LOS ANGELES - Tobey Maguire's web-slinging days are behind him.

The 34-year-old actor and "Spider-Man" director Sam Raimi will not be returning to the superhero franchise next year. Instead, Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios announced Monday that a new "Spider-Man" film based on a script by James Vanderbilt that focuses on Peter Parker in high school would debut in the summer of 2012 with a new cast and filmmaking team.

"I am so proud of what we accomplished with the 'Spider-Man' franchise over the last decade," Maguire said in a statement Monday. "Beyond the films themselves, I have formed some deep and lasting friendships. I am excited to see the next chapter unfold in this incredible story."

The announcement of a reboot comes after reports that "Spider-Man 4" production stalled amid script revisions. The original "Spider-Man 4" release date seemed unlikely last week when Paramount Pictures announced that "Thor," another big-screen Marvel superhero adaptation, had hammered out the same May 6, 2011, release date as the fourth Spidey installment.

"Working on the 'Spider-Man' movies was the experience of a lifetime for me," Raimi, who directed all three "Spider-Man" films, also said in a statement Monday. "While we were looking forward to doing a fourth one together, the studio and Marvel have a unique opportunity to take the franchise in a new direction, and I know they will do a terrific job."

Maguire said in an interview last week that there was "great stuff in terms of story and script" for the fourth chapter and the plan was to still release the film in 2011. He also said he had specific ideas about the evolution of the character on the big screen.

"Thor" experienced its own upheaval over the weekend. Stuart Townsend departed the adaptation because of creative differences, according to two AP sources close to the production. Townsend, who had been cast as an ally of the Norse god, was replaced by Joshua Dallas.

The three "Spider-Man" films continually snared moviegoers, earning over $1.1 billion combined. After glowing reaction to the first two films, critical response to "Spider-Man 3" was so-so. Raimi said he was undecided about returning to the franchise after the third movie but later said he didn't like thinking about somebody else making the Peter Parker story.

Sony said it would have more news about the next "Spider-Man" movie in coming weeks.

Yeah it's all a bit quick really to cancel SM4 after he was talking about it and to add of course just yesterday/saturday Malkovich named as Vulture!

Anne Hathaway was in "talks" to be Hardy and.. the "Vultures". They said that they dumped her because she was "too expensive". Thank god. Well I guess it doesn't matter now.

Maybe 2012 really is the end of the world? :p seems far to early for a reboot but still, seems to be flavor of the month at the moment :/

What other reboots have there been? Other than Karate Kid...which we have known about for a while now that it was going to happen.

I think they need to stay away from actress' who aren't redheads it really destroyed Kirstin Dunst's looks.

Hathaway CAN act, I just don't see her as Hardy.

Well Tobey wasn't the best peter parker. But i've got a funny feeling they're going to go downhill with it, think spiderman 3-d they put on MTV was it? Or that other cartoonish ugly ass version on cartoonetwork :x Just the words "high shool years" I can see it already

Xero was mentioning on msn earlier to me what about the Venom film they had planned?, is that now ****ed?

I was just about to post that and ask about that. :p I hope that Tobey is kept for the Venon films...if they continue with it.

Also, why not Summer?! Who cares jow M-J looked like in the comics! We need a change and Summer is there for us! :D

Yeah or at least make it with the new story in tow so we can have Carnage for the first spidey reboot :p

The next Spiderman Movie in going to be an epic failure. Who the hell is gonna want to see a drama about Peter Parker in school? Come on Sony.

Let's not forget that Marvel plays a part in this also. It's not all Sony.

Actually this fits perfectly in Disney's plan. They bought Marvel, so make Spiderman a teen hero played by their very own Zac Efron...with Miley Cyrus and her wigs as M-J, and the Jonas brothers as the bad guys! One for every movie.

Does anyone not feel that if they did, say an Avengers move, in the same style of the Final Fantasy CGI movie they could make a TON of money? I would think making animation would also make it a lot cooler for comic fans since you can have a better visual of their special powers.

      That is the thing, how many of these people don't realise they are using AI? If they use Google Search they have no choice but to use AI. So yes, maybe half of American adults do use and I expect a lot of Uk adults do to, but I bet most of them don't realise it. Myself, i avoid the rubbish.
