Internet Explorer 8 Beta 2 - Post your Bugs?

Recommended Posts

In the event that neowinians want to post bugs they encountered in Internet Explorer 8 Beta 2, why not post them here.

To start off, here is a bug that has been around since IE4 (IMO - still not fixed).

Internet Explorer saving .JPG files as .BMP format.

I'm not seeing that. I tried your URL (http://interfacelift.com/wallpaper/downloads/01670_glaciersunrise_2560x1600.jpg) as well as http://www.socksoff.co.uk/00001/page03/Bliss_Like_1600.jpg

When I click "Save Picture as..." the dialog box has ".jpg" selected.

Do you have any addons installed?

Funny. Happens to me in Vista also.

Can someone try to go to:

1) http://interfacelift.com/wallpaper_beta/downloads/date/any/

2) Click Resolution for Glacier Sunrise.

3) Then right click on the wallpaper and Save Image As.

Same result?

Hmm. OK. Thing is, the picture still loads as a .JPG in the address bar. And Fx 'Save As' .JPG.

I can repro it with the steps you listed. Funny thing is when I tried it in Firefox the save as dialog had NO extension and the drop-down had no options. It must be a site problem. I bet the referrer script that redirects from the listing of images is specifying the wrong filetype but the browser displays it anyway.

EDIT: Searching Google for "interfacelift bugs" shows other people reporting the error in other OSes with Firefox.

So I guess we can mark this as an interfacelift problem, and not an IE8 Beta 2 problem. And to think I was ready to report this to MS :p

Heh... I sent an e-mail the site's webmaster, but I wouldn't expect much since according to those Mozilla bug reports it's been doing that for years. :)

I've tried it in 2 different versions of Firefox, Safari and IE7, it only happens in IE7 for me.

And the HTTP headers are fine, it's sending the correct mime-type.

The only thing I can think of, is that it's got XML data inside it (Which should be ok, it's like EXIF data), IE doesn't handle this stuff well (It's possible to write a .png file that runs javascript)

I get different results on IE8 and Firefox, but neither of them are what is expected. IE8 tries to save it as a bitmap and Firefox doesn't prompt with an extension at all. I think maybe IE is trying to compensate for the missing information and assuming BMP.

These are the headers the server is sending for the image file

HTTP/1.1 200 OK

It's sending the proper mime-type, so something else is happening.

I have an unknown object (related to Flash), I can't remove it though.

It's an issue with the cache or something, IE has had it for years.

Try clearing your cache and saving it again.

QFT, it's all IE, nothing to do with OS. Just F5 the page and it will save properly.

Thanks for the help everybody! (Y)

I had hoped that Microsoft would look a bit further into this problem and resolve it.

Either way, an F5 reloads the picture and it's saved correctly.

Small Bug. The button 'X' to stop loading a site, remains enabled after the site has already fully loaded.

Hmm... That explains part of it, but why does it work correctly if I go directly to the image URL? And why does Firefox not prompt with an extension? :)

Running XP Pro SP2 on Virutal machine, and have this problem, Page, Safety, Tools buttons won't work!!!!

Here's a screen. ie8bugxput7.th.jpg

I've mentioned it somewhere else, I think the biggest bug of IE8b2 is its installer. apparent it can mess the browser up in different ways under different circumstances. I think the only way to make sure IE8b2 is correctly installed in a system is to either install it in a fresh new system (even then it's still hard to be sure, but for me at least the two installations on fresh new systems are quite problem-free so far), or use Microsoft's pre-prepared VirtualPC images for testing :/

    • Hello, It would appear so, according to https://finance.yahoo.com/news/how-to-hide-your-home-on-google-maps-apple-maps-204146687.html. Regards, Aryeh Goretsky
    • Hello, The Nvidia Founders Edition 3080 video card is approximately six years old, correct? Have you looked into whether replacement fans are available for it? Perhaps replacing those will improve cooling, especially when combined with cleaning the card's heatsink and replacing the thermal interface materials. Regards, Aryeh Goretsky
    • Hello, While ~104 GB of space may seem generous (at least compared to other e-readers which have 8-32GB), I feel at this price point the device should have a Micro SDXC card slot for expansion, particularly if it allows audio books to be installed and played. I hope to see more reviews of 6" phone-sized e-readers on Neowin in the future. It will be interesting to see how they compare. Regards, Aryeh Goretsky
    • Sandboxie Plus 1.17.8 / Classic 5.72.8 by Razvan Serea Run programs in a sandbox to prevent malware from making permanent changes to your PC. Sandboxie allows you to run your browser, or any other program, so that all changes that result from the usage are kept in a sandbox environment, which can then be deleted later. Sandboxie is a sandbox-based isolation software for 32- and 64-bit Windows NT-based operating systems. It is being developed by David Xanatos since it became open source, before that it was developed by Sophos (which acquired it from Invincea, which acquired it earlier from the original author Ronen Tzur). It creates a sandbox-like isolated operating environment in which applications can be run or installed without permanently modifying the local or mapped drive. An isolated virtual environment allows controlled testing of untrusted programs and web surfing. Sandboxie is available in two flavors Plus and Classic. Both have the same core components, this means they have the same level of security and compatibility. What's different is the user interface the Plus build has a modern Qt based UI which supports all new features that have been added since the project went open source. The Classic build has the old no longer developed MFC based UI, hence it lacks support for modern features, these features can however still be used when manually configured in the Sandboxie.ini. • Hello, Christian Maas' XVI32 is a nice (and very small) hex editor. Speaking of hex editors, many years ago a colleague and I who both worked at Tribal Voice managed to edit a copy of the company's PowWow instant messaging client to make it behave better now that all of its lookup servers and other server-side tech was gone.  The program didn't support NAT (RFC-3022 was introduced in January 2001, the same time Tribal Voice was shuttered), but it still worked okay if you manually set up port-forwarding on your router.  The server at http://powwow.jazy.net/ hosts a copy (usual warnings about downloading and running untrusted code from random internet servers apply). I occasionally use some tools like Funduc Software's Search and Replace and Application Mover when I need to make mass-edits to text-based files or move programs with a hard-coded installation directories, respectively.  When I need to figure out the exact LCD panel inside of a laptop, EnTech Taiwan's Monitor Asset Manager is my go-to tool for that purpose. JD Design's website (now hosted on github.io) has a number of interesting freeware and shareware utilities.  I used to use their TouchPro utility to set the file timestamps on software I was mastering to match its version number (e.g., version 3.00 of a program had all of its files dates set to 3:00AM, and so forth). Karenware has a number of interesting freeware utilities, too. Regards, Aryeh Goretsky
