Neowin & Double Standards!

Recommended Posts

Okay, I am getting really tired of the double standards on this site. When I post something that is already been posted -- however I do not know this at the time -- people start posting "Already posted" and links to the earlier post, my posting gets closed. But when I mention it like I did on the following story:

China running out of IP addresses

Which I posted about yesterday:

CNNIC: China's Internet Will Be Short Of IP Addresses Soon

And, when I mention that fact in the the story that was posted my post in that story gets deleted!

See, double standards!

You're not reading what I said...I posted about China running out of IP addresses yesterday...there was no posting about it at all. But, when I mention that fact in the story that got posted to the front page my posting seems to be getting deleted!

https://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=673540

it is there with zero replies @2nd page of breaking news nobody deleted it or anything

so what the problem again ??

and i doubt the news in front page have anything to do with forum news

It helps to do a search when you post a news item. There's a chance it was already posted.

Seems to me like I read what you said just fine. You said your postings are closed because you post a duplicate article.

I don't think staff explanation is needed.

The Canadian needs to say what the problem is. His claim that his post/thread was removed is not true. What is to explain?

The fact that what he posted in Back Page News has been separately posted on the Front Page? It happens all the time. Or is there whining involved because he wasn't given credit? I doubt it, as it is no big deal, and has happened to me.

If The Canadian wants credited articles on the Front Page, Neowin provides a "submit to newsdesk" link to submit your news article to the team for consideration to be posted on the Front Page.

In short: No double standard. Nothing to explain.

He didn't complain that his thread was deleted.

he complained that his post in the duplicate thread made by someone else, where he said it was a duplicate was deleted.

that's what I got from reading the OP anyway.

Ahhh... It seems he is complaining about the Front Page News item, quite likely IN the FPN article comments. And it may be these complaint comments he posted in FPN that have been deleted.

I don't think he has been around Neowin enough to know yet that FPN is a separate section from BPN (which is, essentially, the forums).

Not a problem.

Complaining about the separation being there, and posting complaints in FPN is not the solution. Nor is accusing staff of "double standards" or other nefarious intent, when this is just merely how the site is organized.

The owner of this site wants to see if we can hit 8 000 000 posts by a certain time, (I am not sure when that is supposed to be!) Some people are making up to 1000 posts in less than two weeks, in other words pure spam! Add up all the ?lols? and ?FTW's? and the like and you get a whole lot of nothing! Why, I would like to know is it always such a big bloody deal when duplicate or similar posts are made? It is, in my humble opinion, not much different to the pure drivel that gets spewed out by some people on this site! Can these posts/threads not just be merged! Some posts are, and it seems to depend on the timing of the particular posts and also who the person is that makes the post? The other side of the coin is that there are many (Thousands) people on this site and that only the real spammers, who do not have a life else ware, are the ones who seem to see most of the new posts! The average person who comes here after a real day?s work, may sometimes miss the "story" and because the description may be different you do not find what you are looking for before you post what you think is perhaps a unique story! You then get attacked on all sides by the rightness indignation of those that appear to have one goal in life, ?let?s find out who the idiots are, that post things that have been posted before?. Also please anyone show me what subject has not been covered on this forum! Eventually you would have to close EVERY thread because it has been posted in some form or another!

Duplicate threads are bad in that if 4 people posted the 63% of pop-up threads, which one would you hold a conversation in?

I am sorry that you don't see why multiple threads on the same topic are bad. I am sorry also that you don't like the "FTW" spammers (I don't either).

But complaining about it isn't going to change the situation, nor your (or my) perception of things.

Farstrider, it's for the sake of keeping the forums clean. As markjensen said, we can't have two discussions on the same things, it's pointless and it makes moderation a nightmare. As for the end of your post, I'm a bit confused. We don't close threads on absolutely everything that is slightly related to another thread. We merge threads when it makes sense - if a second conversation has developed, might as well, but if nothing is happening in the other one, what's the point? We'd just end up with a thread with several posts with the same news story and not much actual conversation.

If you're getting attacked "left right and center", then report it. We don't accept behaviour like that. On the other hand, you do have to accept that yes, we close duplicate threads, and yes, you may have missed the other thread. Nobody is punishing you. You had a hard day and missed the other thread, okay, you're not going to get banned for one little duplicate thread.

And then there's the spam issue. Right now it's confined to one thread, and it's a bit of a joke anyway.

As for the original poster, we have the Submit to Newsdesk for submitting to the Front Pages. Front Page News =! Breaking News, sometimes stories will get repeated on the Front Page and if you didn't Submit to Newsdesk then yes, you won't get credit because you didn't post it on the front page. If you'd like to take a look at Rule 7, you'll see that we get so many posts like those that we need a rule specifically to stop so many of them.

