Not sure what the problem you had was. But nVidia has supported the 8800's a long time. Dec 2006 And the basic 2D support is handled not by nVidia, but by the Open Source "nv" driver, which should work fine for normal non-accelerated display through the install. ViperAFK
I have a newer card (9600GT) and I don't have to use a text base install... I can boot the 8.04 live cd fine and install.... When was the last time you tried ubuntu? it should work fine.

Is the problem with ATI video cards fixed in 8.10 using the accelerated drivers? I have a HD2600 Pro AGP8X 512meg.
