... to great space/sim games like Freespace 2 or Wing Commander? What about games like the Descent series?

Don't get me wrong, I love a lot of new games, but I feel like I can't get my dose of space shooters nowadays.

Does anyone know of any new games like that?

Descent Freespace was a GREAT game.

I didnt get the game till a couple years after it came out, and the online play was dead.

Well Privateer from the Wing Commanger series has been made open source and re-made (and with it being open-source, natually there are loads of different versions people have made) such as here and here...

Don't forget the patches :D

^No, X-Com is more strategy than anything, it's just that Interceptor had space flight elements, apparently. Still need to play it myself.

Anyways, I'm totally buying all of Descent and Freespace again when GOG launches, I grew up on those games.
