Don't Expect Elizabeth Banks Back as Betty Brant

Would Elizabeth Banks return as Betty Brant in a fourth and/or fifth "Spider-Man" movie? It doesn't sound like it, as she tells CHUD:

"If it's that small, I probably won't do it. They don't need Betty Brant. It's purely, at this point - and I don't think they see it this way - it's kind of a favor at this point."

David Lindsay-Abaire to Pen Spidey 4!

Playwright David Lindsay-Abaire (upcoming Inkheart), who won a Pulitzer in 2007 for his drama "Rabbit Hole," is in final negotiations to write Spider-Man 4 for Columbia Pictures, says The Hollywood Reporter.

Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire are back as director and star, respectively, as are series producers Laura Ziskin and Avi Arad. Kirsten Dunst also is expected to return for the latest movie featuring the Marvel Comics character.

Plot details are under lock and key.

James Vanderbilt previously wrote a draft of Spider-Man 4.

Lindsay-Abaire's "Rabbit Hole," which starred Cynthia Nixon and Tyne Daly, hit the Broadway stage in 2006 and won four Tonys, including best play. The writer also is known for the play "Fuddy Meers."

Sam Raimi revealed his pick for the villain for Spider-Man 4 in the latest issue of Empire Magazine.

?I like it in the Marvel comics when Spider-Man fights Morbius,? said Raimi. ?He?s really cool. A vampire! I like that combination of superhero plus supernatural.?

As /Film reader Christopher M (who submitted the story) points out, it might make sense to use him along with The Lizard since both characters ?use the same technology but have different animals involved in their research? one having blended with a lizard the other a vampire bat.?

Carnage deserves his own, Morbius and Lizard would be nice for the 4th. Carnage for the 5th would be fantastic, maybe bring back Venom for that one as well. But it'd have to be much darker than the first 3. Carnage is a sick, twisted, psychotic freak. As much as I love the character I think he could only exist in his true form in the Nolan-verse.

Carnage will hopefully make it into his own movie, with maybe venom helping spider-man, since spider-man was never able to take out carnage alone...

But eh, i really could care less for any other story now with spider-man that doesnt have venom or carnage.

Multiple villains in 1 movie isn't a bad thing if done right. Dark Knight is a perfect example. The key is linking them together, instead of being completely separate. Spiderman 3 failed here big time. Another important piece would have the villains interact with each other. I'd love to see 2 bad guys duking it out.

Interesting decision about choosing Morbius as a villain, I like it. I hope they're going to make him as awesome as possible. Maybe like the Morbius from Ultimate Spiderman? Or the version from Legion Of Monsters: Morbius?

@Xero: That would be awesome if 2 villains would fight each other. They can pull it if by using 2 villains but they have to do it the right way. That means they should do it differently then how they did it in Spiderman 3.

Lol, I think Spiderman series should learn something from the Batman series and learn to aim their movies at a, well rather older audience. Make the movie a bit darker and more mature then I'm pretty sure it would be a big hit. Although wrapping Spidey's comical character may be difficult.. it still would make it better than the previous three movies.

Am I really the only one on the planet who enjoyed SM3? Was I the only one to appreciate the philosophical depth? The self examination? Should that be introspection?

I know it's from a comic book but that is one of the oldest, most venerable comic books in its genre: I actually read it when I was a kid. Perhaps that is the problem, I grew old and I expect the whole thing to mature . . . . nah! I never matured so why would anyone?

I remember arguing with her as we left the cinema (she rubbished it like everyone else) and I am sure I said it was good to see at least one "Marvel/DC" movie franchise take a deeper line on characterisation 'cause that would probably ensure a little longevity for the series.

And NO (not if reboot means what I think it means).

Multiple villains in 1 movie isn't a bad thing if done right. Dark Knight is a perfect example.

Dark Knight would have been amazing with only one Villian (not counting those mob guys). I would love to get rid of those stupid scenes and see the Joker doing more crazy attacks. Two Face added nothing and him changing from good to evil made no sense.

As for Spiderman.. 2 and 3 were both pretty **** poor. :\

Script is coming this summer!

Sam Raimi told SCI FI Wire that David Lindsay-Abaire's script for Spider-Man 4 should be ready by summer.

Raimi said the film has to make the announced May 6, 2011 release date. "We have to make the release date, and on all of these pictures, the 'Spider-Man' films--and I'm sure it's the same as with many of the other bigger-budgeted films--they have release dates far in advance of a screenplay," he said. "So it's about getting it ready the best you can in time for the first day of production. That's what we've always done, and that's what we'll try to do again."

The helmer also told Empire magazine he will have full control over the fourth installment - something he didn't have on the third. "They really gave me a tremendous amount of control on the first two films, actually," he said. "But then there were different opinions on the third film and I didn't really have creative control, so to speak."

He added that "The best way for me to move forward on films, is that I've got to be the singular voice that makes the creative choices on the film. I love Spider-Man so much that I'd like to continue telling Spider-Man stories. But only under those circumstances where I think I can honour him."