Yeah the 8m post has turned into a spamfest I agree with that but really the mods have come in multiple times cleared up the crap and let us continue to joke around its really as Purelegend said a thread to have a bit of fun with once the targets met and its October 1st its confined to the library of memories.

-snip-

People are more likely to read if you post in a formatted way, rather than a large block.

Also the 8 million thread is the only place with spam, it has not spread out into other sections that I know of, so just don't go there if you don't want to see the spam.

To you and the other person who bitched about the paragraph, or the lack thereof! I have to tell you that I find your comment(s) rather funny! Who are you, the paragraph police? The rest managed to read it and also to pass comment on the contents in the "block" so if you need me to send you a copy in a line for line format, I will gladly do so!

Don't see how any of that mess you posted has anything to do with the OP.

    • Microsoft finally admits its default Windows 11 25H2, 24H2 action broke key legacy component by Sayan Sen Microsoft last week released Windows 11 KB5094126 and KB5093998 as the latest Patch Tuesday updates. Following that the company also published the accompanying dynamic updates under KB5094149, KB5095971, and KB5094156. So far the company has acknowledged two known issues that have popped up after the release which include bugged-out Office apps as well as the Recycle Bin; though there could be more at play too. Speaking of bugs and issues, Microsoft seems to have finally acknowledged a problem that probably has been around for close to a year. That's because back in July of 2025 the company made a default change to the latest Windows 11 versions, wherein it switched to JScript9Legacy on Windows 11 24H2 and later releases. Hence following the release of version 25H2 in October 2025, JScript9Legacy also remained default-enabled. As a result there has been a compatibility issue ever since then. For those wondering, by switching to JScript9Legacy Microsoft intended to improve the security of modern Windows PCs by reducing vulnerabilities tied to legacy scripting like cross-site scripting (XSS), among others. XSS exploits can allow cyber-attackers to attach malicious code onto legitimate websites and use them to execute the code when a potential victim loads such a website. Hence the new JScript9Legacy engine enforced stricter execution policies and improved object handling, which should help mitigate such attacks. Microsoft today has published a new support article detailing the problem. Neowin spotted it while browsing. The company says that JScript global definitions and execution context may fail to persist across scripts, potentially breaking older dependent apps and web-based components that relied on this legacy behavior. In the article Microsoft has confirmed that the issue stems from its move away from the older jscript9.dll engine in favor of jscript9legacy.dll. As mentioned above, while the newer engine was designed to address vulnerabilities and strengthen security it also changes how JScript handles execution context. As a result functions and definitions loaded by one script could no longer remain available to subsequent scripts once execution ended. The company notes that some applications worked correctly on earlier Windows versions because the older JScript engine automatically retained global definitions and execution state between scripts. Under the newer model though that behavior is disabled by default causing certain legacy workloads and polyfill-dependent scripts to fail. Microsoft says it addressed the problem via the KB5077241 update though the fix had not been enabled automatically in the following updates. As such admins must explicitly turn on persistent JScript execution context using a Registry setting that the tech giant shared today. The configuration can be applied to individual processes or system-wide through the FEATURE_ENABLE_PERSISTENCE registry key. The steps have been outlined below: Run the following command to create the feature control registry key: reg add "HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl\FEATURE_ENABLE_PERSISTENCE" Under this key, create a new DWORD (32-bit) value. Configure the value as follows: To enable persistence for specific processes only: Set the value to 1 for each target process name. To enable persistence for all processes: Add * as the key name and set its value to 1. You can find the official support article here on Microsoft's website.

    • VidCoder 12.20 by Razvan Serea VidCoder is a DVD/Blu-ray ripping and video transcoding application for Windows. It uses HandBrake as its encoding engine. Calling directly into the HandBrake library gives it a more rich UI than the official HandBrake Windows GUI. VidCoder can rip DVDs but does not defeat the CSS encryption found in most commercial DVDs. You’ll need the NET 8 Desktop Runtime. If you don’t have it, VidCoder will prompt you to download and install it. The Portable version is self-contained and does not require any .NET Runtime to be installed. You do not need to install HandBrake for VidCoder to work. Feature list: Multi-threaded MP4, MKV containers Completely integrated encoding pipeline: everything is in one process and no huge intermediate temporary files H.264, H.265, MPEG-4, MPEG-2, VP8, Theora video Hardware-accelerated encoding with AMD VCE, Nvidia NVENC and Intel QuickSync AAC, MP3, Vorbis, AC3, FLAC audio encoding and AAC/AC3/MP3/DTS/DTS-HD passthrough Target bitrate, size or quality for video 2-pass encoding Decomb, detelecine, deinterlace, rotate, reflect, chroma smooth, colorspace filters Powerful batch encoding with simultaneous encodes Customizable Pickers to automatically pick audio and subtitle tracks, destination, titles and more Instant source previews Creates small encoded preview clips Pause, resume encoding VidCoder 12.20 changes: Updated HandBrake core to 1.11.2.
