Win7 features revealed: customizable UAC and integrated Accelerators

Recommended Posts

Not really. The notifications are off, but UAC is still working.

But, I still think UAC doesn't help in making computers safer for the general population of end-users. They're impatient and blindly click Yes/Continue/etc. to get rid of popups, that's why there's so much spywares adwares bs on their computers. They browse the net and they get a popup that asks you to download and install something, they accept. The program that they want to install asks them at some point to install some adware and you have the choice to accept or refuse, they decide to accept because they didn't read a damn thing, just clicking [Next].

You think it's any different with a UAC popup? UAC only helps those who are aware of what's going on, and at the same time that makes it sort of useless since those who are aware of what's going on do not need UAC. At least this update will make things easier for users who are more computer savvy.

Your observations are spot on, but only to the limits of the user experience portion of UAC.

The UI definitely needs work. If these pre-beta screenshots are anything to go by, at least they are trying to improve the user experience stuff. First we saw the possibility of a "sticky" UAC option where you can elect to silence UAC popups for a definite amount of time. Then we saw one dialog reading "Are you sure you want to install this program...", which may possibly lead to more concise UAC dialogs in Windows 7. And now this, tweaking UAC built into the UI.

Beneath all this, UAC powers IE's Protected Mode, a OS-wide virtual folder redirection system for restricted folders, and a low-integrity sandbox for potentially unsafe apps - same as IE's Protected Mode. All these are very useful, yet less obvious to users who think UAC's all about privilege escalation.

UAC is one of the best features of vista.

+1.

It only requires better coding by the programs' developers and you will almost never notice it. They should know that people don't wish to give full access to their systems to programs they run (something that a program should not even try to do, something that was everyday thing on XP and people would whine about how they got malware without noticing anything).

I hope they make sure google and yahoo can hook there accelerators in without a costly time wasting court battle.

Well, it is their choice. The courts are having too much power these days, something that is very wrong. It is their OS, they'll do whatever they want with it. And personally, I prefer Microsoft applications/engines/software for their OS. Adding Google from the start would be like advertising, something that I am not willing to pay for.

To those asking about accelerators: The most fundamental form is adding context menus related to specific tasks. For example, highlight some text, and a small icon will appear near it (or if not, right click the text). Along with the standard context menu, you will be given extra options pertaining to the action you are doing. For example, highlight some text, and you'll have options such as googling it, find the definition, look it up on mapquest, or whatever else you decide to add/remove.

It's essentially made to simplify your tasks: Instead of alt+tabbing between tabs and windows, you now just need to right click, and select.

interesting, looks like that could save space, I like.

could save space and gives the menus a nice design...i look forward to hopefully testing this version and seeing the progress and all the features that come along...

Oh please no. That looks atrocious.

It could work for just the keyboard and the small utilities, such as Magnifier, Sticky Notes, etc. But nothing beyond that (hopefully).

Thats the same in vista. If you have the Tablet PC tools installed. Its only like that in the on-screen keyboard though.

lmao... damn you found me out.... It's actually pretty nice to use when your to lazy to change the batteries in a wireless keyboard... lol

so....NTFS for another 10 years?

or is there a chance they've been working on a new File system that hasnt been announced yet?

Would be pretty cool if Microsoft would swallow their pride and license an existing filesystem such as ZFS..

NTFS is one of the better FS out there. Im a big apple fan, however NTFS is far more reliable than HFS+. The NTFS Version with Vista and Win2008 is incredibly advanced, with on the spot disk fixing (i.e. no longer require reboot to run a full chkdsk /f) I would say if anyone needed to adopt ZFS it would have to be apple.

In my experience i would say that NTFS more reliable the ext3 and UFS, beaten only by ZFS. It's pretty lightweight, it's quick and handles very large volumes without a problem.

As for fragmentation i will admit in NT4 and Win2k this was more of an issue, however they really have done a good job of upgrading NTFS for WinXP, Win2k3 and Vista/08.

    • AFAIK you shouldn't be getting a consent popup at all from Canada, so I think it is to do with a VPN or private/secure DNS.
    • From what I see it's only for Insider - preview builds. Not for everybody. So...
    • Of course, all of that sounds great on paper... No it doesn't!
