What you mean is, 'the proper French spelling' is cheque.

It's a French word and the English language is made up of French and other languages from around the world.

Loved the guy who wrote that he "says" cheque but not check. XD

And yes, this just in: Different dialects and regions have slight variations of the same language. Shocking, I know. You may as well mock the British for saying "boot" (an item you put your feet in) vs. a "trunk" (a large storage container). Or how some Canadians say "aboot" for "about."