Sam Raimi Talks Spider-Man 4

SCI FI Wire chatted with Spider-Man 4 director Sam Raimi, who said that he's meeting soon with Kirsten Dunst to talk about her reprising the role of Mary Jane Watson. "I think she would like to. But I don't want to speak on behalf of her," he said.

He was also asked if the recent darker and edgier superhero movies will influence the fourth installment. "I hope we don't react to these very good and sometimes bad superhero movies around us. I hope that we just [look] ever deeper into the truth of who Peter Parker really is?as a human being and the unique character, and that we celebrate that, which is a lot of the reason I want to make this next picture. I still believe I have an understanding of Peter Parker as the character that I have not quite put onto the screen yet," he said.

Dark Knight would have been amazing with only one Villian (not counting those mob guys). I would love to get rid of those stupid scenes and see the Joker doing more crazy attacks. Two Face added nothing and him changing from good to evil made no sense.

While I'm all for a completely Joker movie I didn't think the others watered it down or took away from it. You said yourself Two Face adding nothing so what did it matter :p Btw, it did make sense! Watch it again, Harvey believed that even the people he was fighting with turned on him, they killed the one person he loved. He went on a rampage after that as he felt he had nothing left to lose. When people reach their lowest points you can't expect them to be all that they can be. You can expect them to take their aggression out on others :)

Lovely, nothing says good cinema like rushing a film into production to meet a release date. Shame Sony is quite the bitch when it comes to movies. If they had more pull like Marvel has with their other movies they could delay the release and have a better film, Iron Man 2 comes to mind. Rami seems to think it's the movies job to meet the release, it's the opposite really. Movie first, release second, I smell disaster but I hope I'm wrong as I do enjoy the Spidey films. While they aren't are great as others I've always been a spiderman fan since a kid so I can't hate them.

Sam Raimi Teases Morbius as Villain For Spider-Man 4

CHUD have been lucky enough to receive a clip of Sam Raimi talking to FearNET about the villain for his fourth Spider-Man film. While Raimi?s reaction isn?t so plain and simple that we can take it as a 100% guarantee of the character they have in waiting in the wings it does make one player a clear front runner. You might argue that Raimi is playing games with us here, but that doesn?t seem to be his style at all.

The FearNET interviewer asks Raimi about the possible role in Spider-Man 4 for a vampire - by which they mean Morbius, I?m sure. Raimi then responds in a deliberately mannered style, ironically turning his ?What? I don?t know anything about that? into a virtual wink at the camera. You won?t fail to get what he?s driving at with the tone he uses.

Raimi then goes on to discuss the appeal of vampires and his reading of the archetype is certainly interesting. He?s talking about vampires in a very traditional sense, with reference to bat transformations, crucifixes and garlic as well as the sensual nature of a vampire attack. Not the typical nemesis for a costumed superhero.

The early appearances of Morbius in the comics were interwoven with a storyline featuring The Lizard, following a plot which suits the progressing arc of Dr. Curt Connors in the film series. I?m now as near to convinced as I ever could be that we will have Morbius and The Lizard confirmed for key roles in the film before the end of the year. Mary Jane Watson, on the other hand? I guess so, but there?s definitely something up there. Is Kirsten Dunst playing hardball in contract negotiations?

When Raimi?s Drag Me to Hell opens next week, we?ll all have a current reminder of his skill with the horror genre. Folding vampires into Spider-Man might be a slightly off-mainstream play but I think there?s every chance Raimi and screenwriter David Lindsay-Abaire willl pull it off with flair, giving us something accessible as well as smart and rich and full of colour and depth. In other words, I?m thinking Spider-Man 4 could end up being the next? well, Spider-Man 2.

    • Waymo recalls self-driving software after cars enter closed freeway work zones by Paul Hill Waymo, the self-driving car maker owned by Alphabet – the parent company of Google –, has recalled some of its fifth-generation Automated Driving Systems (ADS). It did so after some of its cars drove through closed construction zones. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the affected vehicles were capable of driving through a closed freeway construction zone and continuing to drive at speed. The listing on the NHTSA website says that Waymo is currently developing a solution to fix this issue, but in the meantime, freeway driving is being restricted. Waymo will update its ADS software so that vehicles can detect when they can avoid entering construction zones. According to the Safety Recall Report, on April 20, 2026, Waymo’s Field Safety Committee began meetings reviewing an event from April 11, 2026, and five events from April 19, 2026, where Waymo’s autonomous vehicles didn’t recognize and drove past ramp closure signs into the pre-planned freeway construction zones. This took place in Phoenix, Arizona. Separately, on May 18, 2026, seven Waymo vehicles entered freeway lanes with active construction in the San Francisco Bay Area by driving between cones that were placed to show the lane was closed. On the back of both of these events, Waymo restricted freeway driving until it could address the issue. In June, Waymo’s Safety Board reviewed the issue and additional information related to ADS performances around construction zones; then, as a result, it decided to conduct a recall. This development is not good for Waymo as it adds to a growing list of technical hiccups its cars have experienced. Ultimately, it will lead to more scrutiny from lawmakers around the world who will be more cautious about letting autonomous vehicles on their roads without tighter regulation. For readers in areas where Waymo operates, does this news make you more wary about stepping into one of these vehicles?
