Windows Internet Explorer 8 Beta 2 Critical Issues!

***Windows Internet Explorer 8 Beta 2 Critical Issues!***

I have installed Windows Internet Explorer 8 Beta 2 on two computers and have had more than four bugs along the way. I am creating this post to try and get them solved before the applications final release. This should not be happening on more than one PC when already in beta 2 status! My main PC is a home-built P4 3GHz with 2GB DDR running WinXP Pro SP3 upgrading from IE7 final. My other is an Acer AMD Athlon 64 X2 with 1GB DDR2 running WinXP Pro SP3 upgrading from IE7 final. Both systems ran fine before the upgrade and are home PC?s! I have tried to fix all issues in safe-mode, no add-on mode, resetting settings to default, and anything else I could think of with no luck. Other than these four critical bugs I?ve not had many issues other than the occasional crash here and there. I've also posted this on the Microsoft Discussion Communities to see what help can also be garnered there; see link below this paragraph for that post.

Favorites Center Missing Tabs Issue:

This bug I noticed while messing with my favorite?s center on my main PC. After upgrading to IE8B2 my favorites center sidebar has no tabs? You can see an image below of what my favorite?s center looks like and it should have tabs which let me go between history, favorites, and feeds. I know because my other PC has these tabs and they were in IE7. With IE8B2 installed I cannot view or search my history or do other favorites center related tasks like my feeds, etc! The favorite?s center works fine once I uninstall back to IE7. I have tried installing and uninstalling over 10 times with no luck. I?ve also tried no add-ons mode, disabling accelerators, reverting back to default settiImage of issue:f issue:

Another critical bug I have is that the "find on this page" search feature is not working. When I press the control+f buttons simply nothing happens! What should happen is the find pop-up, which is now located at the top of the ie8 page underneath the tabs normally is not appearing. This does work on my other PC but not my main one. I have also tried using the feature in the search pane next to the address bar by dropping down the search icon and going to "Find on this page..." but it does not work and won't stay highlighted. And this feature works fine in IE7 when I uninstall IE8. When I do press the control+f buttons for the first time the space below the tabs does drop down just a bit but it is almost unnoticeable. See the images below for a before and after of when I push the control+f buttons. Also once the control+f buttons have been pushed the space will not get any bigger if I press them again. This issue happens on the P4 3GHz but not on the Acer AMD. To try and fix the issue I?ve not only tried no add-ons mode but also disabling accelerators, reverting back to default settings, and deleting all but the default search engine. I?ve also tried playing with the advanced settings on searchiImage of issue before and after:ore and after:

This bug is being experienced by almost every user running Windows Internet Explorer 8 Beta 2 and java. Upon exiting a page/window which is currently running java an error pops on the screen saying ?General Exception? then names which applet caused the problem and can give details on the issue. This error also causes the window not to close and it has to be killed manually via the task manager. ?java.lang.NullPointerException: null pData? seems to be the main reason most of the time via the details for the crash. I have tried installing and uninstalling java multiple times. I?ve tried different versions including the most current Java SE 6 Update 7 and even the release candidate Java SE 6 Update 10 RC all with no luck as the error occurs each time. The popup doesn?t appear on the release candidate version but an error log is instead outputted and the window will not close and will have to be killed manually. I?ve also tried older versions with no luck. This happens on both of my machines no matter how I tweak the options, etc. I?ve seen this issue on many forums and such all having the same issue anImage of Java Genera Exception Error in progress:a Exception Error in progress:

After installing IE8B2, Windows Internet Explorer 8 Beta 2 will not start up correctly. Once you would click to start the application it opens for half a second and then quickly closes. I was able to fix by reverting my boot.ini file back to the original via the ?msconfig? run dialog. Either way with a modified ?boot.ini? or not this should not be happening! See the link below for full information and the fix.

My #1 dislike about IE8 Beta 2 is just how many sites I browse to, and find render badly.

