This is about Dubai trying to top the one in the article you linked.

Scirwode: Never noticed that you were in Malaysia - somewhere I plan on visiting soon. Doing Thailand again in a few weeks :) I adore going to different places, meeting different people and seeing their cultures and customs. Was brought up doing just that, always being exposed to new traditions, foods, practises, languages - best education a child can have.

Just got back from work so couldn't reply earlier, I'm surprised you didn't noticed I'm Malaysian as it's been there ever since I've joined :p . As for going to different places and soaking up new cultures, I love doing that as sometimes it's amazing how something that could be taken for granted by locals can be interpreted by us differently. Ever since I've lived in Manchester at one point, I've visited London, Paris, Turkey, which is a beautiful place with breathtaking architecture and Mecca and Medina where I did my Umrah. I've also gone over the border to Singapore though never to Thailand. Maybe one day I'll scrounge up some money just to see the sites in Pattaya  !

Yes, I have. Long before this current wave of spending and skyscraper one-up-manship. And then again within the last 3 years. It's a fantastic country and AMAZING if you like golf.

Have you?

I didn't really visit it, just a few hours going around the city during 2002 if I'm not mistaken. Back then there wasn't much :p .

No, and I don't ever plan to. I prefer The Caribbean.

I have nothing against you but for goodness sake learn something about the country before you go shooting you mouth of about what's bad when you haven't even step foot on it. And the Caribbeans are actually quite dangerous in a way, but which country isn't?

Scirwode

That is one huge tower. How can they possibly have anyone left to occupy these buildings lol.. Don't they have enough sky scrapers :p

Obviously not  .

What businesses? Without oil in the Middle East?

Dubai has always been a business hub. Before the discovery of oil, until now. Oil actually contributes to less than 15% of the national wealth.

I thought Oman and so on were now the rich countries and Dubai was in huge debt?

Oman is moving slowly but they have a good economy. Never heard about the huge debt, Dubai is currently investing heavily inside and out.

No, and I don't ever plan to. I prefer The Caribbean.

Don't try the Caribbean my ignorant friend. Its full of Pirates!! Haven't you seen the movie? They have zombies too!

**** Dubai! After what happened to that French kid in this sickening place, I hope a meteor comes from space and annihilates only Dubai!! Heh, like having really tall buildings makes them special! Japan's proposed space elevator will be even more awesome than anything this religion-dominated nation can ever dish out!!

Yes there are crimes in Dubai! There are many other negative aspects. The empty half of the cup in Dubai is more than enough for people like you to focus on.. But there are some normal people who would concentrate on the full half!

Dubai has entirely too much money...I suppose its all from asininely-priced oil. ^_^ We could always help them spend that money properly by charging $100 for a bushel of wheat. Sounds fair to me! :D

So why isn't the US produced oil priced a lot lower to compensate and provide generally cheaper gas then ?

oh that's right, because oil prices are adjusted by all oil producer in order to compensate for usage. and if oil was cheaper (as proved everytime prices are reuced) peopel will drive a lot more and use a lot more gas.

and as have been said, oil isn't the major contirbutor to their national economy anymore.

oh and besides doesn't the US actually mostly import food a well, not export so much, I dunno, but I do know none of the food sold here i "made in america"

it has money cos they dont spend on health and education like developed nations, and they dont tax ppl !!!

dont want to go there, cos im afraid i'll get beheaded for asking directions or something :(

1- They Don't Spend on Health.

2- They Don't Spend on Education.

3- people get beheaded there.

Where the hell do you get those points from!

I just checed some jobs down there today for fun(it'd be fun, but I don't think I'm that adventurous I'd ever go there for work...) anyway the jobs I saw listed excellent health care, Free housing, and education.

They may not have national health care like here in Norway, but I'd bet the free healthcare they do have, is at least equal to what they have in nations like the US.

Actually the health system in the UAE is quite good. There are governmental hospitals that offer the services free of charge to citizens, and for a very low fair to foreigners. And there are good private hospitals that offer their services under medical coverage plans, so you end up paying minimum.

And for diseases that are beyond the abilities of the local hospitals, the government sends the patients abroad to get treated.

You can see UAE nationals in the summer all around cities like Munich, London, New York, Stockholm, Bangkok, Halifax, Singapore, Hong Kong, etc. All are there for medical check ups and treatments covered by the government.

