Personally I love using Windows but if you mess around warez section too much you're just asking to get malware lol

I had Vista on my laptop but I'm testing out Intrepid Ibex (Ubuntu 8.10 Beta) To be honest I'm finding open source just right for my needs

I use monodevelop for my CPP applications

Rythembox is simply da bomb!

Open Office works for my basic needs of word processing and opening up ppt files for school related materials.

I don't have to worry about installing any AV or AMW (Anti Malware) apps.

Only con really is just getting a decent photoshop like application which gimp is trying to become seeing the latest betas but I just don't want to run photoshop through wine. It makes me feel like apps are somewhat broken when emulating though wine.

It is like that if ur primary OS is linux then you need Windows OS as seconday OS ........for running / doing special task ........

and if u r using only Windows OS I think u can run almost all application but u have fear of security

(Not sure, It my point of view .... may be i m wrong)

as all here say that we use window OS play games .......and as mark also said "uses windows to run autocad"

It is kind of like that, if you have some of these "special tasks/apps" that only run in Windows. Wine is pretty capable, but not 100%.

EDIT: I see that you added to your post, and, yes, AutoCAD is a good example of a special app that requires Windows.

I really want to know we also faces such problem in Mac OS as i never experienced about it .......

I m using window OS (always) .... try linux but never adopt it as my main OS ......

I installed linux (fedora 4,5) many times but able to work for next 3-4 days

may be i just know few things about it

how to run internet , configure samba server and apache server (what i read during my course)

but i really want to explore linux as much as i explored window OS

Among Linux and Windows, Which operating system is better and why?

Post your answer with relavant reasons and logics

both are fine to use. linux is good and secure right out of the box unlike windows. but linux has alot of things it does not support yet like gaming, laptop support, syncing pda's & phones, etc....

i will go back to linux ubuntu after the 1st of the year when the new 8.10 version is released and the bugs are worked out. i will probably always have to dual boot with xp or vista for gaming and syncing support.

Uh oh... Another one of these polls...

For me, Windows because it lets me do what I need to do!

Though I've played with and have interest in Linux and have done so since around 1998.

well the bottom line is windows & apple dominate the market. linux is not mainstream yet and does need to support more things before it becomes so.

im not bashing linux as i use it often but i can foresee the day it becomes fully mainstream it will no longer be a "free" product either.

For me, Windows. I seem to waste far too much time just generally dicking around with Linux to be productive. Anymore, Linux is more of a novelty, just to tinker with. I've gotten past the point where what OS I use is some sort of ideological crusade, and just want to do stuff with my computer. The OS is just the means to the end, not the end itself. And Vista generally leaves me alone and takes care of itself to the point where I don't have to worry about most crap and can just do what I need to do.

But I think your Windows thinking is a bit dated. Have you met Vista at all? I am not a Microsoft supporter, but I must commend them on making the necessary changes to align themselves with a more secure computing model (UAC, limited user accounts both come to mind). This release from them has what XP should have included, and it is a welcome improvement, in my opinion.

Explain how, when anyone has access to the code, and a fork of anything can be done should someone try to violate the GPL and close their code.

Seems to me that the folks at Microsoft have taken some lessons from the Linux or Unix crowd in making sure that all changes or initiation of changes are first approved by the user (no "blanket" installations). Anyone who has used any *nix variation has had to log in as a super user or super user do ("sudo") in order to initiate system or program changes.

what i meant is the day it is in the stores on shelves.

windows is secure to a certain point "out of the box" but is much better when adding a better antivirus / firewall solution. i actually wish linux had a few different options for firewalls.

Linux has been on the store shelves, and I have purchased a Red Hat box (came with CD and manuals) when I first dabbled in Linux. That provides a convenient service to some users (as well as printed manuals which are nice), but it is not necessary to purchase, as one can download or just freely copy and share copies of CDs of Linux.

iptables allows you to do whatever you like.

There are several front-end GUI options to set the rules as you like. But really, what other option to iptables would be needed? Or are you thinking of wanting more front-ends to put different faces on the same function?

Well, for almost guarenteed compatability for hardwaresoftware, Windows is the way to go. If you want to specialise in computer-technology, like security, then use Backtrack 3. If you want a nice 'n easy free Windows replacement for surfing/light games (flash games, multi-format). My bus driver uses Ubuntu just for ripping CD's without DRM.

And you can't compare Windows and Linux directly, off the top of my head I can name these (current) distros- Fedora 9, Linpus (Based on Fedora 8), Backtrack 3, Ubuntu 8.04 (I think), kubuntu, gobuntu, Slax, DamnSmallLinux, SuSE, aaannd Shift. (Fedora Core 1 kept popping up in my head, I have a magazine disc of it in the drawer next to me, but I said 'current' heh.)

Within those though, you can get even more options, like DWMs, fancy stuff like Compiz, etc. It's a bit of a con, imo, as people who want to get started with Linux cannot say "I'm getting Linux, anyone got any advice for me?", as they inevitably get asked "What distro? Oh, I don't know <x> so you'll have to ask someone else."

It's worse than all the versions of Vista :p Ultimate, Premium, Basic, etc... people were getting confused with that even!

You should have just made a poll :p

I'd say... Windows, Linux has a lot of things I like better, like closing X instead of having to completely turn off your computers good :/ the Task Manager is better in Linux too. Oh and Compiz Fusion is f***ing COOOOLLLL lol.

But ether games don't work, or they are s*** :/

And WLM substitutes just aren't the same :(
