I thought glossy screens made movies look awesome. Why do they make nearly all HDTV's with glossy screens if that wasn't the case.

Because most people keep HDTVs in their homes, not outside. Glossy screens look terrible outdoors.

Eh? HDTV's are now nearly all glossy screens. It's hard to find one thats matte.

damn!

I just picked a high end MBP like 3 months back and here they have new laptops :(

but to be honest, i think people might call me dumb or stupid but i prefer my current MBP to the newer one to be honest besides the configuration which is high on the newer MBp.

True but I'm also referring to the new Cinema Display which is glossy and some people said it will be crap for movies. Your not gonna take that outdoors are you? :p

Glossy screens make colours look more vivid and lively though. I like it that way, personally.

Yes, but:

- the glass reflects light badly enough indoors on iMacs. Outside on Macbooks will be impossible unless you're a nightstalker.

- the glass screens don't show true colours, meaning the new MBP, which is aimed at professionals, is all but useless for anyone who uses Photoshop, Final Cut, etc, professionally.

Depends on where you live, I guess. But glossy screens just don't look good outdoors. But hey, they are cool and pretty, so of course Apple will embrace them. This is the same company that just five years ago, was strictly matte screens and anti-gloss. Really shows you want market share does to your products.

Exactly.

Yeah, for showing fake colours, you're right.

But I don't know... the whole market is slowly moving towards glossy screens. If it becomes a standard, it's OK for pro stuff IMO.

And off-topic : my Panasonic plasma TV from last year is kinda glossy. But it's plasma though, so maybe they all are.

Yep. The glossy screen reflects light too much, most HDTV's don't have a highly reflective surface, glossy or not they don't reflect the same way as these will. I watch movies on my iMac all the time, but I have a lamp next to my couch. I always have to turn it off during movies because it blocks half my screen with its reflection. Turning it off doesn't help me do anything because I can't see anything in the room. I was hoping they would make their Cinemas matte, after all they were meant to be the best of the best in the monitor realm. I think this is a big slap in the face. Forcing it on the iMac's and laptops is one thing, but these screens were meant to be used for film and professional designers. While I agree they look very nice glossy, its usability is shot big time.

I'm someone disappointed at the notebook event. Apple dropped the price on the old notebook to an amazing $999, and the new Macbook retails for $1299. That is still too expensive, yes I understand that the new Macbook has alot going for it, its easily the best looking laptop on the market, but hell, so much for a price drop. I paid about $1100 for my Macbook including AppleCare, and taxes etc.

I don't think its a very good price point to be selling the old Macbook for $999. If Apple had begun to sell it for a price like $699 or $799 it would sell like hot cakes.

As for the glossy screen argument, I do agree to some extent. I have a window behind me, and most of the time my Macbook screen reflects the window to the point where I have to position my body in a way so that the screen won't reflect the window. The trade-off is you can a much sharper display thats shows colours in a much more pleasing way.

I'm still unsure of why Apple did this on the Macbook Pro models though... last I heard the colour reproduction on glossy screens was not that good, and for designers, isn't that everything? Perhaps your old Macbook Pros could go up in value? :p

Overrall, it was a good event, but not great or revolutionary as I would've hoped for Apple.

I think it comes down to cost effectiveness and conformity. Apple likes their models looking similar. So, if both the MacBook and MacBook Pro can be made in exactly the same way and therefore look exactly the same way, why the hell not? More than ever, the MacBook Pro is simply a MacBook with a larger display and a better GPU.

Also, is the 17'' MacBook Pro going to be eventually discontinued, since it didn't receive the chassis update? My guess is just like the 160 GB iPod classic, most people simply preferred the 15'' model to the 17''.

Steve said that the 17" Macbook Pro was refreshed along with the rest of the notebooks.

Well, it's not on Apple's site then. Because the 17'' model continues to use the (now outdated) older chassis design.

Hmm.. yeah I just noticed that. In that case, you might be right :p

One thing I'm wondering, so all the Macbook models have backlit keyboard right? Even the $1299 model, during the video it seemed like only the $1599 model would have it, but when I configure it on the Apple website it says even the $1299 model has backlit keys.

Thats really the one thing I really want over my Macbook.

Yeah, it's confusing. The promo video says that only the 2.4 GHz MacBook has it, and yet the $1,299 also supports it. Probably just an error on the video. They were probably just trying to clarify that only the "new" models have it, not the older polycarbonate ones.

I paid $1349 ($CAN) for my white Macbook 2.4Ghz, 2Gb DDR2, 160Gb HDD and Intel chipset.

Now Apple is asking $1749 for the same CPU speed, same amount of newer DDR3 memory, 250Gb HDD and nVidia 9400M video, LED LCD..... And a nice slick casing.

That's $400 MORE.... But is it really worth that much more? Do people really play games on their small Macbook?

I'll be keeping my Macbook until the next refresh.... When Apple get their pricing straight.

The 1299 model doesn't have backlit keyboard. :(

I'm ordering the 1599 model.

We haven't seen the educational pricing yet. It might be a bit less.

I was not talking about educational pricing (and it's been years since I'm out of schools!). I'm talking pure pricing in $CAN here.

With every major players coming out with lower price laptop, it's funny to see Apple coming out with a new laptop that cost more than the one it replace.... Even if the design is fabulous, it does come at a price hike.

+backlit keyboard

+led display

+much better gpu

+faster ddr3 ram

+larger hard drive

+stronger durable chassis which is also lighter and thinner

+longer battery life

+multi touch trackpad

You honestly didn't expect all that at the same price did you?

A better GPU is not just tailored to gaming--Snow Leopard, Photoshop CS4, Aperture all take advantage of a more powerful GPU.

Granted, it seems like other countries are paying a higher price compared to the US. The second tier Macbook only costs $100 more now in the US. (while you're saying it's a $400 difference for Canada)

    • Sound Booster 1.13 Build 575 by Razvan Serea Increase volume on your laptop. Boost the volume of even very quiet speakers. Raise volume above maximum. Letasoft Sound Booster can be used as an extra amplifier when the volume of the program you are listening to is too low for comfortable listening and you feel that your PC’s speakers can produce a louder sound. This can be the case when the audio or video has been recorded at the level below normal. Or, for example, when the other person’s microphone you are talking to on Skype, is not working properly. There can be a plenty of other reasons why the sound is being too quiet and there is not much you can do about it except buy external speakers. Sound of any application that is being played in the system can be amplified up to 500%. Letasoft Sound Booster can raise volume of programs like web browsers, on-line communication software (Teams, Discord, Zoom), any kind of media player or games. Simply put, volume of virtually any program that can play any sound in PC, can be boosted to a comfortable level with Letasoft Sound Booster. You can control current volume with the pop-up slider from the system tray. Alternatively, you can assign system-wide hot keys for increasing and decreasing, and use them when you need to adjust volume Letasoft Sound Booster constantly monitors current gain level and prevents samples from clipping, thus reducing all major sound distortions. • I own these and the normal QuietComfort ones from Bose. The QC are amazing and I want to love these, but for the life of me, I have a terrible time getting them attached to my ears.
    • Thanks for the tip. I am giving it a try. Initial quick impression: I like it.
