Ubuntu Taskbar like Mac

Recommended Posts

Ok this might sound weird but i am going to try to explain it the best i can..

On a Mac no matter what program you are in the Menu bar is on the Finder bar. (File, Edit, View, ETC...) is there a way on Ubuntu to do the same thing so that programs will have it on the Taskbar (thing with the menu, clock, icons, etc...) instead of in the programs themselves.

No like in a Mac when you have an application open the (File, Edit, View,ect...) menus are on the task/finder bar. i want to be able to do that on Ubuntu when i have an application open.

In this image you see the task/finder bar at the top with file edit and such on it i was wondering if it was possible to do that with Ubuntu.

I was not sure if there was an applet that could simply be added to the Panel like the so many there already are.

i looked at the Mac4lin thing and it did not have anything that i was talking about it in however it does make it visually look like mac. What i am trying to do is get it to do something that i have only seen in mac.

I remember when I was customising my Feisty install, the Howto I was reading had a section on this but it was really complex and I didn't bother. However, it definitely is possible, just search around for OS X Ubuntu theme and stuff.

I know there is a patch for gnome to do this. I have seen and used it. But it was buggy. And this was a long time ago, so I don't know if it still exists.

Actually I took a second and used google and came up with this: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/global_menu. I knew I saw it before. There you go, but use it at your own risk.

  • 5 months later...

Just installed gnome2-globalmenu and it works well (except for displaying firefox's menu).

Yeah, i've had this installed at some point too, it's not quite done yet, and some applications don't work. Not ready for prime time yet imo.

I tried it once and it removed tons of packages. Somehow, Ubuntu was still running alright so I did not restart and had Synaptic reinstall the packages and get rid of globalmenu. You can try it, but don't get your hopes up. Mine looked fine without it anyway. Below is Ubuntu with Mac4Lin, AWN and some other customized stuff. I made it so that it boots up looking like a Mac, login looks like mac, fonts look like mac, pointer, firefox, pretty much everything you can do.
