Comcast to cap monthly bandwidth starting Oct. 1

Recommended Posts

NEW YORK - Comcast Corp., the nation's second-largest Internet service provider, Thursday said it would set an official limit on the amount of data subscribers can download and upload each month.

On Oct. 1, the cable company will update its user agreement to say that users will be allowed 250 gigabytes of traffic per month, the company announced on its Web site.

Comcast has already reserved the right to cut off subscribers who use too much bandwidth each month, without specifying exactly what constitutes excessive use.

"We've listened to feedback from our customers who asked that we provide a specific threshold for data usage and this would help them understand the amount of usage that would qualify as excessive," the company said in a statement on its Web site.

Customers who go over the limit are contacted by the company and asked to curb their usage.

Since the 2nd largest isp in the US is now capping bandwidth nation wide, there goes any hope of net neutrality. A dark dark day.

Well, we already have this down under sadly :( even my "unlimited" connection is limited, I have a data allowance and it gets throttled after I exceed it. It's basically the same as a capped connection, except the capped one, you are charged extra for excessive usage. However, unless your an excessive downloader, capped connections arn't that bad really.

edit: I reread your post. That's a bug with Firefox which shows Stuffit as the default app for zip files though it's not. If you click open anyway, it'll just use your default app for zips on your system.

i don't even think i go over 50GB a month LOL

I don't see this as a problem. If anything it'll make customers choose other services over comcast. Im glad we dont have comcast in the areas where i live.

Oh yes...please explain to me how you come close to using 250 gb in a month...I would love to know.

how does this affect Xbox Live? or any other traffic? anything can be considered a download, technically. anyway, this is pretty disgusting.

All they are doing is enforcing the same limit they have been in the past, but now they are telling people what that limit was.

Well lets hope Time Warner does not follow in my area (I think they might though :( ).

How do you know how much BW you used in a month? Is there some sort of application that shows you how much you use?

Time Warner was rumored to go for a lower limit from what I heard. Just a rumor, though.

As for monitoring bandwidth -- gotta go with an app for your PC or a router that supports it...at least until they (hopefully) come out with a way to keep an eye on your bandwidth at the ISP level.

Exactly what I was wondering as well. Blackice, I'm sorry I guess what you said just went over my head, can I get another explanation? :p

Yeah, how does this affect services like Xbox Live or PSN? Or AppleTV?

What do you reckon? Online gaming uses data. It's a tiny amount and not anything to worry about.

Logging into your account on your ISPs site will tell you or there will usually be a tiny app that sits in your taskbar to tell you that updates itself.

Edit: Most ISPs provide shitloads of IPTV, gaming servers, iTunes etc thats usage does not contribute towards the cap.

All I was saying is that Comcast has been enforcing these caps for quite a while now, but refused to share what the actual cap was. All that happened today is they shared that closely guarded secret.

I'm guessing the whole "it starts October 1st" thing is to make non-savvy customers aware about all of this.

    • Steam Next Fest returns with thousands of new demos to try out by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe Valve has been routinely kicking off demo festivals on Steam for years now, and the second drop of 2026 has just opened its doors. It's a great opportunity for any PC gamers to find some interesting games before they release. The June edition of Steam Next Fest is a week-long digital festival including gameplay slices from a large number of indie developers, though a few major publishers are involved this time too. Interested players can use the Next Fest hub page's various sorting and filtering options to easily sort through the hordes of demos available. The top buttons offer quick access to separate and important sorting options, including "By Genre, By Theme, By Feature," with each one offering more granular settings when clicked. At the same time, the built-in Steam tags system is also available below every page to discover new games more quickly. As always, logging in will also enable Steam gamers to utilize Valve's recommendation algorithms to find game demos they might like, specifically, depending on their past play and purchase histories. This time there is even a toggle now to swap between getting a random and personalized selection as Valve collects more data on the available demos. The Charts section is where you can find the most popular demos on the platform right now, offering up the most hyped titles in a simple list. Right at the kickoff, Mistfall Hunter, Empulse, Echoes of Aincrad, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, Over the Hill, Mortal Shell II, and more are trending. Expect this list to change as the week progresses. This edition of the Steam Next Fest is slated to end on June 22 at 10 AM PT. Valve's latest event is now open, and it can be accessed by going to the dedicated hub page here.

    • Well i'll look into a docking station if needed and use that.    Normally i don't usually have all the drives connected at once,  usually once a month to sync the latest files, and then they go back in there storage area
