"The Amazing Spiderman" (2012)

Here?s some humorous fan activism for your Sunday afternoon. Activism that fans of both NBC?s Community and the recently released (to DVD) comedy Mystery Team will enjoy. A campaign has begun on Twitter to get Donald Glover cast as the next Spider-Man. As we reported last week, the list of candidates to play Peter Parker in the upcoming franchise reboot has been narrowed to five names. None of them are Don Glover. This has forced fans to take it to the streets ? the streets of Twitter.

The goal (I suppose) is to get the Twitter hash-tag #donald4spiderman trending. This began when io9?s Marc Bernardin wrote an interesting and pointed piece about why The last thing Spider-Man should be is another white guy, followed by several commenters suggesting the Community star as the best choice for Peter Parker. It?s hard to argue with the logic of either Bernardin or the io9 commenters ? a unique and fresh take on Spider-Man would be interesting, and Glover is a very good young actor. Remember when I suggested making Spider-Man a period piece ? setting in the 1960s? Yes, something new and different, please. Sadly, it probably won?t happen. Sony Pictures seems intent on repeating the same Spider-Man formula, in 3D.

You can track the movement of Donald for Spider-Man at the Donald for Spider-Man Facebook Page. Or head over to Twitter and follow the search term #donald4spiderman. We?ll be following, encouraging and promoting the side campaign of Alison Brie as Mary Jane Watson, as well.

looks like Jamie Bell might be Spiderman!

In the last twenty-four hours, Bleeding Cool had received repeated reports that Sony have settled on their new Spider-Man. And he is Jamie Bell, English actor, star of Billy Elliot with another major comc-book lead under his belt, playing Tintin in the upcoming Spielberg/Jackson/Moffat/Cornish/Wright CGI adaptation of the popular comic.

Me wants Toby back. None of these candidates looks good enough to be Spiderman.

I thought Toby was absolutely horrible as Spider-Man, personally. I didn't feel like he fit the comic book mold at all -- he wasn't quick-witted, and he seemed to keep that geeky mentality even when he donned the suit, unlike the comic books, cartoons and everything else Spider-Man.

Jamie Bell not there yet it seems as a new name enters the frame!

According to The L.A Times Aaron Johnson (Kick-Ass) and Anton Yelchin (Star Trek, Terminator Salvation) are on Sony?s list to play Peter Parker in the Spider-Man reboot, bringing the total number of potential Parkers to 7.

Jamie Bell, Alden Ehrenreich, Frank Dillane, Andrew Garfield and Josh Hutcherson are all apparently in contention, and last week we heard that Jamie Bell may have landed the role, however it seems Sony still hasn?t chosen yet.

Hope he get's it! Brilliant actor! Loved him in Charlie Bartlett (Y)

Josh Hutcherson is on the short list for the role of Peter Parker in Marc Webb's upcoming Spider-Man reboot, the actor confirmed to Movieline today.

"[i}t?s kind of exciting..." the actor said in an interview, "...to see how much excitement there is already built up about it. I?m really excited for the restarting either way. People are like, 'Did you read the comics growing up?' No, not really, but the first movie came out when I was nine years old! I grew up watching those movies."

Other, still-rumored contenders for the part include Jamie Bell, Frank Dillane, Alden Ehrenreich, Andrew Garfield, Aaron Johnson and Anton Yelchin.

This is a pretty small update to the story about the casting of Sony?s upcoming Spider-Man, to be directed in 3D by Marc Webb. We?ve had one major leaked actor shortlist, which was later augmented with a couple more names. And despite rumors that Sony liked any given actor over the others, the casting process is ongoing.

A new report says that Sony has shot screen tests with most of the names on the list, and is still working with Webb to choose a lead so that the rest of the film can be cast around him.

Deadline lists the actors who have tested and are now actively being considered. Jamie Bell, Anton Yelchin, Aaron Johnson, Andrew Garfield, Alden Ehrenreich and Logan Lerman (whose name seemingly just can?t be cut out of the Spider-Man talk, no matter what happens) have all tested.

That accounts for all the shortlist names but two: Frank Dillane and Josh Hutcherson. Dillane reportedly didn?t test, because he plans to go to school at London?s Royal Academy of Dramatic Art this coming fall. So he?s probably out of the running. Hutcherson isn?t mentioned at all by Deadline, so we don?t know what his status is with Sony, but he?d always seemed like an outside chance due to other commitments. Just a week ago he said that he was still part of the mix for Spider-Man, but that the Journey to the Center of the Earth sequel would shoot in October, which likely conflicts directly with Spider-Man.

Also mentioned as being in the running, but possibly not having tested, is Michael Angarano, who is certainly in the same age bracket as the other actors, and is skilled. He also seems like an outside chance, but can?t be ruled out yet.

There's a very big rumor going around today that actor Josh Hutcherson has fully landed the role of Peter Parker in Marc Webb's Spider-Man reboot. The news comes from Blue Sky Disney, which seems a bit odd, but they state: "word from my Bothans is that Sony has settled on Journey to the Center of the Earth's Josh Hutcherson as the newly, high school bound Peter Parker." Apparently the execs "decided that Hutcherson was the right fit for the role and an offer was made and has been accepted." Can we believe that or is still too early to tell? Blue Sky usually has solid Disney scoops, but I'm not sure if I'm totally sold on this.

To make things even more confusing about casting, ComingSoon actually spoke directly with Hutcherson recently and he totally played off this new like it was still far from ever becoming official. "I think a lot of people are auditioning and talking about it, so it's an honor to be considered on the same list with some of these actors that I'm up against." When asked if he's still a top contender, this was answer: "I really don't know what's going on with everything right now? It would be an honor to play that role, it's a big thing, it's a total game changer." Indeed it would be. We don't know how old that interview is compared to Blue Sky's report, but it would certainly be interesting to see Hutcherson, currently age 17, as the new Peter Parker.

Oh and you're wondering about the villain? Well, at the end of their story about Hutcherson, Blue Sky also dropped this little tidbit: "Now I wonder who'll be cast as the Lizard? Whoops, I mean, the villain?" If we are to believe that they're source is correct about Hutcherson, it sounds like they may have also heard that the villain will be Lizard in this, which may make sense considering Dr. Connors was one of his professors and this takes place mainly focused on him in high school.

And The New Spider-Man Is...

The next-gen web-slinger has been cast!

Enough speculation already. Andrew Garfield has been officially cast as the new Spider-Man in Sony's upcoming 3D reboot, due to hit screens on July 3, 2012.

The new film will begin production in early December, directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt. Laura Ziskin and Avi Arad will produce.

Garfield (The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus) is one of a few names that have been thrown around to take over the role. The list previously included Josh Hutcherson, Jamie Bell (Jumper), Anton Yelchin (Star Trek), Aaron Johnson (Kick-Ass), Alden Ehrenreich (Tetro) and Logan Lerman (Percy Jackson). But all of them can stop practicing their web slinging, as Garfield has beaten them all out.

The selection of Garfield was revealed at a press event in Cancun, Mexico for international journalists attending a media tour promoting upcoming films from Sony Pictures Entertainment. We now have photos and video from the announcement

Hm... I'm really curious to see what happens with the next Spider-Man flick though. I hope it's good.

Though shooting for 3D concerns me a bit, as I don't like when they rely on something like that... But I guess I'll see how it turns out.

I'm fine with the choice, but really... his age and playing a high school character? He doesn't seem that young in anything he's done so far.

I have to agree. Logan Lerman I thought was a better choice.