The Burj Dubai will be the world's tallest tower and the centerpiece of the Gulf regions most prestigious urban development to date

Burj Dubai (Arabic: برج دبي‎ "Dubai Tower") is a skyscraper under construction in the Business Bay district of Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and is the tallest man-made structure ever built, despite being incomplete. Construction began on September 21, 2004 and is expected to be completed and ready for occupation in September 2009.[1]

The building is part of the 2 km2 (0.8 sq mi) development called "Downtown Dubai", at the "First Interchange" (aka "Defence Roundabout") along Sheikh Zayed Road at Doha Street. The tower's architect is Adrian Smith[4] who worked with Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM) until 2006.[5] The architecture and engineering firm SOM is in charge of the project.[4] The primary builders are Samsung Engineering & Construction and Besix along with Arabtec.[6] Turner Construction Company was chosen as the construction manager.[7]

The total budget for the Burj Dubai project is about US$4.1 billion[8] and for the entire new 'Downtown Dubai', US$20 billion. Mohamed Ali Alabbar, the CEO of Emaar Properties, speaking at the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat 8th World Congress, said that the price of office space at Burj Dubai had reached $4,000 per sq ft (over $43,000 per sq m) and that the Armani Residences, also in Burj Dubai, were selling for $3,500 per sq ft (over $37,500 per sq m).[9]

Trust me, you have a better chance of being beheaded in the back alleys of London than in one of the Gulf countries.

This doesnt look like the one that was supposed to be the one tower to rule them all, that was built partly on one of those artificial islands ... I mean the picture looks different (the one on the first post).

Damn are those towers hard to keep track of! They always come up with something taller!

I think it's awesome anyway. This thread cracks me up :D

    • The only reason I want to know where you from is because if you are not from the U.K, then why should you care what we in the U.K do or don't do? Racist I am not, I am fed up with the amount coming over here and feel they can come over here and think we need to support them. Do you know how much it costs this country to support these people coming over here? Even when we give them a place to live it is not good enough. We had a barge that was being used to house immigrants, oh but that was not good enough. A mate said to me at the time, when he was homeless, he would have been happy to live on the barge, instead of ending up sleeping on a bench on the beach. I am not scared to say what my family heritage is, unlike you who is scared to say where they are from or where they live. Father side U.S, mother side Wales, still have family living in the U.S. A mate who sadly died a few years ago, had a load of people from different races recording in his studio, I got on with all of them. Skin colour don't bother me, where they are from don't bother me. Religion don't bother me as long as they don't push it onto me and it is not crazy stuff. I am not religious. But if you are not living in the U.K, then why should you care if we are in the E.U or not? This the problem, too many people poking their noses into where it don't belong. But you believe what you believe, if you think I am racist, then be it, I really do not care. Just grow a pair
    • If he hasn't been able to figure that out, then why is he obsessed with tariffs? Because that's one of the most prominent tools to level the playing field when you have high cost of labor.
    • Microsoft released Windows 11 KB5102558, KB5095615 Setup and Recovery updates by Sayan Sen This past week Microsoft released the newest preview update (C-release) under KB5095093. Alongside those, Microsoft also released new dynamic updates. For those who may not know, dynamic updates bring improvements to the Windows Recovery process in the form of Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) updates, which are also called Safe OS updates. The dynamic updates also affect the Setup file binaries in the form of Setup updates. These Dynamic Update packages are meant to be applied to existing Windows images prior to their deployment. Dynamic Updates also help preserve Language Pack (LP) and Features on Demand (FODs) content during the upgrade process. VBScript, for example, is currently an FOD on Windows 11 24H2. This time both recovery and setup updates were released for Windows 11. The company writes: "KB5095186: Safe OS Dynamic Update for Windows 11, version 26H1: June 23, 2026 This update makes improvements to the Windows recovery environment (WinRE). After installing this update, the WinRE version installed on the device should be 10.0.28000.2335. KB5102558: Setup Dynamic Update for Windows 11, versions 24H2 and 25H2: June 23, 2026 This update makes improvements to Windows setup binaries or any files that setup uses for feature updates in Windows 11, version 24H2 and Windows 11, version 25H2. KB5095615: Safe OS Dynamic Update for Windows 11, versions 24H2 and 25H2: June 23, 2026 This update makes improvements to the Windows recovery environment (WinRE). After installing this update, the WinRE version installed on the device should be 10.0.26100.8737." Microsoft notes that both the Recovery and Setup updates will be downloaded and installed automatically via the Windows Update channel.
