players to access a range of

additional features, (such as the ability to purchase virtual clothing, furniture and "pets" for their penguins

through the use of in-game currency).[3] The success of Club Penguin led to New Horizon being purchased by

The Walt Disney Company in August 2007 for the sum of $350 million, with an additional $350 million in

bonuses should specific targets be met by 2009.[2]

The game is designed for children between the ages of 6 and 14 years old.[4] Thus a major focus of the

developers has been on child safety,[5] with a number of features introduced to the game to facilitate this —

including offering a "Safe Chat" mode, whereby users select their comments from a menu; filtering that

prevents swearing and the revelation of personal information;[5] and moderators (along with veteran players)

who police the game.[6] Nevertheless, the game has its critics, some of whom have claimed that it teaches

consumerism[7] and that it can encourage cheating.

astroempires.com > Strategy SciFi Game? (Not Sure)

travian.com/travian.us > Village / War Simulator(Ty Nonick)

Wikipedia:

Travian is a German browser-based game developed by Travian Games GmbH[1] that is largely based on a

predecessor game called Tribal Wars. In 2006, the game was ranked first in the "best browser-based game

with over 10,000 players" category of the German website Travian Games. The game's developers drew

roughly from Classical antiquity and particularly from the Roman Empire to create a predominantly militaristic

real-time strategy. Along with two English versions, and the original German version, the game has been

translated into 30 other languages[2][3], and today has just over 3 million players and over 150 servers

worldwide.[4] It is programmed in PHP and runs in the browser. It was the first game of its type to be

playable through a mobile phone, using a java platform.[5]

http://www.cityempires.net/ >web based city/empire simulator

The year was 2016 when modern civilization was destroyed. The war that was begun by politicians

was finished by thousands of mushroom clouds. Governments persisted for a short while, protected by their

underground bunkers. But the infrastructure that had sustained them was gone, and the last bastions of

humanity collapsed upon themselves. What few survivors that remained were isolated and struggled to exist.

Untold years passed, and isolated peoples gathered into villages and then communities. You have been

tasked to lead your community into this new era. There have been stories told of other villages who also

struggle to survive. Some are friendly, while others are less than civilized. The choices you make will determine

the fate of your village... your city... your empire.

There are a few servers now, but I still play in the original, Alpha. It's a bit slower based gameplay, but is pretty fun and an easy way to let out the stress.

http://alpha.astroempires.com/profile.aspx?player=7172

That's my account.

The only downside is that to really compete with other people, you need to pay for an upgraded account. It's well worth it for me though, with the amount of time I spend playing it.

I just started this browser based game called Travian so far it seems pretty interesting, def not a fast moving game and looks like its going to be a very strategic game.

"Travian is a browser game with a world full of thousands of users who all begin as the leaders of small villages."

My kids all play various browser-based games. BattleOn, Club Penguin, CrazyMonkeyGames, Runescape, etc.

The kids asked for paid memberships to runescape, so I checked it out before buying it for them, and got hooked. Wife and I still play.

So, yes, in answer to your question, we do play some browser-based games in our household.

ehm, since when quake is browser based? did i miss something?

It's not really browser-based. It's like Battlefield Heroes. All the files are on your hard drive, but you launch it via your web browser.

I dropped by the wikipedia page but it doesn't provide much info.

Where exactly does the game run? Why is the browser needed? Anyone?

RuneScape runs in Java, maybe Id is working on some kind of OpenGL browser plugin to run the game? I'm really puzzled by this game.

i think it does work on opengl. suprisingly, the freshly released Hi def version of runescape weights like 1.7Megabyte, which is just laughable considering the graphics, the game is amazing, but is extremely repetitives at times.

It has a great storyline, one of the best games with storylines and stuff, people laughed about it cause of graphics, with hi def- its an completely mindblowing game now.

I haven't really developed anything in Java for the last ~5 years, so I didn't even think it would have the speed to run games of this caliber. But I guess the JVM improvements and PC's being much faster finally made it possible. It really does take care of multiplatform issues this way.

well, i think it runs quick because it gets downloaded first then run as native code?

correct me if im wrong about that.

Yes, the jvm runs a jit compiler and converts to native binary format, but it's still a really big improvement (performance wise) over what I can remember 5 years ago.

well, runescape has lots of downside being programmed in java too, such as the maximum variable value doesn't let players tip over certain amount of money. though its usally so much that like only 100 players in whole runescape got that much available in liqud cash

There are some browser text-based games like http://www.cybernations.net, http://www.cityempires.net and http://www.nationstates.net

I have a nation on Cyber Nations and I am currently in the top few nations of the Tournament Edition.

    • Finally we can whole-heartedly recommend the AMD 9070 GRE thanks to this discount by Sayan Sen Earlier this month at Computex 2026 AMD released the Radeon RX 9070 GRE for a global audience. We reviewed the GPU and it scored 8 out of 10 for gaming and 7.5 out of 10 for productivity including things like AI performance. The card launched for $550 which we thought was a bit on the higher side, though currently you are getting the chance to get the Gigabyte Gaming variant of the GPU for just $500 thanks to this discount (purchase link under the specs table down below). As such we can finally whole-heartedly recommend this GPU. The card employs Gigabyte's WINDFORCE cooling system which combines multiple design elements such as alternate-spinning Hawk fans, a vapor chamber, and composite heat pipes to manage heat dissipation. The Server-grade Thermal conductive gel further helps in this department. The inclusion of a semi-passive cooling mode allows the fans to remain inactive under low workloads, which allows for reduced noise operation during lighter usage. There is dual BIOS switch that allows toggling between performance and silent modes. The technical specs of the Gigabyte Gaming RX 9070 GRE OC is given in the table below: Get it at the link below: GIGABYTE Gaming Radeon RX 9070 GRE 12GB GDDR6 GPU (GV-R907GREGAMING OC-12GD): $549.99 + $50 discount with promo code in mail => $499.99 (Sold and Shipped by Newegg US) This Newegg deal is US-specific and not available in other regions unless specified. This is a first-party seller link (at the time of article publishing); ensure that you also purchase from a first-party seller link only.
