No Gwen Stacy in Spider-Man 4?

ComingSoon.net talked to Bryce Dallas Howard, who said she has not been contacted about reprising the role of Gwen Stacy in Spider-Man 4. Here's a clip:

Q: Will your character Gwen have a big role in "Spider-Man 4?"

Bryce Dallas Howard: Oh goodness! I don't know. I mean, it was really made clear to me when we all did "Spider-Man 3" that it was entirely possible that a character could come back or a character could not and this could be just a specific plotline to that film because there's so many stories in the comic book series and you want to pack as much in as possible so it's truly up to Sam, up to, you know, the writers and the people who have done such an amazing job protecting that franchise and choosing the best storylines for audiences and I'm a fan first. I had an incredible time working with them but more than anything what I want is for that franchise to just continue to kick butt and to really appease the really really really loyal fans, so, including myself.

IESB and MovieMoron (not the most trust-inspiring name there, guys) are both reporting that, in addition to the working title being the execrable Spider-M4n, there?s tension in the Spidey 4 camp and that development is currently stalled. The root seems to be disagreement over the villain; Raimi is said to favor the Vulture, while Sony is said to favor anyone else. No surprise there, as the Vulture, even if played by John Malkovich as rumored, has never been the most dynamic guy in the hero?s rogues gallery.

Spider-Man 4 Unlikely To Make 2011 Release Date Due to Script Problems?

Last month, IESB reported a rumor claiming that Spider-Man 4 had been put on hold due to disputes over an incomplete script. According to the report, director Sam Raimi was at odds with the studio over who the big villain of the fourth film should be (Raimi is fighting for Vulture), and that several department heads working on the production, internally referred to as SPIDER-M4N, has been notified that the film had been put on ?an indefinite hold.? Sony was quick to issue a statement denying the report, and MTV?s sources claimed that a break/hiatus for the Holidays was always planned, and the production would resume ?early next year?.

Nikki Finke, who is always on top of the Mrvel news stories and obviously has some high up sources within the company, has confirmation that production was indeed shut down on the film, despite Sony?s denial to the contrary.

She reprints an email that went out on December 11th 2009 to the Spider-Man 4 special effects crew which says:

?We were just notified that our schedule is pushing. We will NOT be starting as planned. I?m terribly sorry for this news, and I hope this email reaches you in time to find other options. We do not know how long we are pushing, and we will not know until mid-January. By mid-January, we will be told how long the push is, whether it be 2 weeks, 2 months, or something else. The studio has every intention of making the movie, but we no longer have a confirmed start date. Again, I?m terribly sorry, but Sam Raimi has story issues [that] need to be resolved before we are ready to shoot.?

According to Finke, Raimi hates the lastest draft of the script and they are now waiting on a new version from screenwriter Alvin Sargent, who worked on both Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man 3. What this means is that it is very unlikely that Sony will be able to deliver the film to theaters on the announced May 11th, 2011 release date. Apparently Sony has earmarked a new July 2011 release date, but that might not stick if they don?t come to an agreement on a screenplay soon. Sony was hoping to begin filming in late March/early April, but now there is no date on the calendar. And to top it all off, the Sony bigwigs have apparently nixed Anne Hathaway after they realized her pricetag was too high, and they don?t really need another big name Hollywood star to sell the film.

Wtf are they doing?! It has been 3 years from the previous release and they can't make it next year!? Pathetic!

I know :( it makes me sad I need more Spidey in my DVD collection!

Malkovich Confirms Vulture Role in Spider-Man 4

With all the rumors and speculation about Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 4, whether or not it will make its scheduled May 5, 2011 release date and why it has run into production problems, it's come out in the wash that John Malkovich was indeed up for the role of the Vulture, Raimi's choice of villain for the fourth movie, which was first broken by Movieline a month ago.

Malkovich was interviewed by an Italian sports show called "Quelli Che il Calcio" and he was asked not only about whether he had been approached to play the Vulture but also about the production delays. The fine folks at the Italian web site Bad Taste have graciously provided an English summation of what was said on the show:

"When conductor Simona Ventura asked him about his role of Vulture in the movie, he not only didn't deny his involvement, but confirmed that he's waiting for the final script to be sent to him, and that the movie has been delayed. He also hopes that shooting will begin as soon as possible."

Some may remember that Malkovich was the alternate choice to play the Green Goblin in the first "Spider-Man" movie, a role that went to his Shadow of the Vampire co-star Willem Dafoe, so it has always made perfect sense that Raimi would be interested in him to play a Spidey villain. The question is whether Sony will agree to the lesser Spider-Man villain for such an important tentpole franchise.

Sony Rebooting Spider-Man

Peter Parker is going back to high school when the next Spider-Man hits theaters in the summer of 2012.

Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios announced today they are moving forward with a film based on a script by James Vanderbilt that focuses on a teenager grappling with both contemporary human problems and amazing super-human crises.

The new chapter in the "Spider-Man" franchise produced by Columbia, Marvel Studios and Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin, will have a new cast and filmmaking team. Spider-Man 4 was to have been released in 2011, but had not yet gone into production.

"A decade ago we set out on this journey with Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire and together we made three 'Spider-Man' films that set a new bar for the genre. When we began, no one ever imagined that we would make history at the box-office and now we have a rare opportunity to make history once again with this franchise. Peter Parker as an ordinary young adult grappling with extraordinary powers has always been the foundation that has made this character so timeless and compelling for generations of fans. We're very excited about the creative possibilities that come from returning to Peter's roots and we look forward to working once again with Marvel Studios, Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin on this new beginning," said Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment.

"Working on the 'Spider-Man' movies was the experience of a lifetime for me. While we were looking forward to doing a fourth one together, the studio and Marvel have a unique opportunity to take the franchise in a new direction, and I know they will do a terrific job," said Sam Raimi.

Looks like Spiderman 4 is cancelled and they're going to go with a reboot.

Aw holy heck, this is a terrible thing! Focus on teenager Parker?!? Maguire was THE best guy for the role, and now they want to focus on some teenage dram bull crap? What a joke.... we already had a teenage Spider-Man, 'twas the first one. Such idiots...

I know this is how I feel, you move the story forward only to go back and I am sure I was not the only one looking forward to seeing Lizard in SM4 which was sure to happen....oh well it seems if the story sucks go back to the root which is the origins *sigh*

Oh man. This is such a blow. Spiderman 3 wasn't the best of the series but I'll miss Raimi and Maguire. Seriously...I just don't know if they'll be able to recreate or top what Raimi did with Spiderman and Spiderman 2. It simply won't feel the same.

This isn't like the X-Men First Class flick which could serve as a prequel and we may still have a fourth film with the original cast one day. (Doubtful, I know.) We already saw Parker as a teenager so we know this is definitely a new series. It saddens me :(.

Spidey 2 and 3 blew. First was the best and Dafoe helped that big time. Although the origin story almost always wins over sequels. I'm happy to see a second shot at it. However I was hoping for a more mature Peter Parker, back to school I'm going to have to cross that off the list. New cast could be good, other than Tobey/Dafoe I disliked all casting. It'd also be nice if they kept it closer to the comics. Proper Spidey-Venom suit, no stupid snow bordering green goblin.

While it seems a little early for a reboot I hope it works out and has a less kiddy feel the others had. And a shot to see someone else's vision on the villains which were embarrassing in Raimi's, at least I thought so.
