Avatar size limit

Recommended Posts

I wouldn't mind 96x96, just because it matches the popular IM services (and I'm sick of resizing my avatar down :p)

Edit: A bit of CSS later and I've fixed image resizing (they now start off small and get large, instead of being set at 80px no matter what the image is actually sized), and I've increased the max size to 96px (Of course nobody's allowed to use it, but it doesn't hurt). And I've already noticed 3 people in this thread with avatars larger than allowed :p

Not to beat an unruly horse, but I think a size limit change would be nice for neowin.

I think 150x80 would be good.

look at the forum now.. Not everyone uses 80x80, and not everyone will use 150x80.

they could use anything up to 150x80, and if loading is an issue then set a file size limit.

It will however give a lot more freedom of choice, and give some of the graphics gurus something to do for new avatar request.

Here is a little file that kind of shows what a 150x80 avatar will look like.

I couldn't post swf file, but you can still see. Just mouse over Fred's name

Plus 150x80 doesn't change the forum metrics. Nothing gets shifted.

I would like to see longer avatars, it would allow for more creativity. Some could keep the square avatars, and some could have rectangular shaped ones.

Maybe a rule change could come into play in the future (Y)?

however, 150x80 would make the pages a big longer (some with small replies)

I'd rather have 100x100 avatars and signature pictures disabled... signature pictures are huge and aren't really that necessary. Most forums I've visited in the past don't allow signature pictures but they have 100x100 avatars for members, and slightly bigger for 'subscribers'.

We should implement that here.

That would be nice. (Y) (Y) (Y) There could be a Poll made on it.

A 100x100 would shift everything below the avatar 20 pixels, and if someone had an avatar that was 56x70 then a 100x100 shift would make the members look a little unbalanced because of the difference between 80 and 100.

plus 100 pixel wide would still leave a 50 pixel blank space to the right of the avatar. Doesn't it make more sense to take full advantage of perfect spot for a 150x80 avatar?

Since the area where the avatars go is just slightly over 150 pixels an avatar that is 150 pixels wide doesn't shift the forum even the slightest.

and keeping the hight of 80 pixels means nothing will be shifted down.

That makes 150x80 the ideal avatar size for invision power boards. I mean neowin.

think of them as panoramic avatars.

I would suggest to the administration and coders, to crop some images to 80x80, 100x100, 150x80, and 150x100.

test them in the test forum to see what fits best.

I can tell you now. 150x80 fits best. below 80 would look awful, above 80 would mean less cropping, but a nicely cropped 150x80 image looks good.

If there is a size limit now leave it as is. we don't need 1MB avatars.

the red avatar I put in that example flash pic is only 3.91 KB.

It's almost 2009 and 80x80 looks like 2001.

I hope you guys will test, make some screenshots, and discuss this, and then vote on it.

If you fully examine the diffent size avatars in the test forum, and still decide NO everything remains the same then I will respect that.

Yeah but sometimes you want to create one to your needs and it goes just over 50kb you get depressed :p

@gary7 check front page :)

Don't mean to break the rules, but a PHP signature can get past size limit. However, I think it is more of a space / bandwidth issue for neowin, then anything else

I actually like the 150x80 look you've posted, but I don't think anything will be changed.

I think that 150 wide and keeping 80 tall would be fine. No extra real estate would be consumed, since that area is already much wider. I would not object to that sort of change, since it doesn't increase the vertical real-estate.

...

You do realize that it is 150 wide, and still 80 tall, so it would not make pages any longer at all. ;)

i'd be fine with that, after all, the space is already there the dimensions of the forum wouldnt change, same goes for the sigs too, 170px imo is too high, but 550px wide is leaving empty space either side so i wouldn't care if the rules were changed to allow say 95% of the post area width.

    • Nice rant! Expletive after expletive after expletive. Poor petal, I've touched a nerve. Would you like a tissue to wipe those tears away. Btw, nice one calling Neowin trash. Why would you stick around when you disrespect this site and the people behind it? Just go away if you feel that way.