Worse still is the 'compatibility view' which in many cases just hasn't fixed sites that render badly in IE8 native mode.

Reminds me of the song by the Pussycat Dolls - When I Grow Up.. But be careful what you wish for cause you just might get it..*

*in reference to people asking Microsoft for a standards compliant browser.

I've encountered some strange bugs in one installation, but no such bug in another installation. Even two different XP installations result in one (so far) problem-free experience, while the other many strange issues pop up. I think this may be an installer issue or something, so certain components and/or settings are installed wrong under certain circumstances. :/

Looks like IE is going to win back from Firefox users.

Going to wait and see if Microsoft delays IE8 to fix bugs (someone suggested IE8 to ship in November?) before I decide if I want IE8 on my PC, later I might see if it's worth switching back to IE from Fx.

Hmm... I can confirm the fouled-up WU page, but my Favorites tabs are where they're supposed to be. They don't have icons on them anymore, but I suspect that's WAD. Find also works as it should, adding an extra bar under the tab bar. I don't use Java so I can't confirm that bug. Have those of you having problems tried the "Reset" button in the Tools dialog?

And I'm using Vista so I can't verify the boot.ini issue either. ;)

Yes I've tried the reset, lol! I've tried just about everything I can to figure this out and I've even been helped my Microsoft who has no idea what is wrong. Also many others are experiencing the same issues as myself with clean install systems! I don't know what is going on but Microsoft needs to do something as this isn't acceptable of a beta which is so far along. it looks like you have skinned your browser, maybe that's the problem?

Skinned my browser? I am using normal Zune theme on an XP system with no browser modifications on IE7 or IE8B2. I don't know what image you are talking about bu perhaps you can be more specific. Otherwise I have tried everything in my technical arsnal and I'm coming out shooting blanks. I think this is simply a software issue and not a system issue.

  • 7 months later...

This missing Favorites Center tabs issue was driving me crazy too but luckily there's a fix for it. Trawling through the web to find a fix for this damned problem, i came across this thread over at the DSLReports forum (which funnily enough, mentions this thread) that points to this fix.

I've tried it and it works. It fixed the Find On Page issue as well. So far i haven't had any side-effects to using the fix, so i think its should be safe to apply.

    • Alpine Linux 3.24 released with support for COSMIC Desktop and other improvements by David Uzondu Alpine Linux 3.24 has been released with updated system packages, including Linux kernel 6.18 and Rust 1.96. The team also added IPv6 support to the system installer, and they introduced automatic serial console configuration for headless setups. System76's COSMIC desktop environment is now available in the community repo. System76 originally started building this DE because its developers found GNOME to be pretty limited. Plus, it did not help that with virtually every GNOME update, the changes broke System76's custom desktop extensions. As for system packages, the Alpine team moved GTK+ 3.0 from the main repository to the community repository due to its legacy status. py3-setuptools has been upgraded to version 82.0.0, while the old pkg_resources module has been completely dropped. The team also removed outdated packages that still relied on py3-six and GTK+ 2.0. In addition to that, libsoup 2 has been removed because the library was affected by multiple security vulnerabilities. If you're a GRUB user, the Alpine Team said that you must manually run the grub-install command with your specific device or EFI options right after upgrading your system, otherwise, your computer may fail to boot properly with the newly updated GRUB 2.14 bootloader. New installations of Alpine Linux now offer an optional path to a /usr-merged directory layout if you set the BOOTSTRAP_USR_MERGED environment variable to 1 before you execute the setup-disk command. If you already run an older installation, you can migrate manually by installing the merge-usr package and executing its binary as the root user. The team recommends this layout to align Alpine with modern Linux standards, though you should verify your custom scripts before making the switch. Alpine Linux is a pretty tiny (~5MB) Linux distro built around musl libc, BusyBox, and OpenRC. It's been around since 2005, comes with its own package manager called Alpine Package Keeper (APK), and is widely used in modern cloud computing and software deployment.
