See who's viewing a thread?

Recommended Posts

It's been discussed before, and only the moderators and admins are able to see the members who are viewing a thread. And, I wouldn't want other members to have that feature because of the reason Ricardo has given.

And you get a lot of members posting "Hey, I saw you view my thread. Why didn't you reply? Why, why why?"

What about if members could make themselves private so they can't be seen?

I log in "invisible", and when viewing a thread, moderators see me as an "anonymous user" (or some such term).

I am pretty sure admins and such levels can actually see me, though. :ninja:

That's what I was thinking. It would be abused, especially for flaming and such.

I don't see how it could be used for flaming, but anyone who did manage to start an argument out of it is far too immature to be here anyway.

By default, IPB allows the root admins to see the people who have logged in as anonymous on the online list. No one else can have that access unless Neowin has used a mod to give other groups the privilege as well.

Am i missing something though? you can see what threads people are looking at there.

Not "invisible" people. I don't show up on that list.

But, yeah, if you were obsessed with a particular user, you could just keep viewing their profile page.

Seeing who is viewing any particular thread is similar to but different than seeing what threads people are viewing.

I other forums I visit that sue the IPB software, they have the feature enable to see what users are viewing a particular thread. is this available and can it be turned on?

1. This is a quite large forum, so the server load would be quite large.

2. Flamming towards mod's. eg: people not using using the report function (eg: mods getting pms "i saw you in thread X and its breaking rule Y, please close it") or mods getting flammed for their actions or inaction (eg: "i saw you in thread P and its breaking rule S, why didn't you close it!")
