HTC Touch Diamond Worth it? (+Plan and stuff)

Recommended Posts

Hey, I'm currently looking to replace my current "Basic" Phone (Nokia 6275i) with a more potent device, maybe a Smart Phone.

I'm currently looking at the HTC Touch Diamond provided by Telus in Canada.

The device cost $150 for a 3 Year contract. The interesting part of the offer is the contract, for $50 I get 200m/Daytime, unlimited nighttime, unlimited income anytime, 10 Canadian unlimited numbers (Talk, SMS, MMS), cherry on the cake: UNLIMITED INTERNET (As long I don't use it as a modem).

Next to others carriers like Rogers that normal Data plans cost $15 for 2MB, $120 for 2GB (This doesn't include the voice plan) it's look like a dream...

But I'm a bit scared, 3 years is long with the same damn phone...

Is it a good phone that will last 3 years?

Obviously in 3 years it will be outdated, yet it will be still good?

Btw, it's not the "common" Diamond with the ugly back... It's a more stylish version:

(Other phones available with the same contract: BlackBerry Curve, Moto Q 9c, HTC S720 ($50), BlackBerry Pearl (0$), BlackBerry 8703e ($0))

I have the HTC Touch Pro, whcih is very similar, its a beautiful phone, the UI is very nice and easy to use.

I bought mine sim free from a HTC supplier and just put my sim into it, I would not want to be trapped in a contract for 3 years.

My answer is, yes to the phone, no to the contract, perhaps you can make it shorter, but have to pay a little towards the handset ? 18 months is a long enough contract, 3 years shouldnt even be allowed in my opinion.

your rogers data quote is wrong, currently they offer 6gb for $30 on pda/smartphones (tethering included)

but yeah, the diamond (or in telus/bell cdma case, the "Victor", the more stylish one) .. this smartphone is great, and i would highly recommend it (one of telus's best phones atm, until the pro comes) + telus unlimited on device data for $15 is great. (btw, i think ur plan offer is kinda expensive, you can get the same for less or more features for that price . .. check out the telus area at howardforums.com for much more info.. (i have a telus plan, that offer is a rip off))

will it last 3 yrs?.... sure it will ... but tech changes fast , you will likely upgrade again before then (i personally seem to upgrade annually, you can chg features/phones anytime)

i personally wont sign 3yrs... you can negotiate better plans/features, and still only need to sign 1-2yrs.

3 years? Hell no. By the WM7 will be out (which to me is the "make or break" for Windows Mobile). A LOT is going to change in the next 3 years with mobile devices - the market is hotting up like never before.

I got a HTC Victor last week in the shape of T-Mobile Compact IV. After I had managed to debrand it and flash it with the standard HTC firmware I can say that I love it - it's the best Windows Mobile phone I have had the pleasure to own but the standard battery is not very good. The Telus one comes with the extended battery which makes it heavier and fatter but I would kill to have that battery right now!

HTC have done about as good a job as could have been done to cover up an O/S which isn't very good to use without a stylus and have created something which can be used with the fingers alone. The HTC soft keyboard is amazing (I particularly like the compact QWERTY) and I am surprised how easy it is to text with.

I would not buy one of these on a 3 year contract, because it will be well out of date in about 18 months. Windows Mobile 7 is due soon, but I think an upgrade will be available as the phone has a large ROM capacity.

About the OS, I'm sure that they will bring Android on the Diamond soon. It's already working on the Touch.

The Omni doesn't interest me. I saw a video comparison on the Diamond, Omnia and iPhone and only the Diamond interest me. I don't mind the Stylus, it's better than a Thumb Optical mice on a phone in my point of view.

As for "Unlimited" it's good for 2GB and up for sure, I asked, as long it's "Fair Use" it's ok. All I want is to not care about the time I pass browsing the web, IMing, updating stuff (RSS, eMails, Weather) and I will possibility stream music with ORB some time.

But I just checked and Rogers do have the 6GB/$30, I need to look into this, but Rogers don't have lot of phones and I HATE the iPhone (Because of iTune, limited apps (Must be get trough AppStore) and limited functionality).

I will post on that HowardForum thing, and will try to call Telus, but I doubt I will get a SmartPhone under $150 with a 1 or 2 Yr contract.

  • 2 weeks later...

Until the end of September you can get 6GB for $30/month, with tethering allowed, from Rogers. Not quite as good as the Telus student plan, price wise, but you're allowed to do VOIP and any app with it, as long as it's not a dedicated wireless modem. The Telus unlimited internet plan has a TOS that disallows "abusive" apps.

    • And none of them have a "notchless" 3:2 OLED screen, for which I was always willing to pay more.
